Well... I have an excuse. This is why I haven't been able to do anything with my razor restorations lately. I gotta get the darn shed built!!! Too much stuff in the garages.

Gotta start somewhere. This is it.

Bill
10-10-2007, 01:48 AM
I can't hardly believe it. I rarely injure myself working with tools anymore. Somehow, today, I managed to get one of those really inconvenient boo boo's. Right behind the nail of my left hand.

I was on the ladder running a 4-inch grinder with sanding attachment on the hip of the gambrel roof. My left hand was below the hip for balance and I was sanding on the hip line above the joint with my right hand. I was extended slightly, but didn't feel the position was unsafe.

The aggressive grit of the disc caught the hip just right as I was making the last sweep to the left. The grinder went over the edge of the joint right over the top of my thumb. I was irritated that I had to stop and clean it up. I knew it would really be a dirt bomb if I did not put something over it. It smarted a bit because I used a toothbrush to clean it up. Soft bristles of course. Then a bit of Neosporin, a swath of gauze and duct tape. Now I'm good to go again.

If you want to see what a half second of a spinning sanding disc on flesh does, go here (http://home.comcast.net/~cherylellis01/forums/IMG_5695.750.jpg). Warning! Don't do it if you get upset looking at injuries.

This project is taking way too long. In my own defense, I've done everything by myself. I still have the rest of the insulation, sheet rock, shelving, and doors to finish... but it is gradually getting there.
781

Oh yeah, and I gotta finish the soffit and ventilation system too. I don't think you can see the skylight that is already in place.
782

There's a reason the studs don't match the rafters... trust me.
783

Heh Heh Heh! I beat the rain. Whoo Hoo.

Awesome House you have there Bill and nice fence around the Yard !

So crazy jealous of those Handymen out there..Jeees you can probably build anything Bill.. darn I want my Japanese Garden.. hmmm... but yA'll
living way too far from my house to help out..

Perhaps we could have Bill as the chairman of Handy work that need to be done have a thread and ask all kinds of Techno questions like what to look out for when building a fence around your garden yaself ?

MAn when your a handyman you got the world in ya pocket I can tell you that my shower leaks I can see it at the ceiling but I cant fix it myself will have to hire a plumber  I re-kit the drains but it appears it must but the pipes under the shower or something so im no way in hell starting to open up tiles myself. so for now im Stuck to sitting in the bathtub and shower that way

Im a pretty good painter so the wood house we live in I paint pretty much myself I watched very closely how the prof. painter did it once and I copied the style but improved it so the house came out better then when he did. saves you easily $2500 !

mucho respect for Bill... you wont get me near that SAW one finger short and forget about Chopin..

Bill
10-15-2007, 03:10 PM
Two different types of insulation????

Don't ask. Anyway, the shed needs insulation because some of the things that will be in there are heat sensitive. Like 600 or so vinyl records. The valley heat can get to 109 in the summers, so you can imaging how hot a shed could get without ventilation or insulation.
786

And, of course, there has to be sheet rock if there is going to be insulation...
787

Good thing all my kids are grown and gone. They may have been begging to live out here. I could see it now. Dad... All I need is a flat panel TV and a phone line. And cable... know what I'm sayin'? It would be like, all cool, dude. I do not miss those days, folks.

Rules vary about what is a shed versus a permanent structure. He didn't pour a foundation. The trick will be if the county assessor or the city building code groups ever get a look at it and then either make him tear it down or file permits after the fact and then asses him back taxes. :D

I could build up to 120 square feet... mine is 96
It could be 12 foot high... mine is 10
It had to be 5 feet away from all fencing or other structures... the two closest corners are 5.5 feet awaySee? Nice and conservative...

Bill,

Two things. Don't you need a vapor barrier? And, please, don't store the vinyl in the shed.

St. CroixHmm. Thought about that, too. Since the shed is raised, I didn't think it is really necessary. Secondarily, I used fine-mesh weed barrier with a thin layer of sand to hold it down. You can see it in the second picture that I posted. The records fill at least seven boxes. Takes up too much room in the house. It's temporary until I can sell them on eBay, anyway.

RafIt's a Werner knock-off at about half the price... and it's great. Nothing like using a quality ladder.

I'll get some more pics soon. I got the doors hung today and the trim for them put in place. I also discovered something about paneled doors...

... there's an up, and there's a down. I hung one of them upside down and didn't catch on until I started to hang the hasp hardware. There went an hour down the tubes...

I was just looking at the houses from your backyard, that must be the trend these days everywhere ,housing estates are popping up all over the place, here in Australia , the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast especially .People flock to these areas to enjoy the so called lifestyle , beaches water etc ( nearly 3000 a week now)but a lot don`t get the opportunity because they have to commute to the city for work which is 1 1/2 hrs each way ,I know I did it for 8 yrs down in New South Wales. The kids used to ask Marg ,who was this man they would see occasionally on the weekends. I used to suffer from dreaded commuters disease , no matter where I was when I sat down I was asleep within 10 minuets. Its ok if your retired and own your home ,but when you are beholding to the banks it becomes a vicious circle.

