Hi I'm new here.
I just purchased 3 vintage razors from antique stores.
I got two gillettes. One is open comb and the other is a trapdoor type. The open comb has a three piece handle and a slightly bent comb.
I have been using the third razor. It is an unmarked opencomb, with a nice handle, and it gives a nice shave. I tried the trapdoor and the gillette and they both ripped me up.
I also won a merkur hefty classic on ebay, but it is still in the mail.
In my travels of the antique stores I saw an open comb made by minas(?) it was made in Canada. Does anyone know anything about this razor. I didn't buy it as I already had bought three, make that four, but it was really neat and packed flat into a blue velvet lined silver case. Should I make the stable five so early into my new hobby/obsession?
I also bought a vintage brush. It seems a bit gross to me, but the price was right. And I think it's silvertip badger. How do I know for sure? It says "VICTORIA daxer made in germany" on a black plastic handle with a gold trim around the bristles.
I haven't found a soap or cream yet, but I have been using The Body Shop's shave cream with a gillette mach three, and I love the lather and the smell.

Welcome to The Shave Den. Can you show some pictures of your razors and maybe some one can help you out. The "trap door" razor sounds like a TTO (Twist to open). It would be interesting to see what you have.

thanks! yes it is a TTO. I think I'll give it to my dad for his birthday. I also bought him a vintage Old Spice shave mug and an almost matching brush.
I'll post pictures when no one is around. They already think I'm a bit of a fool for buying and using them.

My AD is already out of control. I also have three bicycles and 6 ukuleles, and 86 vintage photographs.
It seems everything I do involves AD.

Joe, you'll fit right in. ;) Most of us have more hardware, soaps, creams, brushes, etc. than we could use in YEARS!

The razor I have been using, it is unmarked or named. The finish is a bit rough.

I am not sure if the handle was from this one, but the finish seems to match.

the pegs are shorter than the gillette, and there is no writing anywhere.

Excuse me....but the comb style of DE's ....what exactly are they for. Does the comb....comb through thicker growth?

I have only used the gillette TTO once, and it is the only full comb I have. I am not sure, but I use an open comb everyday. I have heard someone say that it is for beard trimming, but others have said opencomb gives a closer shave. I haven't been DE shaving for long enough to know for sure.

I think skin can actually get closer to the blade with the open comb. I have only used the gillette TTO once, and it is the only full comb I have.
If you are referring to the TTO, in this case a Super Speed as the pics seem to indicate, it is not a open comb razor. The TTO has a bar or a guard instead of the open comb style. The SS is one of the most commonly used Gillette DE razors as they are easy to find at a decent price. You have the beginings of a good collection. AD is taking hold:D

If I liked gold finishes I would have even more. The majority of razors at the stores I visited were gold plate, and still just $10.

Joe, my friend, I have never heard of Victoria....but that certainly looks like a boar bristle
