Hello all,
I am new to Wet Shaving and using a DE razor. I just bought a Merkur Futur with Merkur SS blades. Silver tipped brush and some soap and cream. I am still waiting for it to come in and looking forward to learning the technique of using this razor. Hopefully it will better that using Mach 3 or Fusion systems. The high cost or cartridges is just killing me.

Uh oh, someone send this man a blade sampler quick!
Most people don't care much for Merkur blades. But you might get along with them just fine.
What kind of soap and cream did you get?
Welcome to the Shave Den, Fairlite!
Got questions, don't be afraid to ask!

Uh oh. You will have to be very careful around here, my friend. The cost of cartridges doesn't hold a candle to the costs of some of the things you are about to be tempted with! $200+ brushes, $100+ DE razors, $500 straights, $60 soaps...the list goes on. The blades are cheap though! :D
If you're interested in some excellent soaps that ARE affordably priced ($6 ea, soon to be $7), I highly recommend the TSD store. Awesome stuff!! Actually, I can't say that from personal experience with ALL of them...I only have eleven! :ashamed001 See what I mean about temptation?
Anyway, welcome to The Shave Den, Fairlite. Nice bunch of folks here. Good luck with your new stuff!

Welcome fairlite, don't let them frighten you. :D You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into... The Shave Den.

Hello, Rod! There are probably only half a dozen of us around here who have a CLUE what you're talking about. Unfortunately, I'm one of 'em!! :D

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call "The Twilight Zone". Just a slight hijack of your thread fairlite, we're really all mostly normal here. Welcome!

Welcome to this friendly place! I'm just a noob too but you'll find a wealth of information and tips here!
BUT I have to agree with Fergie... The high cost of cartridges is nothing once you get bitten by the wetshave bug :D ... So never, ever, visit ebays section on safety razors (http://collectibles.listings.ebay.com/Shaving_Safety-Razors_W0QQdfspZ1QQfromZR4QQsacatZ35989QQsocmdZLis tingItemList) ;)
mantic has a great set of instructional videos on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/shavetutor) that's waht brought me here in the first place!

Hi there,
First, welcome to this place. You'll find other shaving forums to peruse besides this one, each with a different feeling to it. Of the three forums I frequent, I personally happen to prefer the 'vibes' here.
You know, you're already ahead in the DE learning curve, since you already 'wet shave' with your cartridges. You already know the feeling of a blade slicing through lather.
JoAnna was smart to quickly mention other blades besides Merkur when starting out. Lots of people enjoy them, but most don't. You may not believe this now, but finding the correct blade for your face is CRUCIAL in achieving a painless, BBS shave. Ok, I'll put "In my opinion", but that's the deal with almost everyone who shaves. Read about the different blade varieties, and the members experiences with them. You'll soon see a pattern that will help guide your selections of blades to try.
Now........Fergie? You are SO sarcastic. Just tell the guy that all he needs to do is find the right blades, right razor, right soaps or creams, right brush and that's the end of the buying needed items. He's just trying to scare you, Fairlite.. Yeah, that should be all you'd need, UNLESS you really start to buy into this whole shaving 'hobby'. Then it can get a little pricey (chuckling nervously to myself). But of course, that hardly ever happens.
Michael was right though about trying some of JoAnna's soaps. I have had excellent luck with her products, and she would be among the 3-4 vendors I'd suggest sampling from. I can't speak for her creams, but I quite enjoy her soaps.
Anyway, good luck on your journey, and I hope you become an ' enthusiastic hobbyist' like many others here.

I bought Taylor of Old Bond Street Hypo Shave Cream
and a Citrus Scuttle soap, but it think I mad a mistake with the soap. I bought without know ing and I do not have a Scuttle. I will see what I can do with it though and I will be buying the the correct kind. I think I will be buying aged spice from one of the websites I saw on here. What an amazing resource this forum is. I found almost all my answers just searching and reading.
It is nice to see a place with so many help friendly people.
Lets hope my first shave goes well. I am looking forward to it.

Oh yeah.

Not used to having so many people actually caring that some one new has joined a forum. Never mind being nice. I think this is a place I am really going to enjoy.

Pete:
no need for a scuttle......yet ;)
Just put the puck in your hand and load your warm, damp brush with soap.
Set down the brush and take the preLather from the puck and rub it into your face with your fingers (You can pretty much dry up the puck this way) and then put the puck into a container. Could be a baggie....doesnt matter really.
Then take your loaded brush directly to your face and build the lather there. Add warm water to the breech of the brush until you get the consistency you are looking for.
There'll be plenty of time later for a scuttle and other AD's that will sink their teeth into ya :D

I just dump them into the cheapest smallest throwaway lidded plastic containers I can get at Wal-mart. It works for both storing and making lather. I think I got like 12 of them for $4 or less. I use a Sharpie or permanent marker on the outside to remind me what it is. I like messy when I have one of The Gentlemen's Quarter sample soaps. Rub the sample of my face and lather on my face or make the lather in my hand.
