View Full Version : TSD's revolving grab bag

Sorry guys....I'm a bit confused on who is running the grab bag behind the scenes. Since the initial one was lost, it's kinda been all over the place, and i'm trying to get it worked out. I removed a few of the posts pertaining to this, as I didn't think I should let it the clutter the thread. Continue on....

OK, somehow I just missed like two weeks or something. And I thought I was subscribed to this thread so I'd get emails when people respond. Anyway, thanks to those who covered for me and added names to the list.
Here are a few of my thoughts... I'd like to see this thing keep going until we get to the bottom of the list, then send it around the world and back through the list again. As far as rules about trading, as someone pointed out, let your conscience be your guide. But for the love of god, TAKE SOME STUFF OUT OF THAT ENORMOUS BOX!!

I will take it home and give it look through and add my items. I have something very special I am adding.
I will send out by the end of the week.
Note: It was in a Priority Mail large flat rate box.
I received it today in New Jersey. Rick sent it from California on Friday. Rick has been teriffic.
Can't beat that for $12.95.
The box smells good, I hope nothing is broken. (Just checked inside, everything seems OK. It is pretty full.)
I'll let you know when it has been shipped.

I've always noticed my shipping boxes, storing boxes, and shaving areas reek of awesome, even if everything is fully sealed and unbroken. Its like shaving gear just oozes good smelling out of its pores.

Hello Everyone,
I was just looking back through this topic. The items in this box sure have changed from the early reports.
That is not in a bad way or anything, just alot more and different items.
Now I have added a nice shiney, chrome, German metal object, among other things.
I also noticed a nice Gold colored metal object in there.
This thing is really fun, and an adventure of discovery. I will be sealing it up and sending it out to Matt in California.
I will advise when sent.

:D.
According to the tracking it should be here on Saturday. I'll be sure to take photos of it, whats removed, and what goes back in.
*EDIT*
It has arrived as of Saturday afternoon, and is a semi-massive honking brick of shaving goodness. It's been pawed through and oogled at, some some taken and some stuff left. I'll be throwing up a photo of what it looked like upon arrival, and upon departure.
Departure should be later this week, depending on if I have to run it down to the post office, or can make them pick it up.
AAAAH The suspense is killing me! ;) I can't wait to see my wife's reaction when she thinks I bought a big box packed with shave stuff...

Slight delay, gentlemens. Finals did a number with beating me about the head and ears, and USPS killed my account with them.
This means I'll have to run it by the post office, and the earliest that will be will be Monday. I'll try my best to have the box back in circulation by then, well on its way to rodd.

and I am pretty sure it is going to get to me just when I am in the hospital for my son's birth... Timing is all wrong on this box! ;) I have some stuff set aside to go in to the box, and I ship out from my grocery store, so I should be able to keep it moving, even if I am not sleeping...

The madness is officially on its way to Rodd via priority mail. Should show up there promptish.
I'll do an edit of this post mañana with photographic evidence of the shaving insanity.
I got the box about 20 minutes ago. I made my moves, and it will ship when I get off work. Lots of goodies. I did not have time to take pictures, but once Matt posts them, it will be the same with these changes
I took out:
Susies Bubbles Orange body soap
A Merkur classic - unbelievable timing, I almost ordered one
A couple random blades I have not tried yet
I put in:
Tube of Art of Shaving Lavender - used 5 times, I decided I am not a floral guy
Full bottle of Old Spice Musk- Opened it, sniffed it, wished I sniffed it in the store
2 of my melt and pour soaps in my wife's make up containers one in cool water FO, and Lavender Tea Tree EO. (both contain Bentonite)
A tub of Mama Bear Eucaliptus Oil soap, hardly used
R3 flare tip Superspeed
Gem Micromatic (gold) with a couple Ted Pella blades
Gillette Ball end New
Eagle Improved single edge razor. Very unique and neat, but I don't use it.
2 bars of bee and flower sandalwood soap
And I swapped the Gillette New for another one.
If there is room, I decided I am going to try to pack in a bottle of Mama Bear EDT also, we will see, it is pretty packed.
Thanks to all involved with this, it is fun!

