The History Channel is airing a show on World's Sharpest. They covered the Japanese sword, Cutco cutlery and now it looks like they'll do a segment on double edge and straight razors.

They just showed a barber honing a straight razor on a barber's hone. He went really fast and used a finger to hold down and guide the tip of the razor. He also started at the heel at the top of the hone and the blade at maybe a 45-50 degree angle, came down and swept the razor from heel to tip in a curving motion. I'd not seen that technique used before.

I wonder if Lynn saw that show.....that guy did it different than what I expected. I suppose it works...the customer looked like he got a pretty close shave.
The DE blade thing was interesting as well.

The honing looked okay, but the guy definitely needed a better stropping technique. It looked like he was pretty careless and not keeping the spine and edge on the strop at the same time.

+1 on the stropping....it looked like that strop had seen a lot of abuse over the years as well.

It was pretty cool, especially when they got to the industrial shredders. I've never seen a refrigerator get shredded before!

For those with satellite TV this program will be shown again at midnight Eastern. History Channel reruns most programs every couple of months. This one, Modern Marvels episode 614 (http://www.history.com/shows.do?action=detail&episodeId=276856), originally aired 10/11/07 and again on 01/17/08.
I've never owned a straight and know very little about them but I've had many barber shop shaves over the years. Most stropping I saw seemed to be mostly show for the customer. The razor got four or five fast strokes flipped back and forth each time on a very loosely held drooping strop attached to the chair. Some had a rhythm to it like shining shoes.
