View Full Version : How many brushes?

PalmettoB

Out of curiosity, I wondered how many brushes some of us have in our arsenal. I know from other threads that some only have one, a goto brush like a C&E best badger brush. Some have one of those lovely TOP brushes. I have three, and the old boar one I started with.

So how many do you have? Tell it all! Which is your favorite?

I have 24 brushes that nearly cover the entire shaving brush gamut

boar's hair, pure badger, best, super/silvertip, "finest"

Surrey, Wilkinson Sword, SCS, C&E, E&J, Omega, Savile Row, Shavemac, Rooney, Simpson

knot diameters of 19mm - 30+mm

3 for me....
well. 2 right now but 1 more on the way.

My very 1st brush, the C&E BBB, will be replaced by a Simpsons Chubby1 in Super. This is / was my go-to for soaps.
#2: Omega Elegant
- Primarily for creams. Big, floppy and very lux.
#3: B&B Finest in Ebony
- When I want to treat myself. Great brush that works with everything. Must say this is my Fave right now.

I've got two boar brushes (a Proraso/Omega and a BurmaShave) and an Italian made badger brush whose brand I can't recall at the moment. I only use the boar brushes for travel when I use shave sticks. At home I only use the badger.

Do you have a favorite? Or at least a favorite brand/manufacturer?

02-23-2007, 06:41 PM
I acquired the following brushes (in chronological order):
Vulfix 2236
C&E BBB
Plisson Small Black Pure
Simpson’s Tulip 2 Super
SMF III
B&B finest ebony

My workhorse remains my Simpson which will be very hard to beat. When I want a change of pace, I grab my SMFIII or B&B. The other brushes, I could put them back in their respective boxes.

Four, and I think I'm done ...but a Rooney Silvertip sure looks nice!

"Barbershop" Pure Bristle (I should trash it, but I've had it soooo long...)
Edwin Jagger Medium Silvertip
Kent BK8
B&B Finest Horn

My favorite? Not sure yet. Just received the B&B yesterday and have only used it once. Actually, it's similar to the Kent which, for me, is a good thing - I LOVE my Kent! The B&B isn't quite as floppy and is REALLY luxurious! Jury's still out, but it's either the BK8 or the B&B.

PottyDoctor's Shave Brushes

Omega Boar Brush -- very rarely use this one. A little too scrubby for my tastes.

C&E Best Badger Brush 20mm -- my favorite soap making brush. I would prefer slightly softer, but I don't think it would be as good at making soaps explode with lather. I use this brush once every week or so.

Vulfix 2235 Super Badger 23mm -- my first Badger brush when I started wetshaving again [mid 2005]. Slightly floppy, but oooh so soft. Great cream brush. Still in my rotation; love the extra long handle. A great value in a brush!

Savile Row 3120 Silvertip 20mm -- soft on the face, surgical precision, great on soaps or creams. The smallest brush I would ever want, handle a little small for large hands.

ShaveMac 22579 Silvertip 23mm -- my go to brush! Soft on the face, superb cream brush, creates exploding lather. Probably the largest brush I would want. Love the faux horn handle, just the right size.

Shave Brush Wish List -- Savile Row 3722 & 3824. C&E Super Badger. Possibly even a Kent or Simpson.

PottyDoctor....who started out looking for a brush & ended up with a new hobby [aka disorder, obsession]???

C&E Travel brush
eShave closeout pure scritchy badger
Buffalo pure badger

Just tried the Buffalo today (it is a vintage brush). It says pure badger on the handle, but the look of the bristles is different. At first I thought it was a boar brush, but no...first shave this morning with it, and lovely soft bristles, no scratchiness as I would expect from something labelled pure badger.

My road to the ideal brush has been long and expensive. I have tried many brushes, including the gigantic Kent BK12, several Simpson's, a Plisson HMW, SR 3226, and others. But I have finally settled on two brushes (plus a small travel brush) that fulfill all my requirements. I find the Rooney Style 1 medium finest a superb cream brush. For soaps, my favorite is the Rooney Style 3 small finest. With these two brushes, I have lost interest in acquiring any more.
