I've got a bunch of shaving stuff in my cabinet that for various reasons I never use. I could sell it, but it's not all that valuable. I bet we all have stuff like this. As it happens, my unwanted stuff fits nicely in one of those 7x7x6 flat rate USPS priority mail boxes.
So here's my proposition. I send this box to someone. That person takes what he or she wants and replaces it with something unwanted from his or her collection. Swap out as much or as little as desired, as long as the number of items in the box remains roughly constant. Ship the box to the next person on the list.
Who's in?
Please PM your address to the person above you on the list.

Great idea - but I live in Sweden :sad029
Sometimes I really, really wanna live in the US..
We could see how many people in Europe would be interested. We don't have those handy cheapo flat-rate boxes, but if there are a few people interested we could see what we can work out...

01-07-2008, 08:16 AM
A similar system in Europe? This would also be very interesting ::
peacefrog
01-07-2008, 10:21 AM
Before I launched this idea, I struggled with what to do about our European friends. In the end, I basically gave up and decided to see what the emerging consensus ended up being. My box weighs about 3.5 pounds and cost me $8+ to ship priority mail. I wonder how much it would cost someone to ship it to Europe?
I suppose there are a couple of possibilities. Our European members could launch their own revolving grab bag. Or someone in the US could volunteer to ship it overseas where it could tour Europe, then someone there could ship it back over here. I suppose that would incur additional cost on a couple of people, but it might be nice to have the thing travel the globe.
peacefrog
01-07-2008, 10:23 AM
The grab bag is en route to JoAnna via USPS Priority Mail.
I won't disclose the contents so as not to spoil any sort of surprise, but I did take a "before" photo. It might be fun for Doc Mottern to take an "after" photo when it reaches him, and we can post both pictures.
I'd be interested either way.
If it'll become a global bag it'd definitely be a good idea to have it stay in Europe a while, both to save shipping but also to avoid having the thing in transit all the time (between Europe and the US usually takes about two weeks. Sometimes just one, sometimes three or even four).
mastermute
01-07-2008, 10:54 AM
It would probably be cheaper to buy whatever one may find in the box, but I'd interested in a European Edition too.. just for the fun of it!

I just came from the post office and its a complete mess their rates dont match the online rates the post office displays on the website. it gets worse every year here.
Id say if you wanna do this idea for Europe stick to a 0-2Kg Box. that way postage would be around 11,05 € for priority according to the latest sheet I brought with me. offcourse this is then not insured I dont think you would wanna go there. also this rate would differ from Country to Country this is the rate from Holland to elsewhere inside europe

It's in a flat rate box. The box you used Bob wasn't a flat rate but you spent the same price as a flat rate.
I have lots of boxes from USPS, so I changed it over to a flat rate box. Which provided more room, btw.
Even if Isaac takes nothing out, he could probably fit a few more things in.

Well, I had a picture on my laptop, but today that computer decided to go kaput. I'm not sure if I'll ever recover that picture, so here, as far as I can remember, are the original contents:
A razor I picked up in Torino, Italy when I first started shaving.
Saint Charles Shave Bay Rum with a Twist cologne, used a few times.
Saint Charles Shave Bay Rum aftershave balm, about 3/4 full.
Pinaud Bay Rum aftershave, used a few times.
A tube of Proraso, about 2/3 full.
A tub of Proraso (also purchased in Torino, I think), about 2/3 full.
Some vegetable glycerine.
OSMA shave soap, purchased in Paris, used two or three times.
Lil' Suzy olive oil soap, lavender I think, still in the plastic wrapping.
Sample size of British Sterling aftershave, used once or twice.
Sample of a couple of hand lotions.
Did I forget anything JoAnna?

I have been in communication with Michael. As of today he has not received the box. I know it was delayed by my illness and work. Nevertheless, he should have received by now. I apologize. At this stage I believe it is lost.
Here is the good news: Andrew, Mike and I have put together a new box with lots of good stuff that will go out Monday. It will continue on its regular course as listed in the thread. The only difference is that those that had it before I did will go to the bottom of list so as to give them a chance to get the new box. Then onto Will as the last stop. I believe this to be as fair as it can be at this stage. I want to thank Mike and Andrew for their help with the new box.
So Michael your are next my friend!!!!

Well, another USPS delivery today and still nothin' from them ole boys in the Lone Star state. My assumption, as Raf's, is that it fell off the back of a truck somewhere, never to be seen again. Should have been here long before now.
It was a nice idea though and hopefully, thanks to Raf, Mike and Andrew, we'll be able to get it back on track. Raf, you did say that Andrew was sending the B&B rebristle in the new box, right? :D
If the original box ever does show up, well, I guess we'll just have two going. Thanks, guys!

