Does anyone have any experience with this brush? It's a silvertip made by Rooney for the Gentleman's Shop. Looks similar to a Rooney Style 2 small, but even smaller. Same knot size (22mm), but only 105mm in overall length. The price is good at about $50 plus carriage. Any and all opinions welcome. Thanks!

Correction...20mm knot as opposed to the 22 of the "official" Rooney.

Its most certainly living up to my expectations. As you said, it (the BK4) really is a lather-machine with soaps....and the feel is the epitome of luxury.

As I believe I may have mentioned before, they've been doing this since 1777 - I think they've figured it out!! Got your 8 yet? :D

How would you compare the BK4 to the B&B Finest?

How would you compare the BK4 to the B&B Finest?

Totally different. Although the knot sizes are only different by 1mm (BK4=22mm, Finest=23mm), the Finest "acts" like a brush with a 28mm knot (at least compared with other dense brushes like an SR). The BK4 is really a MUCH smaller brush, comparatively speaking, so the lather is more of a controlled substance and it eats up less of your face. The BK4 is also not as dense, but I'd say also has a shorter loft. They both however, are spectacular brushes.

ps - I am no longer (at least for now) using the word "floppy" when describing brushes.....if I were, that word would have appeared above several times.

Thanks Joe,

It sounds like a BK4 would work nicely for me :D

Other than Charles, I don't even know who sells SRs. And his site is so bad, I can never even find a pic of any of the ones people have recommended...the 3824 included. (Great service, but his web site su..., umm, stinks.) That said, from the pics I HAVE seen, I just don't care for them.

I ordered the Gentleman's Shop Rooney. And since I was there, I also ordered the T&H 1805 ASB which comes with a free tube of 1805 shaving cream. Hey, no add'l shipping charge so what was I supposed to do?! ;)

If anyone's interested, the T&H thing includes Trafalgar, 1805, Limes and Grafton. Buy the balm and get free cream. Buy cologne and get free shower gel.

My Gentleman's Shop Rooney arrived today (ordered 3/28). Actually, yesterday, but all I got then was the USPS notice to pick it up. What an awesome brush! I wish I had a better variety of brushes so I could compare this one to others, but my two Kents (BK4 & 8) and the B&B are so similar, I'm really comparing the Rooney with one (pick one) other brush. I'd have to say the BK8 is the densest feeling of the three, but nowhere near as dense as the Rooney.

This is a totally different brush. First of all, it's the only brush I've owned that offered me the opportunity to see first hand what everyone complains about when they mention dead badgers. Whoa, this brush really smells! Even after lathering with two soaps and three creams (with ZERO hair loss, by the way!), it still smells! Much less now, but it has a ways to go yet. Maybe I should soak it overnight in Bay Rum!

If Kents are supposed to be "floppy" (and I much prefer the term "luxurious"), this brush is anything but! Rather dense, in fact. Not scratchy at all either. In fact, extremely soft. I'd even have to say that the bristles, while much firmer feeling than the Kents or the B&B, feel even softer on my face. Not at all prickly - velvety smooth in fact. Really...a very different brush.

Lather? Oh, yeah! Soaps and creams alike. Very nice!! Have to learn how much water to shake out all over again though. First time I tried lathering with a cream, I had to dump it out and start again - it held much more water than I've gotten used to. (Fortunately, I umm, have several creams :D)

Almost forgot...specs are:

Knot, 21mm
Overall Height, 105mm
Loft, 49mm
Handle, 56mm
Bloom, 75mm (+/-)

Bottom line, I really like this brush! Especially for $50!! Wanna see? Thought so. Before and after with it's friends, BK4 and B&B Finest.....

Thanks.....for the review, and for adding ANOTHER brush to the acquisition list. No really, sounds like you've got a winner there and an absolute "steal" @ $50 :happy088

The brush is a Rooney Style 2. An excellent brush. Saville Rows...regardless of what you read, they are Shavemac brushes. As far as Kent brushes, I gave mine away. I prefer the SR, Shavemac and Rooney brushes.
