I don't know quite what to make of this. The past couple of weeks, my face has been noticeably red. Doesn't feel hot as if razor burned, just, well - red. To the point where a couple of people at work have said, "so, what's with your face?"

At first, I thought it was some new bath soap I've been using since there was some red on my forehead too (scrubbing too hard?), but it was mostly the shaven area. I went back to my old bath soap (been using it for years). Didn't seem to help. Made a conscious effort to apply zero pressure with the DE. Nope. Used a variety of creams and soaps (GFT, Taylor, MB, T&H, C&E, Tabac, whatever)...Still RED. BTW, normal routine is shower first, then NS, SN, across the grain and touch up if needed. Followed by cold rinse, Thayer's and aftershave of some variety. All has been fine for several months now, then all of a sudden...this RED thing!

So, this morning, I tried something desperate. [Caution...graphic mental images ahead. Parental control advised!] I shaved with a fresh cartridge in my old M3!! Not only did I have at least as smooth a shave as I've been getting with a DE, but I did it with ONE ATG pass plus touch up! Not a typo...ONE PASS, AGAINST THE GRAIN. No nicks, no nothin', just BBS. And no red! What??? Yes, cartridges cost more, but time and comfort are worth something, right?

Not sure where I'm going with this, but I guess if anyone's had a similar experience, I'd love to hear about it. Maybe I'll use the M3 for a couple of days and go back to DE and see what happens. I DO enjoy the relaxing 3-4 pass routine, but damn, that one pass BBS sure was nice! Any and all opinions welcome! (Just don't ban me for the M3 thing! :o)

Wow! That is interesting and disturbing.

Keep us up to date when you go back to the DE.

Michael, I don't want to anger the DE gods :scared003 , but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Sometimes when you hit a bad spot like the kind of irritation you were experiencing, you change one or other thing until you find the problem. Like you said, you don't have to abandon the DE altogether, but you might have to mix 'em up and make the cartridges part of your routine.

You don't mention what blades you use. Perhaps that is one variable to look at. (Try a sharper one like Feathers, change 'em out after only one or two shaves, try an adjustable if you don't have one already...)

Hey, if the M3 works for you, and you still like to use a brush and soaps or creams and like the shaves, use what works. But, yeah, I would miss DE shaving, too. Hope it works out for ya, man.

Blair, I'm USING Feathers! They actually seem better when they're a couple of shaves old, whatever THAT means - but I'm still red. I do have some Merkurs around here somewhere, maybe I'll give those a go. If that changes things, I'll look into Derbys or something.

I suppose I could always do three passes with the M3! :p

Wow...I thought maybe you weren't going sharp enough, so you were kinda dragging the razor across your face to get close and making the irritation worse. Hmm...I know Feathers can be pretty erratic for me. One might work fine, the other stinks. And they do seem to settle in after a few shaves (weird, I know).

I have very good luck with Gillette Swedish Euro blades. Kinda tough to get, but TESC has 'em for $3.55 per five pack. That's a little high with shipping on top of that, but still less than the cartridges. I just order about five or six packs at the time so the shipping is worth it.

Have you tried a gentler blade, like an ip, or a sharp? I would highly recommend trying them if you haven't. Feathers are just too harsh for me.

If it is a M3 then so be it. (its still wet shaving right) ya won't get banned for it............but if you use Gillette Foamy with it maybe :rofl

Michael
02-28-2007, 11:15 PM
I haven't used Foamy in about 40 years so I don't think that'll be an issue. Besides, I have a zillion tubs of "the good stuff" and some very nice silvertips - so I can't imagine going there!

One thing I didn't mention...I bought the Feathers in early December and have been using them exclusively since then. Only in the past couple of weeks have I had this problem. I've used the Feathers in a 1949 SS, a '60 SS, a Slant, a 1906 Gillette Single Ring and the B&B Merkur HD (sorry, but that's all I have! ;)). Since the Superspeeds are supposed to be the mildest, I've been using the '49 lately. Doesn't seem to matter.

Tomorrow, the '49 SS, a fresh Merkur and maybe some C&E Almond. We shall see.

Michael,

What ever works for you man, whatever works! One neat thing I've noticed here at the Shave Den, so far, is that there are no Shaving Police here....shhhhh!

If you like the M3, then so be it my man. Use it when you want, how you want, anytime you want....and enjoy the shave. Hey...switch it up if you want....M3 a few days, DE some days.

