Coates Tea Tree....Who Can Match or Exceed It? That is the question.
Allow me to explain. I am among many who loved Coates Tea Tree Shave Cream. It was the only Coates cream I had the pleasure of trying. However, as everyone knows, Coates creams are history, they are to be no more.
The Tea Tree was among the top two creams everyone raved about when it came to Coates [the other was Rose]. The consistency of Coates cream was somewhat creamier or softer than the original Taylor creams in my opinion. And so far as I know, Coates was the only company to make a Tea Tree cream. There was no mistake about it being Tea Tree, for when one unscrewed the lid, the true tea tree scent was there in a fairly strong way. It was by no means overpowering, at least to me. And the healing properties of the cream were fantastic. In addition, it easily produced a thick, rich lather which was a treat to slather on ones face.
This would be a great cream for someone to make. Not a tea tree scented cream, but a cream with real tea tree essential oil in it, so one can reap the benefits of it. Now I'm not sure what other oils could be added to compliment the tea tree scent, but I'm sure there are many of you that could suggest something very compatible. The only one that comes to mind for me at this time would be peppermint. Something that balances it out so it doesn't have a 'mediciny' smell.
A tea tree soap might be great as well. I was hoping some Shave Den friends could chime in with your take on what could match or exceed Coates Tea Tree cream...which is now only a memory.

OK....I know there have been mixed reports...but I don't think many gents(or ladies ) have tried it. The Real Shaving Company which is an Affiliate of Creightons PLC produces Shaving Cream which contains Tea Tree Oil in much the way you describe. I have used it a number of times and have enjoyed it.

CAREFUL tho.....very strong stuff.
Cuppa drops is plenty.

Supposedly Coates has gotten completely out of the shaving cream business. Their creams were loved by many. I don't know what the inside story on their departure is.

OK, need some input from the tea tree and essential oil experts here. I have done a little reading about tea tree oil and it looks like there may be a marked difference between the real or pure tea tree oil and tea tree essential oil. That's where my question comes in.
Is the essential oil version primarily for fragrance?
Must one use the pure tea tree oil in order to have the real antiseptic and healing benefits of tea tree oil in addition to the fragrance?
What are the best brands and/or sources for real tea tree oil and/or essential oil?
In what amounts and how do you blend it with your shaving soaps and/or creams?

Good info - I've been looking into Tea Tree products to use for shaving.
My face can give me problems - any type of irritation can lead to bumps and/or some acne. And my skin tends to be oily but then can dry out easily when I try to wash it more.
This is my first post here - good to see some familiar "faces" or at least names.

Before I started wetshaving, I used tea tree oil on a regular basis due to my ingrowns and razor bumps. However, I have not used any of it in at least 9 months or so- I wonder why?

Dusty,
Thanks for bringing that to our attention. I've never heard of it before, although I have heard of the company. Maybe someone could look over the ingredients list and tell us a little more about it; it's hard for us non-scientific types to cipher.
The price is certainly right and might be worth trying. Anyone had any experience with Melaleuca Naturals Shave Creme, or their products in general?

Dusty,
I bought some and tried it.
It's a non-lather cream and not what I was looking for.
OTOH, the shaves were fine.
I regifted it to my DAD.....(Mach3 shower shaver) :o

There's an aussie based company called Trishave (trishave.com) that sells a tea tree shaving cream. I haven't tried it, but it's what was recommended to me when I asked about a Coates replacement over at a different forum. Don't know whether it's brushless or not.
I HAVE used The Real Shaving co. "cooling" shave cream, their face wash, their asb, and some weird preshave product called hot shave. ALL of their products contain tea tree oil, but not enough to even notice or smell it. The hot shave you could notice, but only b/c it had actual tea tree leaves/bits in the product. Doubt it had enought to reap the real benefits of it.
In regards to pure vs essential oil, I bought 2 ozs of tea tree essential oil from a local business, taylored concepts (tayloredconcepts.com), and it smells and has been working just like some tea tree oil that I'd gotten at GNC. I use it to combat ingrowns and minor acne. It was the cheapest place I could find, around $3.20 for two ounces in a nice brown glass bottle.
I think the effectiveness of EO depends on whether you get "pure" essential oil, or essential oil that's a blend of the scented oil you want AND other "carrier" oils. I'm sure the kind that's a blend probably dillutes the effectiveness. The kind I have is not blended.
hope that helps, let me know if you find an alternative. I was never able to try the Coates stuff, but am also looking for a good tea tree shaving cream.
Wow J !!
Nice first post.
Greetings to you, my friend !!

