I found a new place and have heard some good things around about Freemans Sporting Club. They sell clothing, have a classic barber, as well as shave gear and creams/soaps. If anybody wants to check it out, heres a link.

The only thing I dont like are the prices. $40 for a haircut?? thats almost 4 times as much as I pay!!! Pretty neat though that theres an alternative to the typical hair places

I just shave my head down with a buzzer so I do my haircuts by my self. Once in a while I go to a shop. I just found a nice old style barber shop with 1 chair and a huge vintage mirror and vintage barber share. Its pretty cool.
I brought this up more for the price as a shave. Its atleast half as much compared to AOS and all the other places that charge 65+ for a really bad shave.

Is the straight shave with a fixed blade straight, or a disposable blade? I got all excited when a new barber opened up here offering straight shaves - I really wanted to see a pro stropping in person, and to bend their ear about hones and where they sourced their stuff etc., but health and safety regulations meant that they could only use disposable blade straights.

I'm not entirely sure. I do believe that is with a fixed blade straight. I mean lets be honest, its NYC, people are easily angered. Nobody wants some guy going at their face with a disposable anything.

I don't think anybody is doing shaves with a traditional straight anymore. I've seen a few people post that they have a barber who does, but they're the rare exception that are willing to ignore regulations. At best, you'll get a shave with a disposable. The health ramifications are too great and nobody wants to deal with an autoclave, etc.

I'm pretty sure that barber licenseing and that sort of thing are done on a state level and so are the healthcodes and whatnot they must follow. I've actually heard of a good amount of places who still use a straight.
In all honesty, I rather have a straight use on me in terms of health. If the man knows what hes doing that razor will be wiped down all the way down to the individual atoms of meatal being reorganized on the top. As for disposables, I expect many just stick a new blade in and never wash that handle.
