Interesting story from this morning that I feel I must share:

So this morning I got a nice lather of Mama Bear's wonderful Bay Rum soap whipped up and proceeded to go to work with my beloved slant bar.

I got to thinking mid shave that it'd be really nice to keep the bay rum thing going and remembered the bottle of Pinaud I had stashed away under the sink.

Finished up my shave and did the final rinse. Inspecting my handy work in the mirror, gotta love the BBS. I proceeded to retrieve my Pinaud and pour a bit into my cupped hand... smells a little too "clovey" but that's ok, it's manly cloves dangit! Poured myself out a nice generous handfull, cause I'm a big guy and need a bigger spash... this was bad idea #2.

Now came the big moment, the firm and confident process of slapping the aftershave the face. Mmmm... smells nice, stings a little... ok stinging a little more... sh*t this stuff kinda burns... ok now it's really f'n burning!!! About this time my wife walks in, I'm sure I looked real attractive standing there looking in the mirror in full Bay Rum fury with red face, bloodshot eyes, clinched fist, and probably mumbling some obscenity to the shave gods. I guess she wasn't fully awake yet or wasn't in the mood to give me crap. Instead I just got that nice "you're a moron" glance as she went about her business.

Thankfully the pain was short lived and once the flames subsided I was left with nice smooth feeling face and a nice lingering fragrance. I guess I must have gotten a little wicked with the slant cause I don't remember it burning this bad the few times I tried it in the past.

The moral of the story...

Respect the Pinaud :ashamed001

I know THAT look !! :rofl
Mike, do you warm rinse and then cold rinse B4 applying your AftaShave splashes ???
I know that makes a HUGE diff for me, in terms of the sting quotient.

That's the problem with that stuff. It sneaks up on you. Just when you start thinking, "This isn't so bad," it turns on the afterburners and makes you suffer.

Yeah, I did the usual rinse routine though I probably should have kept my face pretty wet before putting on the AS. Next time I get the courage to stand up to the Pinaud slap, I'll try that and see if it helps.

yeah, it does, but then it feels real nice. I use it as a cologne, and the wife loves the scent of it.

This morning as I was finishing my shave, I decided I was not going to let Pinaud beat me! This time I left a lot more water on my face and cut the Bay Rum with a bit of water in my hands before slapping it on. The sting was much more mild and actually felt really nice and refreshing. The scent mutes just a touch so instead of that big clove punch to the face, you actually get the pleasant Bay Rum we all love.

This is how I'll use it from now on. But it's kinda like bungee jumping... you have to try it straight to the face at least once :rofl

Oh it was a good burn!

But nice at the same time.

The face feels great, after the burn subsides. I don't think pure alcohol could burn any worse than this stuff.

Yea, for some reason the Pinaud Bay Rum really burns, much more so than the other Pinaud AS's. I think it should be banned because of the scent, way tooooo much clove. Wife always thinks I smell like cheap Christmas punch when I wear it.

I've been using Pinaud Bay Rum for a couple of years. It tells you how good your shave is. Actually, any alcohol based a/s does the same. Especially Old Spice. If you are getting severe burning...you need to focus on your shave! It's not the Pinaud, it's probably your shaving angle and a need to focus.

This one's different than typical alcohol based a/s. I don't get any sting with it when it's applied, but then a slow burn comes on that builds for a minute or two and gets pretty warm before subsiding.

Personally I love the stuff and use it at least once a week.

Used Pinaud bay rum this morning after my first and excellent shave w/Ogallala bay rum and KMF unscented superlather. The scent of this soap is great, but the lather is the worst I've seen unless you "doctor" it up w/some KMF.

The burn isn't so bad if you do a warm/cold rinse, followed by an alum block. If you apply the alum and then let your face dry (so you can feel the alum tighten up your skin), then cold rinse/pat dry and then cut the Pinaud w/a couple of drops of glycerin, the burn isn't so bad.

Otherwise...:shocked003

And I must be the only one but I actually like the clove scent. And, based on what I've read about it, I wouldn't doubt if it was the clove that made the pinaud sting more than most. But I've only tried the bay rum, so I may be wrong if the other scents burn the same.

Do ALL the Pinaud AS' burn the same?
I have, and enjoy quite a lot, the Special Reserve.
It does burn but not as much as some other BayRums I have......

Nope.

I have Musk, Lime Sec, Citrus Musk.

None of them burn like Bay Rum does.

I got rid of my Bay Rum and picked up some Masters from Sally's. That's a much nicer AS in my opinion. Much more balanced fragrance, not as "clovey" smelling. Just as cheap too!

Agreed.

Its gotta be the clove.

I must be a massochist, b/c I like it. I don't mind it, but am not a big fan of menthol. So getting a morning kick in the face from the Pinaud really wakes me up.

I picked up some masters and I actually prefer the Pinaud scent over the Masters. Masters is too "sweet" and smells like brown sugar & cinnamon to me. Plus the scent is fleeting IMO. Overall It's good stuff, w/the glycerin & low burn and all, but I actually prefer the Pinaud scent...and the burn.

I can't wake up without that burn anymore. It has replaced my coffee. I love me some Bay Rum. However, I am using the Ogallala right now - has a "Slower Burn", not as immediate and in your face, but that comforting BR burn that we all seem to enjoy. The Ogallala is not nearly as "Clovey" and though I still occasionally use the Pinaud, it is at the back of my tray right now.

I have a similar tale, but mine was Colgate-Pomolive's Mennan Skin Bracer, splashed on an amount the size of a dime. My whole face was in flames. Good thing my wife did not hear me muttered a few obsenities to the shave gods. I am going through a bottle of Combe's Acqua Velva at the moment, does not burn any where as much as the Skin Bracer.
