During this time period, gillette released 3 razors of varying aggressiveness.
There were three models produced in this manner, red, black, and blue. Red was the most agressive, then black, and finally blue (the least aggressive).

So if the red had a dial number..it would be >7 right?

It's been awhile since I used a gillette adjustable, but probably in that area. If you haven't held one of these before, it's also heavier than the others.

That would be just about right. The red tip is one of my favorites, I have three. :D The 1959 is a great model, the base of the handle just above the red tip is just of a little different design. It's a great looking razor, don't pass it up!!!!!!

I bid 17, I am not going over that.
What I am saying is if you want the razor, TAKE IT. :rofl
I think I am getting another one lined up from an unknown benefactor.

There is some question in my mind as to what the colors do mean. If you read Krumholz closely he refers to "different weight" razors, and Waits CD reproduces an ad from 1955 which lists these razors as...
"Light (Blue) ...for men with sensitive skin and most younger men"
" Regular (Black) ...for men with average combination of skin and beard"
" Heavy (Red) ...for men who like the heft and feel of a heavier razor"
with the added " By mid-1955, the Super Speed Trio*, three color-keyed razor weights** (handle diameters) were available: LIGHT (light blue), MEDIUM (black), and HEAVY (dark red). The colors were those of the lower half of the case and the flared twist-to-open end of the razor handle. (from Waits Safety Razor Compendium)
* emphasis Waits
**emphasis mine
Personally, I do not recall having ever seen a black flare tipped Super Speed, only the aluminum handle black tip and it is not flared. I am going to get a good balance and weigh my red, blue, silver, and black tips next week and see what the results are.
Just my $0.02.

You are correct, the black was a later edition. I wasn't thinking correctly. During this period, it was blue, unpainted, and red.

Yet as I quoted, both Waits and the Gillette ad mention a "black" flared TTO knob as part of the trio, and they talk about the heft or weight of the razor, not a change in head geometry.

Joanna,
perhaps its a better idea to link from your auctions directly to the thread starting the auctions here at TSD aswell. why ?
well because now when you click on the TSD sign at your auction your taken directly to the root of the TSD homepage.
Better is to either have a seperate link in the ebay auction linking to the thread starting the auction or directly from that TSD instead to the root to this thread because the pictures are way bigger and better in this thread then ebay shows.
It could make a difference.
just my 2 cents,

Good idea, Rene.
I'll try to remember that for the next auction.
Thanks!
