Man, that is purty! Wonder what it'll sell for?
It's a convertible model. Open or closed comb, depending on the toughness of your beard. :D

he's put the comb on upside down?
But why is there a handle recess on the top part of the comb?

There isn't a handle recess, I think. It's just three holes.
But you're definetly right, the comb is upside down.

But the centre hole has a flattened area around it.
I have a razor that has this done as well.

It ensures that the top flat part of the screw on handle makes contact all the way around on the concave part of the razor.
This razor however has the recess on the convex side.

????????????Micheal up there ^^^mentioned convertible razor. But in this configuration I think the blade would point up. It would be like shaving with the blade at a 150 degree angle to your face. Might make for a smooth irritation free shave, but its not going to take off a lot of hair.

Well, that razor sure looks purdy. I'm guessing: It'll sell beyond the 300$ mark. Too much money for me :(

I'd guess around $90. Still too much. I like the variety of the Pocket Editions. I'll keep watching and maybe someday...
I actually have a two, but they are not in nearly as good shape, and they are not these highly worked designs.

Bingo! THAT'S the part I love :) One sees that on ebay every now and again.

My guess would be it has to do with the way they were manufactured. I can imagine that the machine needed some parallel surfaces to insure a good hold. Were these cast or machined?

Way back, after seeing this a bunch on ebay, I tired it with an old blade. It doesn't work at all. The edge get pushed into the hooks of the comb. The blade is not held securely since it's not sandwiched between the surfaces. And the handle only turns a couple of times before bottoming out on the platform. If one tightens it too much it could bend or crack the platform.
OTOH, when you see it on ebay, it's a good indication of how much the seller knows about the item :)