I hope your happy where you are and you get your shed done soon, would be good to see a few pics when its doneWell... Let's see. The couple just west of me broke up right after they moved in. Had been married about 15 years and she decided to not let life pass her by... found a boyfriend. He's not around much. I wind up cutting his grass and pulling his weeds most of the time.

The couple that bought the house directly to the east couldn't move in because the gal started having problems with her pregnancy and had to stay near her doctor. He is a police officer. They rented the house to a college professor who taught criminology. Except they were weird... really weird. Their kids were just as bad. The 4 year-old girl still wasn't potty trained, sucked her thumb, and ran around bare-assed all the time. They wound up moving out, owing the owners 3 months rent. Criminology college professor, remember? The new carpet was ruined from where the girl crapped on it all the time. I haven't met the tenants who just moved in yet. I can hardly wait.

The house directly across from me and to the right has a single 40's mom who lets her large dog come crap in my yard all the time. It stopped when I started picking it up and leaving it on her porch. She don't like me much. Like, I f*&^)%# care.

The people directly across from me are young renters. They are nice enough. They have celebrations/parties all the time where people are always parking in front of my house and leaving trash behind when they leave. Too big of an age difference to be pals, for sure. She's always losing her car keys and having to call someone out get her car running. How does a person lose car keys, anyway? Twice a month?

Across the street and to the left is a family of 6. He complains to me how he is tired of picking up rubbers from his back yard. He bought a german shepherd dog that barks incessantly to know when the boys are sneaking by to get some. Oh, their 14 year-old just had an abortion. After I found out that she and her 12 year-old sister mock my wife because of her nice clothes and professional demeanor, I quit giving the family things that we should have gotten tax deductions for. The last thing I gave them was a TV I paid $650 for two years ago. It needed a $15 part to function properly. They sold it. The twins are about 7 years old. Both of them have rotten teeth from lack of a good diet. No one there eats vegetables. They call my wife, "Stuck up nose lady." Wonder where they got that from? Oh, and their other "pug" dog comes over to do his business in my yard all the time.

The guy across the street and one more house to the west is one who speeds through the neighborhood all the time and plays his rap music so loud, you could hear it a mile away. Seriously... a mile. I politely asked him to slow down and lower his music. He told me, "They have earplugs."

Oh yeah. I'm ready to move.

Oh man... couldnt stop :rofl:rofl:rofl:D

that is bad ! 14 year and ! darn !
Big dog Poopoo's.
then Family from Hell with again poopoo.
Then little girl of 4 who does Poopoo.

Hi Bill,

I have been keeping up with the progress of this thread and have enjoyed the photos as you have proceed.

One question though and it's probably a bit stupid but...........the shape of the roof, what made you go that way with the design of it compared to say a standard pitched roof? As an ex chippie myself I'm just sort of curious.
You are doing a great job of it by the way.

Cheers
John

JohnTwofold... One, I really like the look. And two, it gives me room for a lot more storage.

Got the primer coat of paint on the outside and finished with the joint compound on the inside. I'm getting closer. Then I get to fill it up.

Are you going to texture and paint the sheetrock inside? Maybe a lattice skirt around the bottom  Will birds be able to go into your vent holes in the soffet?

I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the distance between the bottom of the shed and the ground. My primary goal would to discourage any varmints from making that area a home. Don't want any wasps to get any ideas either. Do they nest that low, by the way?

Before watching Fresno State beat San Jose today, I finished painting the inside. Also got the floor done, as well.

Gotta put in some more shelving now
816

Could not have done it without supervision

Can I touch it, Dad? Can I? I didn't have to clean up the small stuff... she ate it.

Hello Bill, nice work. Your bird holes can be filled by going to a hardware store and getting some little screened inserts that will pop in nice and pretty. Got mine from a Truevalue here in Tracy. And you can keep the critters out by making a skirt around the outside with some plywood. Don't forget to back prime it before hanging it! Prime all the edges also, and then paint the edges. Primer ain't water proof.
Now, I'm gonna shut up and get back to work....

Starting to wind down so I can get back to a few razors before making the bookshelves for our computer room. Here is the screen no one could see in the other photos...

The support system I used for the 2 x 3 skeleton shelving above the door.
823

These wound up being much more flimsy than I wanted. But, they will have to do for now.
824

Got to get rid of some of the clutter. These are 9-foot ceilings, by the way.

Thanks, pal, but I’m still envious of Bill’s talent. He can make knives, razors, masonry and carpentry. Usually, people who can do these are also good at plumbing and tinkering with cars.

Great work, Bill! (insert emoticon bowing low)

He'll just fill it with more "stuff." Or maybe if we're lucky, it will be more razor creating/restoring "stuff."

I agree with you, Yukio. When the end of the world comes, Bill's talents will really come in handy. My knowledge of useless trivia, OTOH, will not. :(