I use my Sensor some days, not often but I use it. Hey Shaving Police....did ya' hear that? PottyDoctor uses a cartridge razor some days! :D

One thing I refuse to give up are my badger brushes and my soaps and creams....no way baby!!!

Like a famous man [could've been Elvis] once said....."This ain't rocket science....it's shaving....so lighten up and enjoy the ride!" :rofl

Hmm, just had a thought (doesn't happen often, so bear with me). The 100 Feathers from Cotton Blossom come in 10 packs of 10. I just opened one...a couple of weeks ago! About when this problem started. Perhaps it's time to try another 10-pak!

There ya go...sorta like a murder mystery. "Eliminate all other factors, and the one which remains must be the truth." (Sherlock Holmes)

But in all seriousness, there could be some oil on, or some imperfection in, the blades you opened that might be causing your problem. Try out that Merkur, and then try another batch of the Feathers from a different pack.

Hope you find the source of the trouble.

I'd heard all the hoop-lah for a few days preceding the game [Vols vs Gators] but she topped Bruce Pearl's little publicity stunt earlier in the year IMHO. I was more shocked by her singing than her skirt.

You're right, the woman can't sing, but to come out in front of an arena full of people singing Rocky Top takes something most of us don't have. I loved the classic cheerleaders outfit and the zany hat to go with it. It's all about the Vols in this town and Bruce Pearl and Pat Summit are doing the best job of promoting UT basketball I've ever seen here.

It's nice to have some unity of spirit between the men's and women's coaches and players for a change. Anyhow, enough talkin' about UT sports. I'm not a sports fan of any kind but there's been so much press about this, no one could avoid it.

Michael,

I've got a pack or two of Feathers layin' round here somewhere myself. Layin' round because they are just way too abrasive for my sensitive skin. I had a red face for a while as well, back about a year ago, and I attributed part of it to the Feathers, not all of it. I was doing multiple things that caused mine, so I kept working to eliminate them. The Feathers are a great blade for lots of folks but they don't agree with me.

For starters I get several weepers everytime I use them and I never get any weepers with the Swedes, Israelis or Derbys. If I use a Feather two days straight...well, let's just say it's gonna' take a while to recover from the mayhem. Again, they're a great product....but not for me.

At the same time I was using aloe gel to try to recover from the bad shaves and come to find out I was having a reaction to aloe as well. I'm sure you can relate to how red my face was looking. And it was becoming harder and harder to convince people that my newly acquired passion for classic DE shaving was the best thing since sliced bread. People would look at me strange and want to know why my face was so red all the time.

I have sensitive skin so I've been red faced a few times since until I figured out the offending party. As far as blades are concerned, the Swedish Gillettes seem to be the sweet spot for me. The Israelis and Derbys are suitable [no irritation but not as close a shave] but do not excel as the Swedes do.

Good luck in resolving your mystery. And again, use whatever razor it takes to get good shaves and enjoy it. It doesn't bother me if someone wants to use a disposable or whatever, so long as it's a blade! If you can shave with your Swiss Army knife and be happy, then more power to ya! Just have a good time and enjoy the ride! :D

Just tell 'em it was the JD! ::

But seriously, thanks for the thoughtful input - from you and from everyone else. That's what I like about TSD. I can say things like, "Pat Summitt's got balls" (or about nothing in particular for that matter) and no one gets their shorts in a bunch. And at the same time, I can post a question about a serious issue (to ME anyway :)) and get offers of free blades and well thought out comments and suggestions. Well, those plus things like "How long have you been shaving your forehead?" (can't remember which smart ass asked that...;)) That's my point, I guess - serious, helpful stuff while having fun at the same time!

2nd day with the M3 today. No red. Tomorrow or Saturday, I'll give the Merkurs a shot, or the Walgreen blades that are hiding here somewhere, or JoAnna's Sharps when they arrive (should I be worried? She has my address now!)

Seems apparent to me that we have a :signs108situation here! Started out innocently enough, seriously in fact. There have been some insightful and useful suggestions regarding my "dilemma"...and I do appreciate those! However, in the midst of this, it's been a great learning experience in other ways as well. For instance, we've also learned that:

1) Pat Summitt has, um, boys... :D

2) One of our members apparently looks like Raquel Welch and there may have been a foreign substance involved,

3) Another is a smart a$$ (well, we didn't actually JUST learn that :rofl) ,

4) that I should use preshave oil on my forehead!

5) and that Will (and perhaps I) may be in serious trouble!

