A while back I had posted that my mother gave me one of my grandfather's DE Gillette razors. She swears she has his other ones somewhere in her house but has not located them yet. Well, the one I did get, I finally cleaned it up today. I soaked it in a bowl of hot water and some palmolive dish soap. Took a soft toothbrush to it and got it sparkling clean. I was really impressed. I am now working up the courage to use the thing. Just for practice, I purchased the cheapest pack of DE blades I could find. Tonight, during my shave. I gave it a pass from my sideburns, down my cheek and to my chin. That's all the courage I could muster up. I was scared to try it on my neck region yet cause thats my problem area. But I was amazed at how how easy it seemed to mow those stubbles down....with some cheap blades at that.

Anyhow. No razor burn from it and it seemed quiet easy to me for some reason. Little more practice and I will work on shaving my neck and chin area with it as well. I thought it would be harder to shave; with the bulk of the head and all. But no prob. Seemed comfortable.

Now. I have a pic of it if someone could please help me identify the model of GIllette I have. And I would also like to know where to find the date codes on it. One more question. I don't have a lot of money to spend on ordering expensive blades right now. Is there a good brand I could pick up at drugstores and what-not? Thanks for listening. Sorry for so many questions but I feel like a little kid on Christmas......with my shiny new razor. haha

That is a black handled superspeed, I believe they ran from 69 to 74, but if you have a date code we can find when yours was made. Should be a nice razor. Congratulations on your first successful (partial) shave, and welcome aboard!

The date code should be on the bottom of the head, a letter and a number.

I meant to address this earlier. :ashamed001

Personnas are the only blades available locally for most people. So, they are probably what you already have.

As for other brands of blades, we have Crystals and Derbys (http://theshaveden.com/store/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=10) in TSD Store, and I can offer you first class shipping, which shouldn't be much. First Class shipping isn't available through the store, some issue with the settings. But if you tell me what blades you want, I can send you an invoice.

If you are looking for somewhere local, you may want to see if you have any local tobacco stores that stock traditional wetshaving goods. Many of them do and will cary various things such as Merkur and Col. Conk. That's how I originally got started on Merkur blades several years ago.

Thanks guys. I was thinking it may have been a super speed. Out of the two brands that the store carries, derby and the crystals, which one would be a good choice for a first timer? I think you guys may be seeing the creation of a shave-obsessed fool. Too bad my pockets don't allow to start collecting a little more. But hey....baby steps. For the first time in years, I actually kinda look forward to shaving. I think my wife may need some Prozac or some sedative to zone my "Shave talking" right on out. :D

Not sure how "local" TSD Store is to him, JayKay. :)

Certainly try some other blades. Personally, I don't find any of the commonly available local blades to be decent. Where I live, I can only find russian gillettes, and the personna's at wally world. If those were the only two blades I had access to, I'd not be wetshaving. If you decide to order blades from the TSD store, remind me, and i'll give JoAnna a few of the other blades I have lying around (not in TSD store)to include in your shipment. Finding the correct blade for YOU makes all the difference in the world.

I'll take care of the reminding part. ;)

I thought by referring to "that store" he was talking local. My bad. But than again, everything is local these days. GFT got my cream from london to Umass in under a week with regular royal shipping.