If it's "too heavy" it could be split, and half the package goes to EU for a tour. I know I have at least 2 members withing an hours drive (opposite directions, ofcourse ;) ). Customs can be a bugger, but it's all in the declaration, "Shaving samples - no commercial value" and a goods value of $20 would probably do it to get it into EU :p

a) I don't wanna pay the customs charges or hassle for customs clearance
b) how heavy is the package now? Inter-European shipping can go up as high as 30-40€ (45-60USD) depending on the weight.
What do you say, guys?
Who is responsible for customs charges, sender or recipient? And is it just a one-time charge to get it into the EU, or will there be multiple such charges?

Yup!

Once inside EU there shouldn't be any charges for the EU area. EU isn't all of Europe, yet, though. I'm willing to "take the risk" for the customs, if only the declaration is worded something like I mentioned above I don't expect any problems...

I tried to put in as much as I took out, and even re-packed some things to make it fit. (I did toss the shaving brush box, the brush is still in the grab bag). The pictures are a bit blurry, sorry about that. what I put in was:
Lucky Tiger hair tonic,
Lone Star moustache wax,
Proraso shaving cream 95+% left (have another tube),
Nivea after shave balm 80- 90% left,
Old Spice original scent after shave (new),
Black Suede cologne (new),
Personna Double Edge blades -two unopened packages
unopened shaving pucks from a local barber supply -two of them, one for sensitive skin,
unscented shaving soap pucks - two of these also(smells like lye soap), both unused with one in the original packaging,
three Gillette shaving samples,
one Wilkinson sword blue ufo shaving soap-horrid horrid stuff - received this in a multi-soap purchase some time back.
one nick stop shaving powder (stops bleeding)
one Murray's Pomade - new can
What I took out:
Lucky Tiger a/s
Olive Oil soap
Murray's Pomade
Clubman talc
Clubman travel set
VDH soap
VDH shaving bowl
Clubman shaving cream
pre-shave lotion (leaking)
Every Man Jack post shave lotion

The Okie Eagle 2 has left the nest on its way to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, home of hoglahoo. I repacked the contents in a USPS Large Flat Rate Box with all items in zip-lock bags. It is almost full (some foam pop-corns in the bottom) and it weighs 8 ib. 13.2 oz. The box can be shipped International with a 20# limit.
I removed the following items;
• 21 assorted DE blades
• 1 tub of Wilkinson soap
• 1 bottle of Nivea after shave Cooling Balm
I added the following items:
• 1 1962 Gillette Slim

• 1 puck "Aloe Vera" shaving soap Red Dirt Soap Co. Bartlesville, OK

They all have had booths at MayFair, a local festival. I prefer QED, SCS and C&E soaps and creams, but I like to use them for a change of pace, particularly since they are a "local" product. If you find one of their soaps online that you would like to try, I have PP account and we can probably work something out. Thanks Sam! That was fast. Well, I don't want to itemize anything because there's way too much stuff in this box. I had to repack it four times and remove a few packing peanuts to get the box closed.
I don't know what the stuff I took is worth or who wanted what, but I did take photos so the following recipients can salivate a little. I didn't take the quattro...
Let me explain what you are looking at: Everything on the table is what was in the box when it arrived. Everything sitting on the box is what I added, and everything in the little corner separated by the lincoln log roof piece is what I removed for myself. I've never used a double edged razor blade to shave with and am anxious now to try. Tomorrow morning I will know what I think, and if I hate it I guess I'll reopen the box and throw the handles and blades back in there. I took one of each variety of blade I found in the box and I took two handles.
The stuff I put in is mostly smelly (aftershaves, soap, etc), but I did find a new cheapo Timber Wolf straight razor I bought on eBay months ago and I was actually able to put a shaving edge on it. It probably won't last, and it isn't the most comfortable thing in the world, but there it is. It's brand new and I've oiled it to keep it free of moisture. And I just remembered that wasn't in the photo I took because I thought of it later. So the last photo of this post is of that razor. I'll throw in the pirate decal too for good measure. Also, there's an old straight razor that I left in the box which has a big chip missing out of the blade. I don't recommend touching that razor even if you just had a tetanus shot (that's just the safety in me talking). Anyway, less talk more photos. Click the picture to link to the original, larger file for better detail:

