We had one of these when I was a kid back in Small Town Canada. It only was around maybe.. 2 years or so from when I remember but you really don't see these much anymore.

I loved their frilled cheese. A meal fit for a king.... or an 8 year old. I think it was a bit more expensive when I got to it.:)

$3.00 was a lot of money. And we made a lot less. I remember gas at .21 cents.

Great post, great topic, as it relates to my recent readings.

I'm reading a book called "Holding On: Dreamers, Visionaries, Eccentrics, and Other American Heroes." A chapter I read last week was an interview with Geneva Tisdale, the Sandwich Board Girl at the Woolworths in Greensboro, NC. This interview took place shortly after it was announced that Woolworths was closing, and that the lunch counters would close before the stores would.

She had worked there since 1951, and been on the counter since 1960. The Greensboro Woolworths was the site of a famous "Sit-In" in the 1960's, when some black men sat at the counter and asked to be served along-side the white folks, and were repeatedly denied. Soon, the African-American people took up the entire cafe, and they were forced to stop serving food at all. (Ironically, Geneva and much of the kitchen staff were black.) When they eventually decided to serve African-Americans along side the white customers, Geneva and two other black employees were the first to be served.

Just thought I'd share an abbreviated piece of an inspirational Woolworths story.

PS, I remember gas as low as $.85 since I've been driving. That's only 12 years.:(

Wow. That's a cool piece of history. There was a Woolworth near me during the 70's and I remember going there with my Mom a few times as a kid. It finally closed, but I do remember the dining area and general atmosphere as if I was just there last week.

Yea, we had a Woolworth's and a grill in the local Rexall Drug store. Both great places when I was a kid. The Rexall grill had great hamburgers.

I don't know about Canada. I was watching an Indy race and some of the walls had Rexall posters on them, though, so I think they're still around somewhere.

Yep, we have Rexall Drug Stores in Canada. They are not anything beyond drug stores though.. in other words no food or anything.

I remember walking there with my Grandma when we slept over, it was a special treat. The grill area, soda fountain and toys were all downstairs in the lower level. I am going to print this out and take it to her to she how much she can recall.

I have some friends in Evansville, IN and a woolworth type store and grill closed about 2 years ago. Never made it in there, guess the prices were not that good.

Rexall is definately around in Canada, at least in Alberta.

They sponsor everything in Edmonton. They were the title sponsor of the Indy Car series race last week. They own the naming rights to the Edmonton Oilers' Arena, Rexall Place.

I'm pretty sure their logo adorns dasher boards for every NHL team in Canada. They seem like Canada's answer to Walgreens.

Not sure if I would go that far (Shopper's Drug Mart seems to be larger) but yep. We have them pretty much everywhere. No Walgreens up here either.