To revive an old thread.
I just picked up a couple of bottles of NOW Tea Tree Oil today at a local health food store [a package of two 1-ounce bottles for $9.99]. I mixed a few drops with some Kiss My Face Unscented Cream tonight and the scent was definitely nice. A plus was the fact I had no irritation or reaction from it. I look forward to further experimentation with my new Tea Tree Oil.
Here's the link to the NOW Tea Tree Oil: http://www.nowfoods.com/?action=itemdetail&item_id=3147
Interesting, they also have a Lavender-Tea Tree Oil, which I might try later. http://www.nowfoods.com/?action=itemdetail&item_id=43797
Lavender and Tea Tree just might make a nice combination. I might add some Tea Tree Oil to a batch of Castle Forbes or AOS Lavender cream and see what happens. Hmmmmm.....;)

Ron:

Rick, the Coates was ofcourse in a tub and was a fairly firm consistency much like Taylor's or Trumper's; a classic for sure.
The KMF cream is a liquid and makes a 'fluffier' lather. I actually prefer a creamier lather. However, the Tea Tree scent comes through great and is something I will continue to use. I primarily use the KMF creams to mix with other creams or soaps, as it produces a fantastic Super Lather.
Being a Lavender lover, I plan to mix the Tea Tree with some Lavender. I also have the eShave Assortment Kit on the way and may try some TTO with a scent or two of the eShave.
This is my first essential oil to add to the shave shack, but I can see that I will be purchasing other scents in the future. How 'bout a batch of some Super Scented Lavender cream? The possibilities are endless I am sure. As Emeril would say, "Let's kick 'er up a notch!" :D
BAM !
I, too, like the KMF for superlather.
I use it more for PreLather but when the brush and whatever hits it...
Its ALLLLgood !
keep us posted on your new concoctions.

Here's a shave cream from Em's Place that has Tea Tree in it. Her creams are supposedly a liquid, similar in consistency to KMF, according to a couple of reviews I've read. I've considered ordering this one but hoped someone might have some additional feedback on Em's Skindicinal Blend.
Here's her description of the scent and as well as a general description of her cream.
Skindicinal Blend - Eucalyptus, Lavender, Tea Tree and Myrrh. Has a fresh, light, camphoraceous aroma with a sweet, balsamic undertone. This therapeutic blend is especially beneficial for troubled skin.
Em's Lathering Shave Cream
For use with a shaving brush - rich in glycerin, natural botanicals and essential oils for scent. A moisturizing lather with lots of glide that rinses clean for a close comfortable shave. This natural shaving cream contains no colorants, synthetic fragrances or other harsh ingredients and is formulated for sensitive skin. Pure essential oils are used for aroma and skin conditioning benefits. A naturally thin, pearlescent formula for use with a brush that comes in a handy convenience pump bottle and available in three sizes - 2, 4, and 8 ounce.
Ingredients: Aqua, Potassium Stearate/ Myristate/ Cocate (veg. source), Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice, Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Persea Gatissima (Avocado) Oil, Sodium Stearate/ Myristate/ Cocate (veg. source), Algin (from kelp), Ascorbyl Palmitate (vit. C), Phospholipids (plant source), Retinyl Palmitate (vit. A), Sorbic Acid (fruit source), Sodium Bicarbonate, Tocopheryl Acetate (vit. E), Allantoin (from Comfrey), Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B-5) and essential oils as applicable.

Interesting. I've been thinking the same things about what to do when my stock of Coates Tea Tree runs out. (Four tubs, at the moment). My current theory is adding the tea tree oil to Taylors unscented. Although it is not the same, I think Taylor is as close to Coates as I can get in an unscented cream....

Ron:
EM's BayRum ASB is very powerful stuff.
Long lasting and really moisturizing.
That said....
if you like subtle fragrances that dont linger.....DONT BUY THIS ONE.
I, however, really like the product a great deal.
The scent is very complex to me.
Spicy, I get cloves quite a bit and some nutmeg.
My favorite shave right now, well...for awhile now
mamaBear BR cream
Michelsons (or Master) BR AS
EM's BR cream
RNB BR w/ a squeeze EdT
If I had only 1 shave left that would be the one for me.
Just buy some....you know you want to
and dont forget the Exotic Butter Cream.
Its very thick and rich and has lotsa goodies in it.
I like it as a nighttime moisturizer or in tandem with a spritz of AS.

I've had the Exotic Butter Cream for quite some time and it is for sure one fine moisturizer, especially for winter time. I will be ordering Em's Shave Cream soon; probably the Skindicinal, maybe the Lavender and Bay Rum. She has some trial sizes available.

To kind of update this thread.
I've been mixing a few drops of tea tree oil with J.M. Fraser's Shave Cream. This makes a very nice 'Tea Tree Shave Cream'. The Fraser's has enough citrus and other fragrances in it that it blends very, very well with the tea tree fragrance.
The Coates Tea Tree Shave Cream was not a 'straight' tea tree scent. It had some other fragrances blended in as well. I don't have any left to compare with the Fraser's home blend. Hopefully someone has both and could make us a comparison.
My verdict however is that my new 'Fraser's Tea Tree Shave Cream' has a very nice tea tree fragrance to it and as always, Fraser's give a top notch shave! And at a great price I might add! What more could ya' ask for? ;)

Another cream I really like is C&E Sweet Almond Oil, great lather, I have a couple tubs ;) if you haven't tried it's pretty nice.
YMMV,
