View Full Version : Simpson Vs. Saville Row

I'm going to get a new brush very shortly. I've been reading for the better part of a month about the different brushes out there and think I've got it narrowed down. I was fairly certain that I wanted an SR 3122 but then I started reading a lot about Simpson brushes, mainly a Duke #3.
Currently I have the C&E BBB but I want something a bit softer and around the same size, maybe a bit denser. I think I want the knot to be about 22mm - 24mm. How would the Duke compare to my C&E brush and the SR 3122?
I've heard the SR is very soft but I haven't heard much about the feel of the Duke. The Duke's knot is of Best Badger hair while the SR is called Silvertip. I wouldn't think that 1 mm would cause that much of a price difference. Is the Duke Best the same grade as SR Silvertip?
At this point I don't use soaps at all. Does one of these perform better with creams than the other? From what I hear, the CE BBB does great with soaps so thats not very important in my decision making for this next brush.
Thanks for any input!

I had a Duke 3 in best, and while it is an excellent brush and very aesthetically pleasing, I don't think its what you are aiming for.
The loft is short, densely packed, and on the "stiff"/scrubby end of the spectrum. An ideal brush for soaps.
Would it work good for creams? Heck yeah.
But if you want a brush that is softer than a C&E Best Badger, the Savile Row 3xxx series is the way to go :happy088
Good luck :D

Any of the Dukes are great brushes if you use soaps. The Duke 3 is the only one I put to creams on occasion. It's a big bigger and not quite as scrubby feeling as the 2, but still very compact and dense. If you seek a brush that is soft and will excel with creams, the SR would probably be your better option.
Dont have a SR....yet. But
my "new" Kent BK4 is great with creams and its a smaller knot.
Somebody will chime in for sure.
22 or 23 mm knot with soft tips that lathers great and doesnt splay all over my face.

Rick, the man asked about Savile Row. NOW you had to go and mention the Kent. What are you trying to do set off SBAD :happy001
Anyway, yes I would also highly recommned a Kent BK4 as it is everything Rick says, but also works superbly with all shave soaps.

SR = Tight, soft, luxury.
Kent = Flop, soft, luxury.
They work for both soaps and cream, the SR may have more edge on Soap and the Kent would have more edge on Creams.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to have to put some thought into the Kent BK4. It seems to be a bargain at around 85 bucks when compared to the SR3122, which it seems to match pretty close as far as measurements are concerned. The only thing they didn't list at Kent's website was the exact knot size.
Is there a reseller in the US or should i just get if off of kentbrushes.com?

The SR is going to cost more, but it will also have much more hair. Much denser (but yet still soft, luxurious).
the specs on the Kent BK4 are: Knot, 22mm, Loft, 60mm. handle, 50mm
Can we all just say this together ??
BUY THEM BOTH !!

That would be nice! Must resist SBAD... :(
I like a dense brush. All I have to compare is an SR 101 and my C&E Best Badger. Is the Bk4 more dense than the C&E? I like to really work the lather into my face using circular motions. Would the Bk4 might be to floppy for that? When I first got the brush, it wasn't the softness that I liked as much as the density of if compared to the SR101 which was pretty loose.

If dense is what you want, BK4 is not your brush. It is less dense than the C&E Best.
The SR, on the other hand will be multiple times more dense

James ....
if you are looking for a dense brush, the BK4 aint really whatcha need.
BUT.
Since you were talking about creams I assumed you used a bowl to build your creamy lather in.
When I go for face building lather I reach for my SuperChubby 1.
That dude is THE densest brush around.
OTOH...my Rooney SuperSmall 3/1 is also packed pretty tightly.
SavileRows get a lot of good press, though.
I hear the ShaveMaster brushes are good.
Glad I could help :D

Thanks to everyone for all of the feedback! I use a bowl to start the lather and then go to the face. Sometimes I make all of the lather in the bowl but go with a scrub down while applying the lather just for the feel of it. I think I'm going to go with the SR this time around and maybe try all of the others in due time :)

I managed to sneak out of casa del Scorpio with the SR208 and gave it a try this morning.
Overall this is a nice brush. Floppy compared to my others, but that's not a fair comparison as Simpsons are the some of the stiffest brushes out there. I may have to pick me up one of these.