Have we gone astray? Of course we have, perhaps even overboard! Have we enjoyed it? I suspect so! Will some folks just shake their heads and wonder, "What ARE they thinking?!" Yup.

Michael,

I was just wondering about your dilemna with the irritation. Have you found the culprit and is the redness gone? I was very interested to hear what you narrowed the problem down to, as I have suffered through similar problems, just not as long as yours seemed to last.

Michael
03-09-2007, 08:56 PM
Ron, thanks for asking! Yeah, I found the culprit...WETSHAVING!! Different days, different shade of red. Some are only pink. This morning I used GFT Coconut (you know, the unscented stuff :D), '49 SS with one of JoAnna's Sharp blade (thanks again!) followed by Thayer's Lavender and T&H Grafton ASB. Not REALLY red (not like before), but still pink. Hell, it's still pink NOW and I shaved 12 hours ago!!!

Oh, and I didn't even get a particularly close shave since I was trying so hard not to irritate.

Maybe tomorrow, I'll break out the Norelco!!!!!

Sorry to hear things aren't much better. It seems I get irritation easily, so I'm now shaving every 1-1/2 to 2 days and the irritation is practically gone. My job allows me to shave on an extended schedule like that; not sure if yours does.

This has helped me more than anything. In addition, I know which creams produce an irritation free shave, so I tend to use them often. I have grown tired of buying so many different soaps and creams and finding they cause irritation. I am narrowing down my cream and soap rotation to creams I know that really agree with me.

It turns out I prefer creams over soaps, since they seem to offer more cushion and/or protection. Kind of strange, when I used the canned goo, I would use only one kind [Edge Clean Scent Gel] and I was totally happy with having only one cream/scent.

I love my DE shaving, but I wouldn't hesitate to use my Gillette Sensor exclusively if that's what it took to get irritation free shaves. For me, it's whatever works!

I've about decided it's probably technique for me. The chin area is usually redder than anywhere else and since I apply lather to "anywhere else" as well as my chin, pretty much HAS to be technique, blades or razor. I'm using the least agressive razor I own, so I don't think that's it. Seems to be a slight difference between the Sharps and Feathers, though I'm not convinced the Feathers are the meat grinders everyone seems to think they are.

Too many years with the M3 perhaps. Bad habits. I actually shaved again this evening after that last post (Salter's Citrus, '49 SS w/ Sharps, B&B Finest and Musgo AS). Damn near perfect. Beat's me, my friend!!

But I enjoy it too much to give up! Who'd a thought we'd be saying we actually ENJOYED shaving?! Go figure!

Well, it's been nearly a week. Any progress? Redness now gone?

As to technique, are you using a good prep? Have you read Kyle's articles at: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=9745
and at: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=4018

and have you tried any of those things?

I've also found that an "undercoat" of something with glycerin (could be just a few drops of pure gylcerin spread over your wet face, or a body lotion containing glycerin and other lubricants) just before each lathering will really make your razor glide without scraping.

And razor angle? Are you using 3-4 passes or trying to get it all in one pass plus a touch-up? That can hurt!

Thanks for asking, Fritz!! That's what I like about this place! :D

Better, not perfect. More pink than red now. And no one has said "what's with your face?" for a while now. Maybe they're just used to it? Practice, without a M3, seems to be doing the trick. Sharps and Derby's too, rather than Feathers. Haven't had a single nick since I got a pack of Sharps from JoAnna!! Derby's are even better!

Glad to hear it! But the question is not so much "razor & blade" but "preparation & technique".

The Derby Extras seem to have done the trick. Got them 3-4 shaves ago and things are much better now. After a week or two, I might even throw another Feather in there and see what happens.

As for prep and technique, shower first (usually), keep face wet throughout (warm water and washcloth between passes), assorted creams or soaps (always warm), 3 passes plus touchup, cold water rinse, witch hazel, aftershave. Very light touch, N-S, S-N, E-W. Every product I use has glycerin so no, I don't add more (I don’t even know where to GET more)! And in any case, the razor does glide, no scraping - at least not that I can feel.

Kyle's tomes? Yeah I saw them, but didn't really read. Scanned thru them and decided that that was WAY more info than I want or intend to process. Probably some good stuff in there, but not for me...

I remember when I first introduced myself to the B&B members, I made some crack like, "...you guys are NUTS!" Kyle was one who welcomed me by replying, "Thank you"! In that spirit, If I ever get that anal about shaving, I'll just buy a Norelco...or more M3 cartridges. ;)

It's just shaving, ya know? That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :signs089

Michael - check this THREAD (http://www.theshaveden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=127) out.

