View Full Version : Aftershave irritation

I have sensitive skin and find most of the designer aftershave splashes to be rather irritating. My wife likes the smell of Obsession, so she bought me some of the cologne and aftershave. All I can say about the aftershave is . This stuff really smarts and even leaves my face red. So, I am currently only using the cologne and a scent free aftershave balm by John Michael Kohler.

Does anyone else have this problem?

don't use cologne as aftershave- that makes everyone's face red. use a balm if you have sensitive skin.

I never use cologne as aftershave. That really burns and smells too strong. I'm talking about the matching aftershave splash that goes with the cologne.

cut the aftershave with some witchhazel.
You will still get the scent but not all the burn.

Is their any Glycerin/Emollients or is it just Alcohol and Fragrance?

Great advice,

Or simply apply to soaking wet face, and after a few seconds have passed (10-15 or so), rinse the aftershave off with cold water. I actually do this every day.

I see where I may have confused you. When I said I am using the cologne but not the aftershave, what I meant was I am using the cologne as it should be used, as a scent sprayed on a few areas but definitely not on my face.

I'll give that some thought.

This is Calvin Klein Obsession. I don't believe there are any emollients in it, just scent and fire.

I have tried that and it still burns. This is not just a sting like what you get from alcohol, but an actual burn. I use Santa Maria Novella lavender aftershave splash like this a lot and never have a problem. It is mostly the designer stuff, like Obsession, that causes the problem.

Hi Dennis,

I would also suggest the cutting of your aftershave with witch hazel., maybe decant a small amount and start at 50/50... if that is not enough, increase the WH, or reduce the WH content for more "scent" until you find your "Zen"..

You could in effect, get the best of both worlds. Of course, you need to know first if you are OK with witch hazel, though I believe that most gents, including sensitive ones like you and me are. The good news is that of course, WH tends to be cheap enough to experiment.

OTOH, and not meaning to hijack your thread, but I am curious as to which creams and or soaps you use. I posted a thread in the "general" forum requesting that sensitive chaps like us can point out types of cream and soaps that work for them as a place to start looking, or expand our search.. rather than "hit and miss" like we have been doing, costing time, money and of course, irritation.

If I find an aftershave too tough on me, I cut it with witch hazel and sometimes even some aloe gel.
