WOW what a burn, I see why Raf doesn't like Aqua Velva.
Shaving with a DE and using ABAS give me hardly any burn (with some exceptions).
But while shaving with a Straight........................................OU CH!
Anyone else get this or am I doing something wrong.

It was that 1/4 layer of extra skin you peeled off with the str8. You're OK.

That is what I figured.
I love Straights and I love ABAS but why dose it hurt me so. :(
Do you
WWR then
CWR then apply
ABAS ??
I remember back in the day I didnt include the CWR part of the routine and
the Velva used to destroy me for about 15 sec. then the good stuff kicked in.
A month ago or so I added a Witch Hazel spritz AFTER the CWR but
before the ABAS and that has really cut down on the burn.
Not saying everyone needs ALL my steps but they sure work for me.
WWR
CWR
Witch Hazel spritz (let air dry while cleaning up hard ware)
ABAS
ASB / moisturizer (if needed)

Been there, done that:
First, I'd like to extend a HUGE "Thank You" to Chris, for allowing me to use his straight razor equipment....truly a very generous offer, from a very generous man.
I have just today received my kit,

Now I have this incredible tools to use for a month, but I wasn't wasting any time so I went and took a shave, to wipe out any 5 o'clock shadow that was creeping up:

Well, the end result was glorious, I had a great shave. I was anxious during the shave, and realize that I will need to take my time going forward but am very happy with the results. Although its not visible (even in person) I did manage to chew up my skin a little and it burns a bit, but that was nothing a half-bottle of velva and a slathering of Anherb conditioner couldn't clear right up.
after the shave, numb/high on menthol and BBS.

It's not you Will. One of advantages of the str8 is working against you on this one. How irritated does your face look before you splash? I bet it looks pretty clean and redness free.

But you used so much Aftershave that the menthol probably acted like Morphine.
I am talking a normal amount, not enough to knock out a bear. :rofl

Yep,
Smooth as glass, no redness/irritation at all.
In fact quite moisturized and soft.

Well, Will, alcohol base has nothing to do with it. I don't like Velva because it smells terrible:eek::D
Maybe you took off a little too much skin this time. Ease off on the pressure a bit and watch your angle.

Yep, its like any other razor. If you get it just right, there won't be much burn. Its a good measure of how you're doing. If you can get BBS with minimal burn, you've nailed it.

I use to get that ouch burn...but im finding as im refining my techniques....i dont feel that burn anymore.
As your technique improves you will definitely get less and less burn with alcohol based products!! Try a lighter touch and maybe bring the spine of the razor a little closer to your face while you shave!!

I actually like the alcohol base better with a straight shave.
My personal favorite combos for the straight shave these days:
Frasiers cream + Pinaud Clubman Musk = Barbershop perfection
DR Harris Lavender soap + DR Harris Sandalwood AS = Heaven :D

Okay, I know I'm a little late getting in on this one, but I shave with a straght daily, and my preferred aftershave is straight up rum. I make my own bay rum using dark rum, bay leaves, and a few other ingredients.
I get a little burn from it if I go for a true BBS, but otherwise no problems.
I know of straight users who use rubbing alcohol as their aftershave...
Once you get your technique down, there should be little or no irritation from a straight shave.

Don't worry bud, I am their.
Been at it for a while and I am back to taking a bath in the velva after a straight shave. Matter of fact I just did it about an hour ago. :)
Turns out ya'll were right, I was a shaving way too close.
