As some of you have already pointed out, TSD has been a bit slow over the last few days. Our server has been under a DDoS attack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack). Our servers certainly were groaning under the initial load, but with some adaptation, and some increased security, things are greatly better. The attack still continues, but at this point, i've managed to remove all the teeth from the bite.

Unfortunately, our increased security has caused some problems as well, including the slow downs the last 30ish hours. This will not be a long term problem, and it will get better as I continue to focus our protection more effectively.

Sorry we didn't tell you sooner, but it was my opinion that sharing that information before we had a handle on it, might have made our problem worse.

Although I admit this might be a little bit of a "reach", this DDoS attack is confirmation that TSD is getting a lot of good exposure on the Web. The Wikipedia article about Denial-of-Service Attacks states, "Perpetrators of DoS attacks typically target sites or services hosted on high-profile web servers ..."

The internet is full of little people insisting to show how long theirs really is. One can only pity them for thinking what they try to a achieve matters at all. If only they used their sparetime wiser I'm certain they would live happier.

Is this still fallout from the major schpate of SE Asian DDOSing of US servers that started the week before last?

I don't believe so. I'm fairly certain this is related to a member who had to be shown the door.

And DDoS attacks are for children. Real men hack.

*snerk*

Unless you built up the botnet yourself by hacking. Then a DDoS might be a bit more mature. I'd rather have zombies DDoSing than relaying spam any day!

Well spoken! TSD has way too many good things going on to be adversely impacted by the malicious efforts of one jerk! :D

Another shaving forum is being bombed with some strange spam attack.

Why can't hackers and spamers just let us live in peace?

It's all part of being on the net. Even some of the mega huge websites have been brought offline from DDoS attacks (ebay comes to mind). Straight hacking has certainly claimed it's victims too. Fortunately in our case, the security we had, did prevent us from going totally offline.

Any site that tells you they have completely foolproof security is lying. All you can do is prepare yourself, and your website in the event it occurs. If it does, you just try and adapt as fast as possible to end it.

DDoS attacks are quite hard to prepare for, because in the end, all the attacker is doing, is flooding the site with traffic. There's no "security breach", or anything on those lines. Straight hacking has claimed some websites too, but USUALLY, that can be prevented by using good passwords, and up to date software.

Just know that our forum isn't going anywhere.

Working fine for me. It was slow for a couple posts earlier in the afternoon but nothing major. And I think were under attack because they all know were secretly taking over the world with our crazy shaving antics.

OK guys and girls.....JoAnna asked me if I was running Firefox...which I downloaded of course. But it was still running IE. As soon as I launched Firefox....No problems at all! Yeah I am computer illiterate. At least my posts dont take 2 minutes to load.
