I have a Miele. It's okay I guess (when I get around to using it), but there must be better ones out there. How about one of these?............. :)

Get a Dyson. They cost a bit more, but man, are they ever worth it. Check Costco if you have them in your area, or go to Bed, Bath, and Beyond with one of their 20% off coupons. The nice thing about the Dyson (assuming we are talking about the upright) is that it is like two vacs in one. The long hose basically turns it into a canister vac in a snap. They also make some really nice attachments, like the soft duster and another one that cleans bed comforters. I have had mine for about 4-5 years with no problems of any kind.

I'd suggest going to a vacuum store in your area and look at the different brands and models, try them out and find one you like. By getting it from there you can get a better deal on maintenance and servicing. I have had the same vacuum for the last 15 years and take it in every year for servicing and it still works great.

I (well, the wife) bought one of those filter-less water thingy systems... Cost an arm and a leg but I must agree the result is beyond anything I've seen!

Hey PO, it looks like we are both "Drug Store Robbers". You grab the Depends, and I'll get the rectal thermometers! :D

Now this is one I have never heard of... unless you mean a standard Carpet Cleaner like a Bissel. I don't think that would work for a large space.. just spills.

Really I have to agree with Dyson. I have never heard anything bad about them and they are always high on the recommendation lists. Expensive though.. but quality always costs.

Now you made me run down and actually touch the thing... I was hoping to leave that to my better half... ;)

Wow..

Well, in my [humble] opinion it was overpriced, but I agree to the statement that indoor atmosphere has radically changed since this device entered the arena. And the floors are much cleaner, we have two dogs that not only shed hairs, but bring in gravel on their paws. Before and after this device is just undescribable...

Got one of those bagless canister vacs here (http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-S3765-040-WindTunnel-Electronic-Canister/dp/B00008UI0R/ref=pd_sbs_k_1) recently. The thing picks up stuff so much better than any upright we've owned lately, and it's not as much as a Dyson. Good reviews and a good report here (http://www.consumersearch.com/www/house_and_home/canister-vacuums/).

Well, being on my college budget, I can only suggest not buying an on sale dirt devel at target for 30$. I am rather impressed with the way it moves dirt. As you push the vacuum towards all the dirt, it blows it all forwards and away from it. Its pretty nifty, i drag it around backwards once or twice a semester :D

I also use a water based unit. Mine is a hyla nst. In a "former life", I sold them. Door to door sales are no fun for any of the parties involved. :ashamed001

It's not a new concept, rainbow has been making them since the 20's.

Miele. the best.

My $0.02 worth.

Wifemate and I went to a local shop (trying to buy local, etc). I encouraged her to try the local guy. Mistake.

He was selling and we bought a Panasonic upright. It's well made, etc. But...wifemate hates it!

Too heavy, doesn't suck as she thinks it should, adjusting the height is a pain. FWIW, I think it and the Miele come from the same factory.

Whatever the next one is for us, I'm out of the decision. I'll have no opinion. The selection will be totally that of the main user (not me)!

I have a Rainbow to sell if anyone is interested; we are now using a Riccar from the local vacuum store.

Welcome to The Shave Den, Spooky! The only downside I have yet to see for the one I posted the link for is that you have to empty the dust cup frequently (probably after every or maybe every other use.)

But it will definitely pick up cat hair! (I know...we have two cats that SHED.)

We bought a Dyson Animal Ball (http://www.bestvacuum.com/dyson-DC15-animal.html)a couple years ago, it has been flawless, the Hepa filter is great and easy to clean and service.....this thing is a monster and really does an amazing job.....

We usually vacuum weekly and the amount of dirt this picks up on a weekly basis is crazy, especially when the carpets don't even appear to be dirty. It's great at picking up pet hair too

I would buy another Dyson if this one ever breaks, impressive quality :happy005

Yet another moderate cynic who was completely won over to the Dyson camp. (Not like I don't do this anyway, but...) I have to give my wife credit for this buy--it's been worth it.

Avoid ORECK........................only thing good about them is their marketing.

Dyson works ok if your not in an old apartment with crappy carpet. Other than that I like it. I think the suction could be better though.

Meilie are nice, expensive as heck and require a lot of maintenance.

Put in Hard Wood floors, brooms are cheaper.

I love my Oreck. It's the best vacuum I've ever owned and I'd get another one if I ever needed to.

Yea I'm kinda partial to the Oreck as well. What I don't like about them is their small cannister vac they give you with the purchase is a POS. It SUCKS! er well, it doesn't suck for beans actually. My mom got sucked into the Rainbow thing about 25 years ago and really liked it.
