No, it's not a lawsuit :D

I need to replace my styptic stick however I don't like what I have. I've been using the Clubman styptic and it gets rough once it gets wet. I know that some people use alum blocks so I'm curious as to what y'all might recommend for stopping bleeding of minor cuts and nicks.

Good question. I've never used one but I've heard differing reports.

I have never used alum but I hear it does sting a little if the shave is not up to par or there is irritation. I use a styptic but rarely, rarely ever since I started shaving with a straight razor.

I assume that is because you must resort to turnicuts ? ;)

Alum doesn't stop bleeding. It's more of an antiseptic. It will sting on areas where you may have given yourself razor burn.

Lots of people recommend My Nik is Sealed as a convenient styptic, though I've never used it.

Bob,

Customer reviews on the link sing it's praises. I might try it. Thanks.

I use an alum block after every shave. It helps with many nicks that you might entail. It can sting a bit on your face in general after shaving to close so to speak without any visible cuts being visible. It does preform as an antiseptic technique.

What about without the invisible cuts being visible? Or without the visible cuts being invisible? :rofl

Try the alum block. I use it almost every time I shave. They last along time and stay smooth. If your shave is close it will sting a bit.... but I think like it...:rofl

I use an alum block, but rarely. Lately if I nick myself, i rub a wet q-tip on the Alum block and use that to stop the bleeding. It works pretty good.

A barber i met used styptic powder on a q-tip to stop bleeding, and an alum block if there was no bleeding. Health and safety!!!!!

Try a stiptic powder or liquid on a q-tip

And. As for the original question:

Bourbon !

But seriously, folks ....
I dont own either a stiptik nor an alum block.
If I really jack up my face, some extra AS and ASB usually does the trick

I have used styptics but hated the white residue so I bought a "Father's love" alum and use that one whenever I get a nick. Works mighty fine and I won't try anything else any more ;)

used both, I don't like white residue, so I prefer alum. You can probably get it cheap locally. Actually GNC carries it for cheap, but it is sold as a deodorant. This is the same stuff though

So, in addition to GNC, where would be a good place to order an alum block? What would be a reasonable amount to spend on one?

Lee's Razors sells Trumper's Alum Block, it is a pretty big block at 110g for around 15 bucks.

http://www.shavex.com/e-shop.htm - they're supposed to be a reliable company, and their 250g-offer should last you "a while" :D

Alum for pleasure, My Nik Is Sealed for nicks. Neither stings to any great degree. If you get an alum block, go for potash (potassium) alum, rather than ammonium alum---the later stings more. You can use one of the crystal deodorants, which sometimes are cheaper, but make sure you get potash alum when you do. One guy checked various brands at his local store and found only one brand (of several) that was potash alum.

My Nik Is Sealed is great: it's a liquid, and uses a little roll-on applicator. I've mostly had to use it when I try a blade that's "touchy" for me: very sharp, but inclined toward spontaneous nicks. Two that work that way for me: Feather and Tiger. Very sharp, but unpredictable. YMMV

I use Alum Block for pleasure and light weepers. My Nik is Sealed for anything more serious.
