Jenna takes liquid Valium(Diazepam) for spasticity. She has been on this for over a year, and I have to give it to her in a baby bottle, with Carnation Instant Breakfast. Well, I would really like to wean her off the bottles, as she is almost 4 years old now. The thing is Valium tastes absolutely nasty, and she won't take it straight.

So, I was thinking of flavoring it with Peppermint, as the smell of Valium reminds me slightly of peppermint, and peppermint is a strong flavor, which I'm sure will be the best thing for covering the taste of the medicine.

Does anyone know anything about flavoring medicines?

Rest assured I'm not going to do anything without asking her doctor first.

But I'd like to know a little something on the matter first. I'm googling it, and all, but there is so much stuff out there.

I'm not talking EO, like what I use in my soaps and creams, btw. Flavoring Oil, FDA approved.

Thanks all!

You can get flavoring oil at the drug store....I know they have grape and cherry. I have a sample of a chocolate flavoring oil here.

Thanks guys.

I already picked up Peppermint Flavoring Oil, before I posted this thread. Was just wondering if anyone had some info.

I've tried different beverages to conceal the taste before, nothing works. This stuff is really nasty! I've tasted it.

I will call my brother later, he is a pharmacist.

How about mixing it with peanut butter? Works for my dog when she needs meds she doesn't like. Otoh, if this is a daily thing, that's probably not a good idea.

Cool! Thanks, Issy!

This is a twice a day thing actually.

I'll send you a PB Valium ball, and you tell me how it tastes. I truly doubt you'll like it.

But thanks for playing. :)

Umm, isn't that illegal or something? And anyway, I believe you.

Just have your pharmacist mix in flavoring. I know at the walgreens back home they had like a 20 flavor selection thing on kids meds.

I'll look into that when I get her next refill, but right now I have two bottles of Valium to get through unflavored.

If you get it filled there..take it back and say you need the sweet stuff...

I would go easy on the ingestion of peppermint oil......it can and will most likely relax the sphincter between the stomach and esophagus, allowing stomach acids to flow back into the esophagus. (The sphincter is the muscle that separates the esophagus from the stomach.) By relaxing the sphincter, peppermint can cause heartburn and indigestion (but it will depend on the individual and how much is ingested)

I would imagine repeated use would raise the chance of this happening.

I see a listing of flavorings in my pharmacy. I take a LOT of prescription meds so I have a relationship, now, with my pharmacist. I'm sure that you can get the proper amount of a flavoring to match the amounts in the bottles.
I'd try two flavorings just to have a fall back flavor. Plus who wants the same stuff twice a day? NOT me...

I'll ask my pharmacist for more detailed info on Monday

Issy share the info with us, that isn't personal, so we can have an idea if/when it crops up in our lives

If its a FDA approved flavoring oil and concentrated so it delutes VERY little its not a problem (If it was a BIG batch you would need more flavoring oil and would have to adjust the med accordingly.

I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

I'll give an update once I do try it.
