View Full Version : Some Progress
Things just keep piling up, and I can't seem to get ahead. Maybe I should hire some help...
At any rate, here are a few I've been working on. They are really still in the rough stages, but it may give you an idea what the ugly ducklings look like so far. Three are already promised to someone. One of the single-piece razors will likely go on ebay 'cause it's the only fair way I can think of to sell it.
I may put the others that are available on my "Private Stock" page of my web site which exists specifically for my past customers. This page is not linked from anywhere on my regular site. In fact, there are two razors left on that page that will get bumped to my regular site relatively soon. I only leave them there for a while to give my best customers first crack at them.
If any of you have purchased razors from me in the past and have not received notification of this link, shoot me a PM and I'll get it to you.
Back to the upcoming batch. Once these get finished, I may not be able to work on razors for a while. I have to build a shed in the back yard. I have to build a rock and tile BBQ area there as well. I have to build my hidden room for guns and 'n' stuff. And... I have to build bookcases for the library and a storage area in the family room for DVD's and the like. I won't be able to fit in too much razor stuff...
459
All this file work will need finishing touches...
462
These are the one-piece razors. I have one similar on my site (http://www.billysblades.com/Custom%20Stuff/Big%20Dipper.htm). One will go to eBay.
463
More rough file work. Go to my gallery (http://www.theshaveden.com/forum/vbpicgallery.php?do=view&g=238)to see the rest.

I was thinking I could donate one of them to a raffle here on TSD. There would have to be a minimum of 100 tickets sold in 5-ticket blocks at $6 per block. To make it fair, I don't think there should be any more than 500 total tickets sold. Details later, but all proceeds will be going to the upkeep of this site.

I'm interested.
Looks like it just might work out. Details can be worked out later. I have to finish them all first. Because of other commitments, it probably won't happen for a couple months. I'm only a little slow because I am so busy.
A little more info for the curious.
The one to be given to the Shave Den is the bottom one with filework on the tang in the very first picture. It is also the last pic shown of the four that gives a close-up of the filework. The steel is 440C stainless with a blade width between 7/8 and 8/8. It is 1/8 inch thick.
The two with filework thus far are out of 1/8 thick 440C stainless. The rest are out of 5/32 inch thick ATS-34 stainless.
The razor on the top left in the first pic is a 10/8. No wimps allowed on this one for sure.
The two similar blades in the first pic closest to the single-piece razor are between 7/8 and 8/8 using ATS-34 stainless. They will be getting filework as well.
The two single-piece razors are a full 8/8 in width and are ATS-34 stainless. I'm sure I'll gussy them up a bit. These are a joy to shave with, by the way. Don't even need to switch hands 'cause you can see what you are doing with it. Ergonomically dandy, as well. They are very comfortable to hold in many positions. The only concern for these is protecting the blade when it's not being used. There will be options for the buyer on that.

Great offer by Bill, very nice and as always :drool:drool:drool
I shaved with my Shapleigh Custom Purple Scale by Bill today as always a joy to use the razor.
I figured I would give a short tutorial on how to do filework. Filework is basically just fancy jimps. They are areas to keep your fingers from slipping so easily along the spine as you use the razor.
Keep in mind, you will not be able to do this with an existing razor. You could do simple linear stuff with a thin cut-off dremel disc, but that's like putting that tinted film in your car windows that always shows the air bubbles. The razor you have has already been heat treated and is too hard to use this process. This razor hasn't been heat treated yet, so it is soft enough to use files on.
This first pic shows how I marked the blade with a thin-line permanent marker in even increments along the spine. I first make tiny dots at the desired distance near the edge for the length that I want the filework. Then I use a machinist square to extend the lines all the way across to the other side. If the tang has any taper to it, this does not work. In those cases, like this one, I eyeball it.
524
Then I take a small triangular file and put a V on alternating marks along the spine. I do this to keep the round file that I will be using in the next step from drifting and messing up the pattern.
525
Then I come back and use a round file and take away the material to the parallel marking on the farther edge. The parallel markings were put on before any grinding took place. The spacing between lines is about the diameter of the round file that you would use. The thicker the spine, the bigger file you can use. You can experiment with different distances and file sizes to suit your own artistic touches.
526
Go around to all the marks and file all these half circles. It should look symmetrical... or close to it. I'm a bit off in a spot or two. I'll blame it on 60 year-old eyeballs.
527
Oh, there's more to come. The filework is not done yet.

