Hi guys:

I'm interested in getting a set of custom scales for my straight razor and am looking for recommendations/referrals.

Thanks,

Steve

Well if your tight on a budget then dont go to Robert Williams and or Bill for scales they can run pretty high cost wise.

I found a very good balance in price versus quality from the work of Joe C.

They are all a member at TSD aswell so you can look them up at the members list and find their websites. except Robert Williams you can find him here
http://www.straightedgerazors.com/

I havent made photo's of some of my latest razors and there are still 8 razors at Robert Williams that I havent figured out what to do im surprised he hasnt pushed me what to do with them 2 months gone by already !

Peter (bg42)'s been doing some really nice scales recently (and in the past too!). I don't know what his position on custom work is but it couldn't hurt to ask.

And there's also Gary (Garythepenman) - but I haven't seen him around much lately.

Just by way of interest, I'm thinking of going the el-cheapo route to re-scale a couple of wapienicas by using the dovo replacement scales from classicshaving - a few guys I've talked to say they fit the wapis well, and even a numb-nut like me can do it (apparently)...

Actually, the scales are going to be for my Wapienica, too. Here's the idea:

My father and grandfather both served in the Navy and I'd like to commemorate their service somehow. My original design was to carve their respective ship names/numbers into each scale but was told that the hand engraving would be very difficult and after reflection, I agree.

I want them to be made out of burgundy micarta but the details of the design is up in the air. I figured whoever would be agreeable to making them would have some suggestions.

That's a really nice idea, to commemorate your father and grandfather like that.

I don't know if you've gone off the idea, but JoshEarl over at SRP had Joe Chandler rescale a wapi and engrave the blade with his initials. Looks fantastic and the price seems reasonable (the thread was called "My $60 Wapienica").

I hadn't seen Josh's razor post. I'll do a search for it. As for the idea, I'm still very much interested but I think it's a lot of lettering on such a small space. I'll give Joe a holler and see.

Thanks, James.

What took you so long Cowboy , I thought that remark should definitly lure you out of your garage.

Anyone who has the cash Bill is da man for the job if you afford it is it worth it?

Hell Yeah if I had the cash id rescale all my razors just cuz I could. but Bill will also advice you if its WORTH to rescale a razor I had some in and Bill adviced against rescaling them. Im very happy with my Shapleigh great shaver and amazing custom scale. one of these days ill be able to afford a custom Bill Str8 from scratch they are even more :drool:drool:drool you can clean a chicken with it and shave with it at nights...

Alright, let me chime in here.

I LOVE Bill's work!! And, in no way, was I trying to slight him by not going to him directly.

I'm wanting to rescale a $12 Wapienica which, while not the top of the line, is my favorite daily shaver. Somehow, it just didnt' seem right to put Bill's quality on a $12 blade.

yes but if you rescaled the wapienica with $120 US scales from Bill, you would then have a razor that is now worth $132 which sounds much more impressive than $12 when some one asks:rofl:rofl::
Kind regards Peter
