Now, I need to smoke something. Nice pic and don't fret about the lighting part. It takes a lot of practice to get it right since there are a number of variables like how wet and the cut the tobacco is and how hard you initially tamped it down. Stuff like that.

Well, that’s a new hobby and a part of the pleasure that derives from it is the learning curve, discovering new tastes, refining your palate, starting to discriminate, etc. I already have a dangerous fondness for coffee, whisky, wine, shaving (when I get tired of my beard) and photography. Now starts my journey in the wonderful world of tobacco.

For the time being, I have more pleasure with a cigar as there are few variables. Is it true that pipe smoking is more subtle when you have mastered its art?

Looks like you have a number of my ADs. :D

hmmmm...subtle. That's a tough one. There are different styles of pipe smokers. Some are the one puff per two minute, I forgot I was smoking a pipe ones, some are the chimney smoking burn out a pipe in 3 months kind and then there are the ones that the pipe just looks like a natural extension of their hand and looking at how they enjoy and manage a smoke is sublime. Pipe smoking is an art that requires a more laid back approach. If you're in a hurry, don't pick up the pipe. :D

Well, I’m a pretty laid-back guy and I have plenty of free time. :D The only problem here is I can’t find an online tobacco dealer, it seems it is forbidden in France. My choices are very limited so I’ll have to buy a lot of tobaccos in Paris when I get there.

Dusted off my old Napolitan coffee machine. I forgot how vastly superior the French press was, but I took a cute pic nonetheless. :D

Got a how-to on that one? That's a really sharp

Lyrt
09-06-2007, 06:13 PM
Sure.

1) I made a HDR (high dynamic range) photograph (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging) with Photomatix.
2) Open the resulting image in Photoshop. Here, use the Filter => Sharpen => Unsharp Mask (amount = 35%; radius = 100% ; Threshold= 3)
3) Create a new layer in Overlay mode and fill it with blue to create that cold, metallic ambiance.
4) Blur tool around the Napolitan coffee machine.

Done. :D

Very cool, I have seen some HDR work before. You're getting very good results. The extra PS work you did really makes that one pop.

Any fool can light up a cigar and enjoy it ;)
but smoking a pipe is an art.
Again, not unlike wet shaving, there are MANY variables involved.
Type of pipe, pipe itself, condition of pipe, drilling of pipe, "cake" in pipe....
Type of baccy, condition of baccy - too wet, too dry- flake, plug, ribbon.....
Quality of "pack" - how you loaded the pipe.....
Tamping expertise.....

You get the idea.

Ive been smoking a pipe off and on for over 20 years and some days its like Ive never burned a bowl before.
Patience, laddie.
Its worth it.

Cigars for the fool. ;)

Cuban Cohíba, La Línea 1492, Siglo II.
Romeo y Julieta, Mille Fleur.

The Mille Fleur is machine made and hand finished. Its overall quality seems inferior to that of the Cohíba. More later.

My GOD.....those are some awesome pictures your taking. What camera do you use? I know most of it is finished in photoshop, but i need a camera anyway.

Thank you for the compliment. I have an antique Nikon D70. I will probably sell an arm and a foot to get the new D3.

Just a Nikon D3?

What cameras do you recommend for a newbie that wants something that will last..but not more than 500. Good all around....BTW......your skill....is that your job or a hobby.

I've added yet another one of yours to my list to try!

First, I was very disappointed with the Romeo y Julieta. Next time I’ll buy one of their premium cigar and not a Mille Fleur. It burns your mouth and it is kind of hard to suck up. The Cohiba was excellent but a bit more bitter than the Maduro 5.

What cameras do you recommend for a newbie that wants something that will last..but not more than 500.
It all depends on what you want to do and the amount of time you’re willing to spend learning photography. If you want something that lasts, I’d suggest increasing your budget up to $600-700 to buy an entry level digital single lens reflex by Canon or Nikon. If you really don’t want or can’t spend more than $500 on a DSLR, you’ll have to get a point-and-shoot camera.

My experience with P&S is extremely limited, but if I personally had to buy one right now, that would be the new Canon G9 with no hesitation. It’s a compact digital camera that gives all the controls you get in a DSLR. There are many good P&S brands today (Nikon, Fuji, Sony or Panasonic all make cameras producing excellent images), but most are fully-automated machines. They, not you, control the image.

BTW......your skill....is that your job or a hobby.
Just a hobby.

You're killing me with those pics. You need to start taking photos for trade magazines and make a few bucks.
I appreciate the sentiment but photography is really just a hobby. It’s precisely because there is no assignment that I like spending time on it.

(I had no idea pumpkin beer even existed)