Very interesting! I'd love to see more of the from start to finish process. :)
I have to make an addendum to the statement I made about not being able to do filework on existing razors.
Dave Thomas, a knifemaker, does it and his work is fantastic. He says that he starts with a diamond coated file and then goes to carbon files to finish up. I am not at liberty to say exactly what he does because I do not have his permission to reveal his techniques.
The man gave me some fossilized dinosaur tooth to use on some scales. That stuff is really priiiii - tee.
He does say that it ruins files. One knife ~ one ruined file. So it can get expensive. I have patience, but not that much patience.
I’m in admiration of your craftsmanship. In our society of services, it is often frustrating to produce “invisible goods”, while you can produce things you carve with your own hands. And from craftsman you can become artist.

Very reasonable considering the workmanship as well as the quality. If I ever get into straights Bill I will be come to you for one. :)
Keep in mind, this is only one of the many patterns of filework that I use. For this one, I start out with a small quality triangular file and make a barb at the trailing edge of each half circle.
529
Then, do the rest of them. Try to keep things close. *word to the wise - try this on scrap material first* This pic shows everything in the rough stages of filing.
530
Everything is a little closer, but now I need to ensure all the barbs have a point and not a square end. The finesse stage is next. I try to get everything with the filework as close as I can get it before it goes to heat treating.
531
Don't forget to add the filework to the bottom of the tang. Here's your $60 Sledge... :D
532
This one is not spoken for, by the way. The only one not spoken for. It will probably go for $345. It's a 10/8's with ATS-34. Haven't decided on scales yet...

Beautiful work Bill, you really have amazing talent!
Really looking forward to more in progress reports, and of course the final product!
? you say $60, and in the next sentance... $345? now im totally lost...
I was poking fun at the person who wanted my $120 scales for $60. Shape up, termite. Just think about that $60 price tag for a sec.
What would you guess the steel cost is? It's about $12
What do you think heat treating costs are? About $11
What do you think the cost for those 2 x 72 sanding belts run that do all the grinding? Almost $6 apiece - I'll go through 3, at least.
What do you think the incidental costs like glue, sheet sandpaper, rod, washers, and the like are? I'd say about $7 to $8
How much do you think those splinters of wood cost to make the scales? Quality wood can sometimes run $35, easily, for a nice set of knife scales. Divide it by three, just for giggles. We'll say $12I still haven't factored overhead in the equasion. We'll just skip that part, also for giggles. My abacus tells me the total is up to $60 just for materials. Now... do you even remotely think I would spend probably 20 hours on something and then just pass it on for material cost? As John Pinette would exclaim, "Oh, nay nay!"
Somebody help me....

A lot of people cannot put two and two together sadly. It seems like people just seem to forget that the time is even more important and valuable than the materials involved.
Not only that but the time it took to learn how to preform the skill in the first place. Also let's face is, quality costs money. Rightfully so.

Just out of curiosity, may I ask why you don't use rotating tools to grind instead of files? Would the developing heat maybe have a negative impact on the metal's properties?

345 - 60 = 285

but personally, i do think 20 hours is a bit liberal... even with the custom filing, which would probably be in the top 3 for processes that took the most time... i couldnt see those taking more than 8 hours, maybe 10 to complete... of course i dont know this for a fact, it just doesnt seem like it would take that long... unless he is very leisurely going about it, which i cant see why he wouldnt... not like hes on a deadline working for anyone lol i would take me sweet time too ::
Until you do it yourself and see how long it takes you really can't say what you think it would take. Besides we only have very little information into what Bill does, so it really isn't fair for any of us to suggest how long it takes or what he should do or really anything on the topic. He is the expert, we just marvel at what he does.
A more common example of just how time can really stretch out even for something SIMPLE, making a chicken stock takes 10-12 hours and that is just simmering bones and vegetables! You rush it and you get something horribly bitter or unsatisfying. Just think of what would happen if you try to be quick with a custom straight razor. I wouldn't want to think of the result.:eek:

...simply conveying that i think you spend a lot of time on your razors... probably more time than necessary.
... And you've been restoring or making razors how long to make this assessment? Y'know, my grandma used to say that when you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging. ;)
It fleetingly crossed my mind that you may not be entirely knowledgeable in regards to this subject, so gifting me with uneducated criticism could, quite conceivably, be received as an insult. Thanks Raf....Post on Bill!
Here are some updates on the filework. I'm close to being done with all but one. Once I'm satisfied, it's off to the heat treating process.
Here's the very first pattern of file work I ever did on a knife. I call it, simply, the vine pattern. It's simple, but pretty classy.
587
This is a view of the vine filework from the side. Attention to detail is pretty important when it comes to filework. Doing it properly can be tedious. I have to make sure it's right on before heat treat. Once it's 60 on the Rockwell C-scale... it's too late.
588
This is a view of a longer stretch of "modified vine". It's on one of the single-piece razors.
589
This is my half moon version. I like this one especially on thinner blades. It's actually pretty hard to do.
590
This is a group of the patterns. The one in front is "modified rope"
591
Here is another side view. The trick is to make everything look the same.