Someone needs to soon take at least one or two heavy items, the shipping charge was $12.95 1st class, and I don't think a box that size will suffer anymore surplus
It's gained in weight since it left my house. I don't remember exactly the weight, but it cost 10.95 from Chouteau to Norman OK.
is it no longer in a flat rate box? That apparently is a good thing, I think it was just under $14 for me to send the flat rate box.

If you zoom in on the box in the photo here, you can see the box says "Large Flat Rate Box For Domestic and International Use" http://anwealde.com/razors/2008-07-24--21.19.00/00025.jpg
If you bought insurance then that is probably why it was $1 more. The recipient following me requested no insurance, but I probably should have bought it anyway

OK, I received the box today. There's a ton of stuff in there. The plan is to ship it from here over to Europe. I'll go through the thread and add names, etc later this evening after my 14-month-olds get put to bed. I'm a little behind the game because of vacation, then getting caught up, etc.

Yep, Bob and his wife adopted twins a few months ago. Pics (http://www.theshaveden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3821) in this thread.

They're doing amazingly well. They were severely malnourished during their first two months of life, but they're as healthy as can be now. The vacation we just got back from was five days of camping at a music festival, and they had an absolute blast!

I think I'm going to pull all the after shaves and colognes out of the box before I send it to Europe. One of them broke open on its way to me and made a little bit of a mess. Plus they add a lot of weight. And there's also the issue of shipping alcohol. I'll put in a few interesting, lighter-weight things.
I'd post pictures, but my camera was stolen during our vacation.

You camera was stolen at a music festival?! Not much peace and love there. They are getting cheaper so here is hoping that you get another soon.

Yeah, there seemed to be a couple bad apples there this year...like two out of approx 15k people. But this was rather a special case. Here's the long story...
On the last day of the festival, a thunderstorm rolled in. We'd had several throughout the festival, so we're used to it. There's no really safe place to be, so we went under one of the big festival tents, in this case the kids activity tent. The storm turned really wicked, about the worst I've ever seen. We huddled all the kids in the middle of this tent while all us adults held down the poles along the perimeter. I was pushing against my pole with all my strength (along with two other people on this pole) to hold it against the wind. During a lull in the storm, they told us that most of the other tents on the site had collapsed, that another stronger storm was coming, and that we should all get out. So we left all our gear, went to my mother-in-law's nearby house (30 minutes away) for the night, and came back Monday morning. We later learned that there were 70 mph winds, golf ball-sized hail, and a tornado that luckily didn't touch down. It was a calculated risk to leave our stuff, but it was feeling like a matter of life and death at the time, so my only priority was getting my family out of there.

We've actually got some leads on the thief. Festival organizers have been notified, and they're passing the info on to the local police. We're out about $700 worth of stuff. I can understand swiping a camera, but this guy actually stole a double jogging stroller!

Probably had to use the stroller to cart away his loot.

No on all counts. I'll get the box out within the next couple of days. The thief is still at large and will almost certainly get away clean. A new camera is not in my budget this half of the month. I plan to replace it with the same model (Canon PowerShot SX100IS) in a week or so.
Big thanks to whoever put those Floris samples in the grab bag. I hadn't had the pleasure of using it before, and it's top-shelf stuff.

So, is the package on its way yet? How many of the ASLs did get killed in the process? I was just wondering, because if the Pinaud/Ogallala stuff would "survive" I'd love to swap one or two of these bottles (just about the only stuff I'd like as far as I can tell from the older pictures). I'm just being curious here :D

Hello.
Just wondering if your daughters are ok and if we are going to "see" you again on the boards.
Lots of people are worried about you and your family. The grab bag would be nice to start again, but we want to make sure that you are ok.
