View Full Version : Razors I Don't Really Care About

If you haven't figured it out from my previous posts yet, I have a pretty severe case of RAD. Nonetheless, there are some razors out there that would have to be virtually given away to draw my interest. This list is limited to vintage Gillettes, which is where the bulk of my paychecks go. :D
Late 50's Executive. This is just a gold-plated Fat Boy that has none of the charm and uniqueness of the earlier versions. And the case blows too.
1960's Aristocrats. Gold-plated Slim Adjustable at a premium price. The case is kind of cool, but who cares?
Toggle. Surprised? One of the rarest vintage Gillettes, but, nonetheless, just a gold-plated Fat Boy with a strange handle.
Diplomat. Beautful razor and case, but just a gold version of the much cooler Rhodium-plated President.
Techs. (not one-piece) Okay, I do own a couple of these which I obtained at nearly give-away prices. What did I say earlier?
Rockets. A heavier version of the 40's Super Speed, but at an asinine price.
Late 70's Super Adjustable. The one with plastic bottoms. Yechh!
195 Adjustable. Okay, technically, they are all 195s, but among wet shavers, that distinction is reserved for the model with the adjustment dial on the bottom of the handle. As far as I am concerned, it could be at the bottom of a lake.
Blue Tip SS. Not only do I dislike really mild razors, but those aluminum handles usually end up looking like crap.
Black Tip SS. Huh?
1954 TV Special. 40's style SS with a different case. Whoopee.
Gold and Black Super Adjustable. Garish.
I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of them right now. Please note that this list is limited to vintage Gillettes only -- don't get me started on Mach 3s or Fusions. ;)

Let me know when you have a #195 to give away... I'll relieve you of the effort of finding a lake... :D

Nice - You put some thought and passion into that post ! By eliminating some of those razors I am free to pick up some more fishing gear !!
wow, I totally disagree on almost all of those, but to each his own.

Hi there Rick,
Of course, we all have different ideas on what looks good and what doesn't. I won't speak to that, but just wanted to mention a few things about how a couple razors perform(or in some cases did for me). I don't know if you shaved with each of those models on your list, but there's some thoughts worth mentioning about a few.
So, starting with:
The 'Super Adjustable' w/plastic underneath: I've used those and there was very little difference between that and the one with all metal head. Maybe a few grams lighter, but a very nice shave for me.
The '195': No, I've never tried one of those, but I'd sure like to. My favorite razor's a fatboy, and the 195 is close to that model. The difference (to me) would be the balance, and also the grip on the handle. I hear great things about those types, but yeah, they're rare.
The 'Toggle': Hehe, Rick, this one isn't just a gold fatboy with a purty handle. Nope, if it was, I'd probably love mine (which I don't). The toggle I have shaves me differently than my go to razor (fatboy), and for at least a few reasons. You're right..the handle IS different, and it adds some length to the razor. So, not only is the handle a different style (different grip at the base required), but it also makes the razor about 1/2 inch longer than a fatboy.
Not only that, the toggle weighs a bunch more...........10 grams, to be exact. So, that extra weight is distributed where? I'm guessing it's mostly the head, and it has a very unusual 'tray' as part of the assembly. Believe me Rick, the shave is more aggressive for me, and I think the weight's the cause.
Anyway, just my take on things, and feel free to disagree,
Martin

Rockets. A heavier version of the 40's Super Speed...
Sounds like shaving perfection to me! The ease and smoothness of a classic superspeed with the heft and balance a little more well distributed weight gives to the razor.
No gold plate, no rhodium, no adjustment - just a near perfect shave. I didn't pay very much for mine, but all the same that's why rockets are so highly prized :)

Hi there,
I agree with you about the Rocket's extra weight possibly making for a better shave, although I've never tried one. I've used a regular superspeed in the past, and the head felt a bit light for my tastes. I think the Rocket might be a little more aggressive, which is a good thing in this case if true. I'd be willing to give those a shot if I ran across one.

Okay, let me clarify this post, lest I upset anyone. :D
What I said was, "There are some razors out there that would have to be virtually given away to draw my interest". I didn't say that I wouldn't want to own some of them, I'm just not that interested in them for the prices they currently command. And you guys must agree with me, since no one has snapped this razor (http://cgi.ebay.com/55-GILLETTE-DIPLOMAT-RAZOR-CASE-50-BLADES-PRISTINE_W0QQitemZ140253863053QQihZ004QQcategoryZ3 5989QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) up. ;)

Hmmm.. Already got a Diplomat.. and not at that price, thankfully...
I don't agree with some of your sentiments on the razors, but I do agree the prices are getting just ridiculous!
I would love that razor, but the price is way out of my range.
I will have to wait and get one that is (half) broken I suppose. ;)