Just when I thought my shaves couldn't get any better, I just took them to a whole new level playing around with razor-grip.

I settled on a grip which is 100% contrary to everything you've learned elsewhere. (I now Hold the razor right below the head)

Michael

Yeah, I read that some time ago. Even tried holding the thing at the end of the handle. Lord, that was horrible!! Matter of fact, I hold mine near the head too. The razor, I mean.

Something to note..

As I have had issues with some products "RED FACE"

One other culprit is in your Shave Den....your razor! If you don't clean it often enough or well enough little :happy093 end up growing in what is a great medium for it. When you shave with the infected razor the little buggers get into your skin causing inflammation. I know its a long shot, but thought I would mention it....I have seen some of the razors people around the net use....lol

Oh, I am going to get the classic Barber Shop tool The Barbicide tower or maybe the Marvy one...now if I can only figure out where to put the thing...

No--he doesn't have a web site. He sells it to a dentist and some of his clients at the counseling center. I could PM his e-mail to anyone who might be interested. He doesn't charge outrageous prices like some do and it is good quality silver.

Like a famous man [could've been Elvis] once said....."This ain't rocket science....it's shaving....so lighten up and enjoy the ride!" :rofl

hear hear :: :: ::

I can only second that - use what works best for you. As long as you don't start using foamed goo you won't be banned over here :rofl

THats the stuff that turns your skin blue.

It won't turn your skin blue if you use it to clean, preserve skin care products or lotions, or if you use it topically. Also, the RARE cases where it turned skin grayish when it was injested were questionable. I have read that this was mainly with intrevenous use and with HUGE quantities taken over a long period of time (or when the particles were huge and the solution was very dark). Our silver is clear to pale yellow.

I take about 2-4 tablespoons of it a day and I have not had a cold or flu this year even though people sneeze, cough, and drool on me all the time at the shop, lol! A woman I work with applies it to cuts and swears her cuts heal much faster when she does this.

Anyway, I have noticed that most people I have met in the medical profession, aka, doctors and nurses, prefer the pharmacy for their cures (and those scary shots!). I don't, since I do not trust the government to keep me healthy ;-).

Peace,

Elizabeth

I hope you don't believe everything you see on CNN. You know, I wouldn't doubt if the pharmaceutical co.'s promote documentaries like the one you saw. I have really researched this and am not worried, but the beauty is, we are free to take it, or not to take it, depending on our choice.

Did a little Googling using TSD's toolbar. :D Get yours today!

And found this (http://www.silver-colloids.com/Reports/reports.html). Which says there is 3 types of Colloidal Silver being marketed today.

and

Due to the high concentration of large silver particles, silver protein products are known to cause argyria, a condition that causes the skin to turn blue-gray.

Didn't look around much more, but you guys bashing Elizabeth's suggestion need to look farther than CNN or any news report. :rolleyes005 They like sensationalism, and not providing the full story.

Hmm, just had a thought (doesn't happen often, so bear with me). The 100 Feathers from Cotton Blossom come in 10 packs of 10. I just opened one...a couple of weeks ago! About when this problem started. Perhaps it's time to try another 10-pak!

its very rare for Feathers to get a bad blade but they do exist, one time I remember using a fresh blade and it dragged #$$@#%^$%^#@$# very BAD BAAAAD Blade. took another and it was ok again.

you should definitly try a Derby Extra might be your ball game for inbetween sharpness.

You my friend have to find a new site for M3 shavers. So long and happy trails. :D

...I use my Sensor some days, not often but I use it. Hey Shaving Police....did ya' hear that? PottyDoctor uses a cartridge razor some days! :D

Yes, sir. We did indeed hear that. Would you mind stepping out of the vehicle, Mr. PottyDoctor sir? I'm sorry sir, but it seems you are in possession of an illegal Sensor razor. This is in violation of Delta City ordinance 5-2296/NA7. It seems you also use said instrument some days, which is a violation of directive 10-666/NOT.

While these are serious violations, your breathalyzer test is negative. And since you seem like a fine upstanding citizen, we're going to let you off with a verbal warning:
Use a DE. . .and stay out of trouble!

Have a nice day :)

It's not that you can't get a very nice shave from an M3, it's that if you use it ATG every day (or even maybe WTG), there's a good chance you'll get irritated.

BTW, anybody see the new Dorco 6-blade razor?
