We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.--last paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, 2 July 1776
The Declaration was officially adopted by 12 of the 13 colonies on 4 July 1776. New York was on board by 9 July.
Today marks the 232nd year of our Independence.

We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" I noticed some Dylan Thomas quoted here from the film Independance Day. Something I have never understood is the American facination with the works of Dylan Thomas. I live in the area he lived and know people (now elderly) who knew Dylan Thomas, and generally he is regarded as a drunken waster who owed people money. The only people who seem to like him locally are those who cash in on his name through tourism. Unfortunately, I am not one of them.