All of the razors are spoken for. Most of 'em without pricetags on them yet. It didn't seem to matter much to anyone. All I have said to my customers is that I would try to keep them at or under $400. I'm gonna be able to keep my word on that. I know I could get more based on other custom prices around these days because I know my work meets or exceeds anything out there... but for some reason, running my prices up just doesn't seem right to me.
I have to consider availability because I'm not sure when I'll get around to making more. Because of that, one of the single-piece razors will go on ebay. It's the only way I can figure to be fair and not slight one customer over another. There may even be a second one that I will do the same thing with because the guy who it was promised to has been waiting about a year for it. He may change his mind... we'll see.
That leaves the one out of 440C stainless that I am going to give to the ShaveDen. I will finish that one up first when it comes back from heat treat. It will be a raffle-based affair. I think I will need to limit ticket sales so that everyone has a better chance at winning. Minimum buy-in is $6 for 5 numbers. The odd dollar is just to cover the paypal charges to my account. All other proceeds go to the Den. I'm even going to absorb the material costs.
I'm thinking 500 total tickets - any thoughts? Allow more? Maybe I should limit the number of tickets sold to any single person, as well, to make it more fair - Yes/No ? Anyone have concerns about how the raffle will be conducted?

Since anything other than intended crisp edges look really good to me, I do my polishing with the sandpapers as you noted. I only round off the outer edges of my scales. I also am not a big fan of mirror finishes for the same reason and that's because the buffing process rounds the nice lines of the knife/razor away. With that said, I seldom take a blade to the buffer for the filework. I will usually use the radial bristle discs to remove the discoloration from the heat treat process. A toothbrush and MEK works ok at removing a lot of the discoloration as well.
I don't polish the fileworked areas too much because then the contrast is lost and the patterns don't show up as pronounced as they would otherwise.
PS if you keep turning out work like this , I`m given up ,taking my ball and going homeDon't do that. You are doing just fine. Remember, I've been doing this a lot longer than you. Since '91. I'm bound to get a good one once in a while after that amount of time.
I sent the razors off to Paul Bos the day before yesterday for heat treating, so I should have them back in about a week... unless they get lost in the mail.
They will be an ugly brown/rust color when they get back. Paul, by the way, is one of the premier heat treaters in the U.S.
When they do get back, I will start on the ShaveDen razor first and get the show on the road. Now I gotta figure out what scales to put on it??????????

Perhaps you should start a poll, so everyone can vote in an orderly manner. :D
And then, you can just choose the scales you think will look the best. :rofl

Or get going with the lottery now and whoever wins the razor can have his own preferred scales installed on it that way its a win-win situation .

Real good point and that would probably work. The single drawback would be that the losers may not get as much of a kick out of following the tread as the razor nears completion. I'm mean that way...
Perhaps you should start a poll, so everyone can vote in an orderly manner.
That might be fun... unless I run across something that may look better, but haven't taken a pic of it yet. Let's see what everyone thinks. Only one choice allowed.
Hey, by the way. I see a star rating for this thread, but only one person voted. And that was probably me. What's up with that?

well thats the one I voted for cinnamon burl, now thats a nice wood, I dont have alot of experience making scales but I love to see the patterns, thats why I like Laburnum...a definate pattern to it, plus I like have sides that dont exacly match ,pattern and grain , to me the way I like it if its for me then I go with individuality.
Refering to a post that Bill replied to, he mentioned that he sees a personality in a razor and matches it to scales of different woods, that I can appreciate and aggree with.
I have a few sets I will be showing soon but I do love Joe and Bills work...one day...hmmm
So there you have it I voted for the cinammon Burl cos its lovely...
The good news is that the blades are back. The bad news is that I can't work on the razor until my shed is done. The shed is about 80% complete. Actually, I haven't told anyone but the Shave Den. I wasn't looking for attention. Just wanted to do something for this crew.
