I just started reading Phillip Pullman's "The Golden Compass" Coming to a theater near you this year. This one is going to take a while. My father-in-law is coming for two weeks and I'm not going to get much reading done while he is here. Actually, I'm not going to get much of anything done while he is here. :D

My daughter is reading it. I don't get to touch it until she's done. By that time, the paperback will be out. :D

I've been reading a lot lately.

Started and finished: (last week)
On the Road - Jack Kerouac (It really made me want to go on a road trip)
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - J. K. Rowling (I was really happy with the entire book)
Lord Jim - Joseph Conrad (Not bad, but I didn't like it as much as some of his other books)

Just started:
Nostromo - Joseph Conrad
The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test - Tom Wolfe
Man is Not Alone - Abraham Joshua Heschel

Movie wise I saw The Simpsons Movie, and Chuck and Larry last weekend. Both were really funny. The Simpsons was as good as I had hoped and Chuck and Larry was much more serious that I had guessed before seeing it.

I've just started on Nostromo too. Read Lord Jim a year or two ago - I couldn't really get into it - must try again.

I collect old books and recently came across a collection of "classics" with things like Quentin Durward, Westward Ho!, Robinson Crusoe, The Last Days of Pompeii, and Dombey and Son.

If you like Dickens (and even if you don't) try Dombey and Son. I saw another side to Dickens in that book, although I probably should have guessed at it from his others. He writes with an enormous amount of empathy.

James.

Just saw La vie en Rose, the biography of Edith Piaf, the little sparrow.
Simply amazing! If you want to learn about this famous singer I guess you can read a book, having said that the acting is superb and I am sure she will garner many awards for this role. Sorry too lazy to look up her name.
but her transformations are incredible and her life story as well. Ok her name is Marion Cotillard!

I started " Doc Holliday" , one of the "life and times of" type of book. Also, I resumed reading Texas Rangers (not the baseball team). This is a complete history of the Rangers from their inception and creation. Great read and full of action stories.

Reading "Faith of the Fallen" by Terry Goodkind.

Movies recently included, Stardust and Underdog. Thumbs up on both of them. Stardust was a great adult fairy tale and Underdog was a good clean funny kids movie.

I just came back from seeing Superbad.

It was a good movie, crude though. I wouldnt rush out to see it in the theaters....would be a good rental though. I dont think it ranks up there with the other Aptow movies

It cost a lot of cash to go to a movie these days (money I don't have). So I don't go that much but I really want to see the new Rob Zombie Halloween flick.

Currently reading Papillon by Henri Charriere at night and After the Plague, short stories by TC Boyle on my lunch break. I've seen bits and pieces of the Papillon movie but never read the book, but always been intrigued by the story. Figure I'll read the book and then rent the movie to compare soon. I'm really enjoying the TC Boyle short stories. I've never read anything by him before but this won't be my last. He has quite the imagination and keeps his stories always fresh with new ideas. Highly recommended.

Anyone heard of Mack Bolan? He is one of my great addictions. If you are interested try mackbolan.com, the web site will fill you in on all of the details. Let me say at this point that Mack is to men what Danielle Steel is to women.

Other than that I am starting to branch out into other authors, I am working on David Hagberg then will go on to Brad Thor. Basically anything where the US President gets into the act somewhere. US President is somewhat like a requirement in bolan novels.
