Seems the older I get the more trouble I have with shampoo. I don't have dandruff just a dry "head". Dandruff shampoos are to harsh and I don't like conditioners. What I'm looking for is a moisturizing shampoo. Any suggestions? ...........and Joe...........I've already tried the "beer" rinse. :D

While it is not the gold standard, Head and Shoulders recently came out with a version that deals with dry scalp. It is balanced for everyday use.
I am sure Issy has some sort of mixture of oil/salt/sugar or vinegar he can tell you about... :D

Oh man, it didn't work  :rofl
One thing that I know which can be good for dry scalp is jojoba oil. Massaging that into the scalp and hair might be a good idea......probably before the shower, or immediately after shampooing.
Issy might suggest coconut oil, I have heard him mention applying a very small amount of coconut oil can help with scalp/hair moisturization.
As far as actual "products" are concerned, I know that the Dr Hauschka treatments work very well:
Shampoo: Apricot and Sea Buckthorn
for dry or damaged hair
Restore body and shine to dry, brittle or damaged hair with oils and extracts of select botanicals.
Gentle cleaning for dry, damaged hair
Neem and burdock extracts restore brittle hair
Apricot kernel, rose hip and seabuckthorn oils moisturize and shine

I remember Isaac mentioning in another thread he had similar results. I know Issy also only uses his own soap and some of the coconut oil he previously mentioned.
Issy also told me about a facial cleaner made out of Olive Oil and Sugar!
But Issy works in soap voodoo and what he can do might not work for you :D

I also use (preferrably superfatted) soap bars for showering and washing my hair. Superfatted soaps should also work great on a dry scalp.

Steve- what are you using now to shampoo your hair?
How about we get to the "root" ;) of this problem.
- - - I have a feeling what you're using has SLS in it........which can be irritating/drying to the scalp.
Now some peeps will say "But I have been using it for YEARS with no problem, your nuts! SLS is fine! I slather it all over!" Well, maybe it works for some, but it is a known skin irritant in many cases. But moreover, your skin/scalp can become allergic to it and develop an aversion and subsequently a reaction to it.

Well I'd say there's quite a bit of oils and emollients in there.....certainly throws my theory out the window.
I think Rick's idea of using a tonic is a good one :D
Drinking enough water? Vitamins?

OK, water intake and vitamins are good.
I've been using American Crew pomade. The ingredients are:
Water, PEG 25 Hydrogenated Castor Oil (Castor Bean), Oleth 10, Lanolin, Oleth 20, Diisopropyl Dimer Dilonoleate, Glycerin (Coconut Oil), Hydroxypropyl Distearyldimonium Chloride, Alcohol (Mixed Grain), Ginseng (Panax Ginseng) Extract (Ginseng Roots), Sage (Salvia Officinalis) Extract (Sage Leaves), Quillaja Saponaria Extract (Panama Bark), PVP, Propylene Glycol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Diazolidinyl Urea, Benzoic Acid
Are there any "Tonic" recommendations?
So far Ive only tried these:
Pashana Blue orchid and Eau de Quinine.
They work well but I think you may need a product that is more moisturizing.
I believe the Pashana Original has glycerin in there, so that may be something to look at.
Call Charles at www.qedusa.com (http://www.qedusa.com) and talk to the man.
He carries these products and others that might be able to help.
I'm sure he will have some good advice for you.

I have to ring in here and say that Issy's soap is great on the hair. I was always taught that bar soap dries out the hair and scalp. I was quite shocked when Issy said to use it on my head. I occasionally suffer from dry scalp as well. Let me tell you that since ive been using Issy's on my head..i havent itched up there at all. I would recommend that. The coconut oil that Issy recommends would also give you a moisturizing boost.

I find when my scalp is very dry, I work a palm full of straight olive oil or coconut oil in my hair for 20 min before getting in the shower. As a preventative, sometimes I'll squirt a few drops into my palm and then my regular amount of shampoo

I have the same problem. I buzz my hair and in the winter my scalp gets beyond dry and starts to flake and hurt. It helps to slather some conditioner all over the scalp and leave it there for the duration of the shower. If that isnt enough, I'll do a half an hour oil rub and thats taken care of it at the worst of times. Just shower and wash it out after.

Has anyone tried to mix shampoo with OO yet for combined application? I don't know if I've given this advice before, but stay CLEAR of shampoos containing SLS and/or SLES, these surfactants will dry your skin very badly.
JayKay
08-25-2008, 04:15 PM
I have not but I dont know how well that would work. Soap tends to work by forming a hydrophobic ring around dirt that can than be washed away with the dirt. I would have to assume that shampoo works the same way and I feel that the shampoo may just encompass the oils and wash them away/keep them from being effective. I would probably go with the oil first and than wash it off.

Didn't see it mentioned so will throw out for your consideration: Tea Tree by Paul Mitchell. It's on the pricey side but you don't need much. A dime or nickle size dolop lathers up nicely. It's got that nice eucalyptus, mentholy tingle going on. I used to have a dry, itchy scalp too but no more. I've used this exclusively for 13 years on the advice of a hair stylist friend of mine. Me likey.

Steve, I read some of the ingredients your shampoo has. It reminds me to my situation. But I'm allergic to Phenoxyethanol. I had the same problems.
Are you using a bar soap for showering? Perhaps you don't know you have an allergic.
My way is to use a mild shampoo and a tonic afterwards.
Unfortunately I can only speak for the products in Germany. I know a Tonic from Tabac Original for dry hair,
http://www.tabac-original.de/images/Gruppe%20Hair%20Lotion%20Oil.jpg
but I haven't used it yet.
This one maght work for you too
http://www.germandeli.com/klha75.html
But the main ingredient Paraffinum liquidum is not the best.
Most of the time I use Seborin. A german classic
http://www.seborin.de/_pic/produkte/haarwasser_g.gif
I can't use bar soap for my hair on a regular basis. Otherwise I get dandruffs
1/4 of apple cider vinegar mixed with a cup of water as a rinse will stop the itch, it will also remove leftover soaps and rinses...plus the vinegar scent wont stay either ( I do add a drop of EO to mine and only use it once or twice a mo.
