View Full Version : Going to start using shaving cream

After this coming week, I think I'll start alternating a week of soap with a week of cream. I have 6 Geo. F Trumper shaving creams, for example, which will take me exactly through a week: one cream a day. (I don't shave on Sunday mornings.)
It's hard to leave the soaps, though... :)

I usually mix my glycerin soaps with my creams. I load the brush with the soap until I have a lather going then I moved to the bowl and start mixing with my cream of choice for that day. Superlather and very slick. I have noticed that this mix helps my straights glide a little better. YMMV.

I thought of myself as predominantly a soap person for a long time, but lately I have been using C&E Sienna, KMF, and T&H (Ultimate Comfort, which is maybe not as good as some of the others, but it's the only T&H I have currently.)
I really want to try some of the Trumper's creams, or maybe Taylor's. I feel a bit of SCAD (can we use that one still?) coming on. (Or how about GGSC--as in, "gotta get shave cream"? :D )

I thought by now I would have developed a preference for soaps or creams. Not so far... I rotate almost every day. Whatever looks good that morning is what I end up using.

I think I'll also alternate, but by week instead of by day. This week I'll be using Geo. F. Trumper shaving creams:
Almond
Coconut Oil
GFT
Rose
Sandalwood
Violet
FWIW, that's my complete Geo. F. Trumper collection. Seqence will be more or less random: Coconut Oil Monday morning because I happened to take off the lid and the fragrance wafted me away.

I tend to favor creams myself. However, I am currently in the process of trying to downsize my stock and settle in on 6 to 10 creams that I really like and that produce zero irritation. I seem to have several ingredient sensitivities so that is the real issue with my downsizing.
I like the convenience of creams and the extra cushioning that most of them provide. I like 'clean' scents and lavenders. Taylor's Old Rose formula was in my top 3 before it went away. I'm now looking for another rose cream; don't care for Trumper's. I do like Trumper's Violet.

I rotate between soaps or creams. Sometimes, I will charge a brush with Mama Bear No Scent soap and use a cream. It's fun to experiment.

I have the T&H Rose... the only rose cream I own and I like it a whole lot. You might give it a try.

Where to find it is the next question. I understand it is not available here in the US. I would really like to try it since rose creams seem to be going the way of the dinosaur.
I always heard Coates had a great rose cream, but that is history as well.
One other cream someone might be able to comment on is the Salter's Rose.

Perfumed toilet paper next to a pile of tires burning. Great lather nonetheless.

I either got mine from Charles at QED or from Classic Shaving. I don't remember now...

Im not touching Salter.. I had a few samples and the Salter Citrus was like having English burned Bacon on my face scent wise.
Its a Brand I can do without.

Michael, which soaps are you most fond of these days?

So, Michael, how goes it with the shave creams? Deal or No Deal?
Haven't heard back in a few days and was just wondering if you've been able to break from the soap fetish for a few days to give some premium creams a whirl.
Which one[s] have you tried so far?

The best rose soap is St. Charles Soap Savory Rose. Good easy lathering, slick, cushioning, and the rose scent is just like a rose your Mom would have growing in the garden. Beautiful.................

Once upon a time I was a mostly cream guy, but in the last couple of years, I've started leaning a lot towards soaps.

I just bought some Taylor's Rose not too long ago from classicshaving.com. Is this a new formulation or scent?

I used to love Taylors almond. What a super cream that is.

That would be the new formulation.