Enough room for a few packs of blades and a couple EdT samples. :D I'm sure you could cram more in there, but there really wasn't a lot of room left. Six tubs of soap/cream and a bottle of Proraso ASB take up space, ya know? "Lots of stuffs" ain't gonna happen (unless, of course, you take lots of stuffs out).
However, the 7lbs 3.8oz flat rate box cost me $8.95 to ship. If it had not been a flat rate box, would have been $7.75 (or something like that). Postal clerk said she couldn't charge me the lower rate as long as it was in a flat rate box. So perhaps a larger box is in order. I'm sure whoever doesn't have room will figure something out. :)

Seems like the same could possible done with Europe.
I think it would be neat if the box were to pass through the US, Canada, and Europe in such a way that everyone got to sample a bit of shave from foreign lands. Though with that the complexity of the pass would increase exponentially.

This is what I'm passing onward
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/TOB9595/ShavingNRazor/IMGP0711.jpg
Here's what I'm taking. I was a soap shaver but I want to give these creams a spin. I took the blade safe because it was empty space in the box. I couldn't get anything in to it so out it came.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/TOB9595/ShavingNRazor/IMGP0717.jpg
Here's what I'm putting in. Some creams that I like.
TSD Bay Rum. With the TSD Bay Rum is Bay Rum Cologne. Highly rated for the Bay rummers out there. I'm one of them :)
I like scents so I put in Lagerfeld CLassic AS and EDT. This is wonderful scent and selection.
One of my fav of all time is Paloma Picasso's Minotaur. Soap, EDT and ASB. This is really great stuff. I like the scented soap, shower gels, shampoos, you know; stuff to keep the scent as propogated as can be...
eShave ASB, the eShave stuff is as good as it gets. Before I tried eShave I thought it was some hyped, yuppie, stuff. I started to read reviews on this so I got some. Try all/any eShave stuff you can get.
Method Blog shave cream, this is well reviewed. I think it's good, not spectacular.
A really cool lather bowl. I used one of these till I got the Georgetown Scuttle.
Royall Lemon Soap in the shape and scent of Lemon. I have one in the tub even now. I like the scent and soapibility of this. I got the most lemon scent AFTER I started to use it. VERY nice. Typical Royall strong and accurate scent.
Brut cologne. Not my taste but I know many folk like this.
Proraso isn't in there. I didn't have room... :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/TOB9595/ShavingNRazor/IMGP0718.jpg
Here it is all boxed up. I tried to get it solid...I think it's packed well.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/TOB9595/ShavingNRazor/IMGP0721.jpg
I hope and trust that any contagion in the box is dead by now. I felt like I was dying ...

EDIT:
I got a look through the goody box. I won't post all sorts of pics because Tom gave out a good indication of what was in there. But here is what I took out:
1353
The WARS and the classic lime are still in the box--I just took a small sample to try of each.
And here is what I put in:
1352
A few notes here--the straight is a "shorty" Wostenholm IXL that is really meant for honing practice. I got it in a batch/lot of straights off Ebay and I cleaned it up good with MAAS and a Dremel, but I didn't hone it. I'll leave that to whoever wants to play with it.
Other: MB Beau Brummel soap, Honeybee Spa Dragon's Blood and Sandalwood soaps, Old Spice High Endurance balm, Proraso cream and Van Der Hagen soap, 3 Merkur blades and the str8.

USPS now has a LARGE flat rate box. If it fits, it ships, but it must use their box. Next person in line, please consider it for a shipping option, it might save you a good bit of cash. You will have to pick up the box and repack it, but the new box is free.

I'm new to the forum, but I'd love to join in on the box. This looks like a great deal of fun.

Whats the rule upon arrival ? More in than out? Equal in Equal out ? Take samples more in ?
The rule is to be fair. If someone takes a bunch of expensive items and puts in a sample of a cream...not fair. Fair is define by you, honor and gentleman code. enjoy.
Always think about the next guy.

It will be at least 4 months probably till your name comes up, but if you're in it for the long haul, I believe no one will object to adding your name to the list. :happy088

Not at all - I am still new to this so I just want to understand what is expected and what is not expected. You will have to get up much earlier to hurt my feelings. Besides, I still plan to come out to LA drink wine, eat flesh and show you fly fishing !!!

Hey guys, I thought that after cuthroat trout we were goin to start the list over for those that still want in.
The Lone Star and I spoke up before about it. I think some others too.
Least I was serious about it.:)

There's no problem with sending it around for a second pass, but I don't see why new people can't get in.
Just my thoughts, and if enough people feel differently, then we can go with the majority by all means.

Agreed. Seems to me that when people stop asking to be added, THEN we can start around again.
And who's The Lone Star?

Of course there's no problem. My bad for presenting it that way.
I do just want to verify that I was sincere about going for round two.
I suspect the other guys were also.
:)
So do we slip in for a revolve after Automaton - Tim?
Or is it best to put the future requesters in first then slip the 2ndgorounders in?

What's the time limit for the stop asking clock? If no one asks for one month or four months? I think I remember that someone figured it would be ~ 4 months for A-T to get his turn..add another month for contingency delays...
Lone Star..... State. Sorry for confusing you and others.

Several things to consider. With as many members as we have, there are bound to be others who "discover" this and want in. Also, there have been several non-CONUS folks who expressed interest. At some point, it'll get sent to Canada and/or overseas. I see no reason to send it to people who have already had it until all of that is done...if it ever IS done.
