HONOLULU — The Army on Friday was holding an exercise involving shooting live pigs and treating the gunshot wounds in training it says is critical to saving soldiers' lives but which has sparked outcry from animal-rights activists.

Even if it was for a "good cause", this one seems a bit rough.

"If frying a live monkey's brain will help us cure cancer one day, or save even one life... I have only one thing to say.... The left is positive, and the right is negative!"
-- random stand-up comic, sometime in the past on MTV
If it was just for the sake of killing animals, I don't think it's right. However, if this will help us learn how to better treat battle wounds to soldiers... well then... sorry little piggy. ::kar

they could always use the blood from the pigs to smear on the bullets and bombs that we use in the middle East. That would end the war in nothing flat lol. (Didn't McArthur use this same tactic in the Philippines?).

I worked security many moons ago in a lab where they did animal testing for new surgical techniques. The animals were bred on a farm specifically for that use.
Note that this is Hawai'i and there are Luaus.

It's just hard to decide exactly who the monkey is! I think I'd prefer some monkeys before some of the representatives of Homo Sapiens I have met...

There's a tree that needs a hug somewhere. If you want to get personal with insults, you should probably act like a Moderator and take it to PMs.
The development of insulin was the direct result of animal research. It was through research on dogs that scientists were able to identify the pancreas as being where insulin is made, and through careful investigation were able to isolate, and then later synthesize, insulin.
Since this discovery, millions of people with diabetes have been able to live much longer, happier lives.
Meningitis, as another example. Any of the above, and much more, can be easily found on Google searching for animal testing results.
I'll state my belief again. Torturing animals, simply for the sake of torturing animals, is sick and twisted... and should not be condoned or supported in the least. However, as a legitimate source of scientific testing, I fully support it.

I do not believe that anything was directed towards you specifically Baloosh. I saw nothing that would suggest he was calling you a monkey or that you are worse than a monkey or anything.

He quoted part of one of my posts, then put this sentence directly afterwards. If I'm mistaken, at least you can see how one could pretty easily infer a personal insult? If he was quoting *your* statement about monkeys... would YOU consider it a personal attack?

Not to get into a political/social/moral foray, but...
First, I think Ken is right and Johan did not intend his post to be in any way an affront on Jason. I'm pretty new here, but the folks who are moderators and "regulars" of the forum are among the nicest, most helpful, and thoughtful "forumites" I have encountered! ;)
That being said, I work directly with animals (wildlife), as many of you know. I am not a member of PETA, and I feel it is only logical and sane for us all to look at the "big picture" before getting emotional about our individual beliefs and attempting to impose them on others.
So...in an effort to appease all parties and their respective points of view...AND to provide our beloved members of the Armed Forces REAL-WORLD type training:
Why not use the perfect "high-tech human simulators" (quote from the FOXNews article) to provide realistic training in gunshot wound care? That would be any number of inmates on Death Row presently (after having exhausted their rights of appeal). They could be randomly selected and told: "Tomorrow is your day! Survivors will be executed."
Just my $0.02, YMMV, IMHO, etc...etc...

Yeah.. I can see that to a point.. but he did quote the quote in your post which was attributed to another person. I think that MM was referring to that portion of the post which was obviously not your words.
I am sure MM will be around soon to clear things up.

I know what you mean. I tossed this one out, because I personally found it interesting. I had no idea such things happened, and I wanted to hear what the consensus would be from others.
I must admit... I had a little cringe when I submitted the thread :o.

I can understand that, as his second sentence is definitely a general statement about his experiences overall. His first sentence, however, (at least to me) is... or at least can be construed as... very specific and not painted with such a broad brush.
But I'll admit I could be completely off base here.
And getting back on topic... Morrie, I think you're 100% right on with your logical conclusion. After sufficient animal testing, the next step is testing on humans.

I apologize if you took it as a personal insult, it wasn't intended as such. I quoted your quote and commented on that.
I agree that animal testing serve a purpose, but I also believe it's something that shouldn't be abused (Maybe I'm throwing logs on the fire but animal testing of cosmetics is something I regard as questionable ). And yeah, I hug a tree every once in a while...

It was not directed towards any specific person [on this forum] at all. It was a general figure of speech. If I was refering to anyone it was to the idiots that beat up my 16 year old son last saturday.
I am sure MM will be around soon to clear things up.
The time difference unfortunately made "soon" "later" :(
