Someone at another wet shaving forum claimed that the reason he does not use shave cream is that the menthol in the cream keeps him from noticing his bad shaving form. Now I am not saying this is necessarily a bad thing, btut my question is this - do you find that shave cream masks your bad shaving technique? I would like to see is Shave Den forum member's opinion on this matter is.

Hmmm..interesting question. I don't think any product is going to mask bad form. You screw up your technique and you'll pay for it. With that said, some products be more forgiving then others of your mistakes. You have to look at each component of the shave process. Equipment, cream/soap, preparation and technique. The soap or cream is only one piece of the puzzle.

Unless the cream has Novocaine in it you will notice your bad form after a shave I promise you.

I don't think SC is responsible for this. I think menthol is it. First time I used Proraso Pre/Post cream I took to much of it and my skin felt like narcoticated.

Personally, I prefer Menthol in my aftershaves because I like the cooling and the pore-tightening qualities. I do enjoy creams/soaps with menthol as well.....but again, I "prefer" the menthol AFTER the shave.
Does/Can the menthol mask bad form? Yes, I believe so.....at least for a short period of time. But bad form will lead to burn/bumps/other irritation and this can only be cured with repeated applications of mentholated products :D

I believe one issue is that the menthol can numb the skin a bit, after which you might press down too hard while shaving (resulting in irritation later). So, rather than mask bad form, it could create bad form. Also, some folks have a real sensistivity to menthol, so that person may have attributed skin problems with bad form when it was actually sensitivity.

Kind of like Lidocaine just before they put the stitches in. :D
