Scrubbing vs painting...

I've heard some people say that using a scrubbing motion is hard on a brush. I doubt it, and I don't care if it does. If it wears out my brush, I'll just replace it. No problem...I'm not into mega expensive brushes anyway. So that's not what I'm writing about it.

I always use a scrubbing motion for my first pass. It helps build a good lather, exfoliates (which I don't really care about), and I figure it sort of lifts the whiskers a bit, making them a bit easier to cut.

But I'm torn on what to do for the subsequent passes. It seems to me that if it's good for the first pass, then maybe it's good for the others too. But there's got to be such a thing as too much exfoliation, right? So maybe a paintbrush stroke is more appropriate. But on that final ATG pass, I figure I need all the help I can get, so maybe I should use a scrubbing motion again.

I tell ya, it's a wonder I can manage to shave at all with all the decisions required. :rofl

haven't been at this long, but this is the method i use. i tried just painting, but i didn't like the way it feels

Def. Scrub and lots of it aswell , today I scrubbed as if my life depended on it why ? because I was using the Tabac shave stick and thus I need to scrub to build the lather on the face, I could really notice today that I got an excellent shave lots of scrubbing. could be the Tabac is just a wonderfull soap and scrubbing or not would have gotten me a splendid shave still I think it helped getting more hair to a stand up position thus a closer cut.

Swirl and finish with paint. I exfoliate in the shower.

My brushing is usually linear -- up-down or side-to-side -- but with some pressure to get the hairs pushing on the skin. I don't think the exfoliation is too much from say a best or silvertip brush; you're wanting to remove the skin loose enough for those grades to get at anyway. The linear motion also helps me apply a more uniform layer of lather as well.

This describes me exactly. Scrubbing to begin with and then final 'paint over' to deliver a good thick lather.

Me too! Anything which I lather on my face.....I scrub initially, and then paint. When using the creams which I lather in a bowl......I usually just paint.

Yeah, I don't "scrub" really hard, but I do want a brush that will stand up well to some serious rubbing. I tend to massage more on the first pass, then a "paint" to even out the lather to get a good razor pass. After that I probably kinda swirl and paint at the same time before subsequent passes.

I'm with you on that one. Any exfoliation you are going to get from the brush pales in comparison to that which you will receive from the blade.

I think this 'scrubbing' or exfoliating with the brush is a lot of crapola.

You wash your face, scrub it with a brush, then run a razor blade over it, how many layers of skin cells are you trying to remove?

I prefer to apply the lather, with the softest, gentlest, circular motion I can possibly enjoy. I save the scrubbing for the kitchen floor. :D

Squeeze brush, scrub, and paint on the 3rd pass(ATG).
