Does anyone else use this technique (suspending their shaving mug in a bigger pot of very hot water) to get hot lather?

No, but ive seen it done in many various ways.
I use a scuttle, but ive kinda moved away from it as well. I dont mind a little lather on the cool side. One less thing to clean up....

I'm with Isaac here. I used to use a scuttle I made but I haven't used it in quite a while.

If you want to keep you mug warm, just put it in the sink filled with hot water. Works great, you don't need anything else.

Well, that does keep the lather warm, but I aways wind up sloshing water in it when I'm rinsing between passes.
I use a coffee mug warmer that's barely acceptable (9W) if I turn it on well in advance. I've tried higher wattage units (17W), but those get TOO hot. I don't know if it'll ruin my brushes so I stick with the marginal one. And yes, it's plugged into a GFI.

So there's a device called a "scuttle"?
And I had the same problem with Mike re. the sink.

There are many types of scuttles. A popular one is the Moss scuttle named after Dr. Chris Moss.

You fill the large lower pot with hot water and place your soap or cream in the top portion. The heat from the hot water rising up will keep the lather warm.
Think of it kind of like a double boiler in cooking.

I've got a latte' mug and a smaller piece of pottery that my fiance' got me ahwile back which fits perfectly inside of the mug. No electricity required and it keeps my lather warm through out the entire shave. Plus it didn't cost more than 10 bucks.

It's bain-marie.
We can ban her too. ;)

Yep. me too......
I don't have a scuttle yet, but use a large mug....sometimes if I want some warm lather...I'll fill the sink with hot water and just sit the large mug in there for a bit....warms the lather nicely..;) without taking up more room.

I use a Corning soup mug that has a plastic lid for use in the microwave. You can get them for $3-5 at Target or K-Mart. With the lid on tight one can float it in the sink without worrying about spilling water into it. Also they are quite large. Works great! I just wish they came with a black interior.

A scuttle is on my wishlist, I'd like one of those german ones AS REVIEWED HERE (http://www.theshaveden.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=53). I think ShaveMac sells them too...
