Some of you may have heard about the server problems at one of the other shaving forums. Before I say anything else I want to say this... I sincerely hope things work out okay for them. I certainly understand the pains that can happen in the world of hosting, and forum administration. We spend a lot of time making these places great. When problems happen they really hurt.
On that note, i've had a couple users pm me asking what we do for backing up the data on our server. For starters we have our storage drives set in a raid formation. Essentially this means every piece of data is held on more than one drive. Even with that, things can and will happen. Every night the entire server is backed up. There is one copy held on our server, and another copy held on a remote server, which happens to be the first server and host TSD operated on. We outgrew that server long ago, but it's more than enough to hold our backups. Finally, once weekly, I download the most current backup to one of my personal computers.
I had a very close call with the forum about 2 months in, and i've been a bit paranoid since. In a nutshell, for data loss, it would require the failure of 3 machines at the same time, all of which are located in different states, and controlled by different people.

Sounds like you have it about as covered as is possible.
Thanks for sharing that with us all. Even if I don't fully comprehend the nerd-speak.

And no, TSD is not hosted from a "shared server", unless you wanna count the couple sites that WE host.

That's a good system. Thanks for putting all that effort into it.

I know, from personal experience, that you can't have too many backups! Thanks for letting us know, makes it easier to sleep at night (for you too I reckon ;) )

Isn't that the truth. I have an external drive that runs differential backups once a day for the business and full backups once a week. I also run a backup to DVD once a month for data files and email files I store off site. If we have a fire or other emergency, I can just grab the external drive and go.
Which reminds me, I need to start scanning copies of all my legal documents to files.

Ya gotta try, but even with the best laid plans..... Let's just says it's pretty unlikely.

We run Raid 10, a combination of the two.

Ya never know. Sometimes us nerdy types are forced to dig up equipment from the basement. I think it's next to the brief case sized hard drive.
I really gotta throw some stuff out. :ashamed001

I haven't got any 8" drives, but a couple of 5.25" and 3.5" ones. MFM/RLL HDD? Yup, that too! :p Full length MCA ethernet card (with RG58 and AUI connectors, of course!) ;)
Got tons of stuff that has no use anymore... EISA SCSI cards... tape controllers... geez.. I need to have a clean out too. I guess the best thing would be to throw a handgranade in the office and close the door, and the sweep up the dust, would save me loads of work :D
Just print everything out on paper. That's good, solid backup! :P

Wow.... I could only imagine having to implement one of those backups... Gives me headaches thinking about it.

I could make it worse.
Let's imagine you did back it up like that... near an open window.. all of a sudden the wind BLOWS all the paper out of order and onto the floor. :D

No we are not talking about bug spray. This is a bit of technospeak here.

Actually, I am pretty darn sure Isaac was talking bug spray!

It may have just been a joke, but there is no need for you to talk down to anyone! You are not the only person with knowledge of techno-speak and such things.
I know this thread, for the most part, is techno-speak.
