View Full Version : Hand American sharpening system
Is there a user's review of this system somewhere? Or if you use this method, do you recommend it?

I know Neale has one......Said it was Great.
Im debating getting one myself.
It is the best sharpening system there is... the cat's meow... and cheaper than a set of stones, for sure. Stones can be more convenient, especially for touch-ups, but not for a dull razor.
Do it...
Keith makes great strops as well.
Thanks for the input. This system offers the following grit sizes,
Chromium Oxide Liquid 0.5 micron 4 ounce container
Boron Carbide Liquid 1 micron 4 ounce container
Boron Carbide Liquid 1.5 micron 4 ounce container
Which one(s) do you recommend? I have bought shave ready razors and eventually will need to do my own sharpening/refresh of these razors. Initially I thought about getting a Norton 4k/8k but if If can do fine with this system, I won't.
Also, I guess I can use other pastes from other sources to use with this system?

Thanks, it looks like my cheapest way out for now is to buy the paper and mount it on glass.

If you are happy with your razors as they shave now. It is pretty easy to keep them really keen by using regular Dovo or TI pastes on a linen or even the reverse side of a leather strop. A lot of str8 guys snag a barbers hone (Franz Swarty is a favorite) off of eBay or from Tilly at http://www.redtrader99.com/hones.html this will keep you in shape for a very long time.
Has anyone attempted to contact Hand American recently? I have inquired about their products with an interest to purchase. I have sent 2 e-mails at info@handamerican.com within the last 8 weeks or so and have not received a reply. I haven't tried to call. My questions are newbie type and I felt would be better answered through e-mail.

What he said, I would just give Keith a call tomorrow Guillermo. He is really cool and very knowledgeable and will not steer you wrong. I have talked with him for hours, he won't try and sell you anything you don't need either.
As was stated a barber hone, pasted strop, bench hone...ect will keep your shave ready razors going a long time. A pasted strop with some Boron Carbide and Chromium Oxide will work great for quick touch ups.
Tell Keith I said Hi! :D

I have the bench Scary Sharp bench hone system....I bought the Chromium oxide and Boron Carbide pastes he used to sell prior to buying the system though so I never bought the liquids.....
I also picked up some Diamond abrasive pastes at:
http://www.tedpella.com/polish.htm#anchor1159330
They are a bit cheaper than whats available elsewhere an work well for me, although the diamond content may be a bit less than Amplex...

I have the scary sharp system and love it. It is the most versitle sharpening system I have ever used.
(heavy work)
Personaly I use 1K grit paper mounted on the glass for ebay razors that need nicks/chips taken out, and to establish a new clean bevel.
(standard honing)
Then I use my Norton 4/8K, but I could just as easily mount 4K or 8K paper on the glass plate just like I do with the 1K.
(final polish)
To put the finishing touches on razors I use 1micron Boron Carbide pasted on a leather pad (stroping motion) then .5micron Chromium Oxide pasted on another leather pad(stroping motion). You can use these same pastes/liquids on honing film mounted on glass if you prefer to use the standard edge leading honing motion instead of spine leading stroping motion. I have not tried the pasted honing film on glass, but all thier other equipment works perfectly. I do not see how this would be any different.
Bottom line the scary sharp system will fit every need, and style if you have the medium to mount on the bench hone. The grip tite paste really holds the paper to the glass well with out being a sticky mess, even when wet. I really can not say enough about it.

Keith has some nice products for sure. The route I took however was slightly different. I bought the combo 4k/8k Norton stone and a DMT diamond hone to flatten the Norton. I then contacted Tony Miller for 2 paddle strops and then treated them with the Boron Carbide and Chromium Oxide paste. This system has worked like a charm for me. There are many ways you can go to maintain your razors. I'm always learning new ways each time I visit a new site such as this.