I've been compiling a dimensionality list of all the major shave brushes for the Kent BK4 I show 105mm (overall) 50mm (handle) 55mm (loft) 33mm (handle width....ERRRR, Kent doesnt call it "knot size" so knot size may be smaller than that.
Right now have all or most of the Rooneys' & Vulfixs & Kent's down pat.
Big holes in Saviles, only have knot size for:
SR-3326
SR-3122
SR-3124
SR-3126
SR-3128
SR-3118
For Simpsons am missing H,L,K on Polo 14 & PJ1, Duke 2 & 1 & Tulip 1
as well as missing H, L, K on the more obscure brushes from the old, obscure
company. Eagles, G1 & G2. Beauforts 1 thru 5, Emperor 1 & 2, Commodore 1 & 2 and Berkeley.
Classic 1 &2, The Colonel. Harvard (H1thru H6). Rover...LOL, there must be alotta Simpson's cuz they sure got alotta brushs.
If anyone is reading this still & still awake, I have in fact proposed an elopement w/Sandoval's H6. LOL
ShaveMac I've only got K's so missing all O,H,L
If anybody could fill in the knowledge holes would appreciate it. Am gonna post the spreadsheet somewhere when its done. Hopefully it'll be useful in helping to find brushes across brands in a size you want & then you can start
looking at picture's, prices, hair grades, etc.

During my research, I emailed Charles and asked him for his brush line up and then asked for measurements of the two that I was interested in. He sent them without hesitation.
SR3122 measurements:
• Handle height = 47mm (1.85")
• Hair height = 57mm (2.24")
• Total height = 104mm (4.09")
• Knot size [hair diameter at base] = 22mm (0.87")
• Grip ring [narrowest part of handle] = 28mm (1.10")
• Base of handle = 35mm (1.38")
SR3722 measurements:
• Handle height = 57mm (2.24")
• Hair height = 57mm (2.24")
• Total height = 114mm (4.48")
• Knot size [hair diameter at base] = 22mm (0.87")
• Grip ring [narrowest part of handle] = 26mm (1.02")
• Base of handle = 36mm (1.42")

I see Hyperwarp mentioned Shavemacs. They are supposed to be a pretty good brush aren't they, and supposedly the maker of SRs for QED?
I myself have the SMFIII (Rooney) brush which is just my absolute go to brush, as well as both the B&B 2006(E.J) brushes which don't get as much of a run, they are nice but too floppy for me.
I would like to find a new brush similar in size to the SMFIII brush but even more firmer, and I was considering a Shavemac as I believe they are fairly well packed. What do you guys reckon? Sorry for jumping in on this thread but it is sort of a similar question.
Cheers

While I have never used the SMFIII, I do know that it is a fan-shaped brush, and I know what you said (it is firmer then the B&B brush).
Given those facts, keep in mind that Shavemacs are bulb shaped, unless you get a VLB which comes optional in the fan-shape. Personally, I enjoy the bulb shape brushes....but not everybody is crazy about them. In the end, I can always recommend a Shavemac or Savile Row. Very dense yet soft/luxurious......but at the same time will hold their shape very well as opposed to splaying out all over your face.

Rooney Style 2 on left and Custom Shavemac on right. Both are fan shaped.

Thanks Joe,
Something else for me to consider, I had never thought about that.
I have never used a bulb shaped brush so am not sure what to really expect.
With my comparisons between the B&B and SMFIII the SMF is certainly much firmer, but it still spreads all over my face, I'm just looking for something a bit firmer than that. I am open to suggestion though.........

I see Hyperwarp mentioned Shavemacs.
I mentioned Shavemac because I only have knot sizes for the models on their
website: #22545, #151 & #22559. Can't find the other dimensions (Overall length , handle length, loft) I need to fill in my spreadsheet. Any reliable dimensions on current in production Shavemacs by anybody who knows would
be appreciated.
When (if ever) I get this xls done, then it can be sorted by anybody to isolate similarly dimensioned brushes. Hopefully, this would be useful to the
guys ('n gals) who have an idea on what "size" brush they're wanting to acquire, to get an idea of what maker's & models might suit their needs.
They can them look'em up online & think about other variables such as handle material & badger grades & prices.
