I am considering trying for the local police force. I am 32 so I need to get in to the shape of a 21 year old. I have a legal background and got in to this line of work because I wanted to help people. I feel that my position is unfulfilling. I want to go for the police force to have a more fulfilling job. What I am afraid of is not making it and not having a job to go back to.
I have a family to support and in this economy, I am just unsure. I know that I can pass all the tests, the PT will be challenging but I am in good shape, I just need to get in to better shape.
Thoughts?

Stay where you are (legal) and take a year (or however long you feel you need)to train physically, then apply to the police academy. Try to figure out what the physical requirements are and use that as a base for your exercise/training routine.

A buddy of mine joined the police for the county and he used a "Navy Seal Fitness book" he said it did well for him and he let me use it. It is pretty intensive, although since I am not in the Teams I do not know how accurate it is. Pretty standard stuff for hardcore pt which is what I am using it for.

What was the PT like? Pushups, situps, pullups, running etc.

I am not in the acadamy yet but yes you need to get in shape.
Can you do 25-50 push ups?
Can you do 30-50 sit ups (not crunches)
Can you run a total of 3 miles?
Can you do a mile an 1/2 in less then 13-14 min?
When you say yes, go for it.

Run a 1/2 mile in that time hell yeah.

Knowing he uses AV, they're probably going to have a serious look at the psych evaluation, too. ;)

30 pushups in one min
30 situps in one min

The local PD where I live. Not the major city of Portland. They require military or previous police experience. None of which I have. So the PT is probably no too bad.

Also remember you need to be ready to go all day without food. A friend of mine whos in great shape (played rec soccer, high school, and college soccer, 20yrs of it) failed because he has a fast matabalism and has to eat every 4 hours or so or he just runs out of energy. He ran out half way through the day long test. Learn to ration food and make the most out of it.

Haha. I'm not going to lie, but there are so many damn cops at every dunkin donut by me in new york. Its boarderline rediculous. They fill their own stereotypes. Only some of them get donuts though.
I remember when the tappanzee bridge was closed down for a night there was actually a line of cops inside buying boxes upon boxes of donuts. I mean....cummmmon. Atleast the firehouse has a wet bar.

1: Can you support your current lifestyle with the change in careers?
2: Can you live with the fact you will be in harms way every day you go to work?
3: Can your marriage and family survive a job that is historically BRUTAL on relationships?
4: Can you thrive in a thankless position ?
These are questions I would have.

1 - Yes and my wife could be the stay at home mom she wants to be instead of working graveyard.
2 - With the right therapist anything is possible.
3 - I leave my work at the door. My family and I never discuss what goes on at work. I interned with a Family law Lawyer. You wanna talk nightmares about what people to their kids. You just go home and hug everyone tighter that night.
4 - My thanks for my job comes from my family at the end of the day when my kids say my daddy helps people or I am asked to go to show and tell. Humanity, generally, is thankless and wasteful. That is a broad brush, I know , but I see it as true if only in pockets.

Everybody has there breaking point. The way you avoid it is by knowing where yours is. I know where mine is. It is located somewhere between 36 hours of sleep deprivation and seeing a child smashed through the windshield of a car because the parent was too stoned or drunk to buckle them in and/or a drunk driver decided to play chicken and lost.
I think after that call, I deserve a therapist and a beer.:cool::D

I was just saying don't rely on a shink to fix your problems but I do agree in seeing one if you need it.
Don't forget group therapy.

I almost blew coffee out my nose.
Sounds like you have a decent foundation for one of the 2 most THANKLESS jobs in the entire world..................
Police Officers and Teachers.
Waaaaaaay over worked, underpaid and under appreciated.
Good luck in whatever decision you make.
