Somewhere out there on that horizon
Out beyond the neon lights
I know there must be somethin' better
But there's nowhere else in sight
It's survival in the city
When you live from day to day
City streets don't have much pity
When you're down, that's where you'll stay
In the city, oh, oh.
In the city
I was born here in the city
With my back against the wall
Nothing grows, and life ain't very pretty
No one's there to catch you when you fall
Somewhere out on that horizon
Faraway from the neon sky
I know there must be somethin' better
And I can't stay another night
In the city, oh, oh.

That explains why you are done buying shave stuff :D
I haven't seen/used the 14-24 or the 24-70, but I'd imagine they are spectacular lenses. Are these even out yet?
I have the 17-55 f/2.8, so I actually have a gap from 55 to 70
Nope, their release date is officially November, I believe. Your 17-55mm is also a spectacular lens, however it was specifically designed for DX sensor-equipped DSLR which includes every Nikon DSLR minus the new full-frame D3. The advantage of these three lenses (14-24, 24-70 and 70-200) is they are suited for both DX and full-frame sensors.
The 14-24mm would make sense if you intend to buy in the future a full-frame body. On your D200 (or even the new D300), the 14-24 will become a 21-36mm which makes no sense. If you need an ultra-wide angle lens for a DX sensor, you’d better get the 12-24mm.

Bill, thank you very much. I never thought of selling my photographs and did not even know of the existence of iStock. Like I previously said “they are protected by the copyrights of my ass.” :D
By the way, here’s a series of past photographs I took and posted here and there. It’s a kind of best-of. Beware, lots of pics.

Lyrt.....how do you capture the moving water..
Lyrt.....how do you capture the moving water..
Simple, you need to freeze it with a fast shutter speed. 1/500 is a good start. Of course, if the water itself is moving very quickly, you’ll have to speed up accordingly. The main problem you’ll have is light: the fastest the shutter speed, the greater the loss of light.
Edit: I forgot to say here a DSLR is a must-have. My D70 can only synchronise with my remote flash up to 1/500. I’d need at least a D200 to get the ultra fast synchronisation feature.

Amazing photos Yukio :drool:drool:drool Simply stunning
Do you recommend any books to read by chance?
Internet is a free book. :D
I personally started reading a lot of theory: how a camera works, how the optics work, what is the meaning of aperture, exposure, shutter speed and how they interact, etc. I read it all in French, so I can’t help you here.
Then I began practising a lot: shooting the same things thirty times with different settings; shooting the same monument at different hours to see how the lightings changed; etc. I also started looking at professional’s works: copying some tricks, looking for inspiration.
Then I learned a darkroom was 50% of a photograph. I started looking at PS tutorials and forums. Then again, I experimented a lot.
The only book I bought was a D70 guide. Now I know how my camera works and I won’t need a book when I upgrade it.
Steve and Padron, thank you.

Thanks, Yukio! Love your photo series. Could you roughly describe your steps in post processing of this latest one? It's just amazing!
First, I generated a tone-mapped hdr tiff with Photomatix. Then, in PS:
– Copy layer.
– Unsharp mask
– Create mask and reduce the blown out highlights with black brush
– Flatten
– Select the brightest tones of the photograph (ctrl + alt + ~) and create new layer (ctrl + j)
– Gaussian blur on that new layer
– Create new custom black and white adjustment layer for that same layer
– Flatten
– New adjustment layer: saturation + 20
– Loosely select cobblestones and create new layer
– Unsharp mask
– Flatten

First, I generated a tone-mapped hdr tiff with Photomatix. Then, in PS:
– Copy layer.
– Unsharp mask
– Create mask and reduce the blown out highlights with black brush
– Flatten
– Select the brightest tones of the photograph (ctrl + alt + ~) and create new layer (ctrl + j)
– Gaussian blur on that new layer
– Create new custom black and white adjustment layer for that same layer
– Flatten
– New adjustment layer: saturation + 20
– Loosely select cobblestones and create new layer
– Unsharp mask
– Flatten
Voilà!
Thank you! Now I've got something to play with tonight! ;)

Wow. Y'all's pictures are so nice. I have nothing to compare. But I have added my proudest shout. It shows two things: how stealthy I am around wildlife, and how animals other than humans can admire a good view.
I invited a friend, a photographer himself, during the holidays and I demonstrated him the possibilities HDR offers. We shot random trite stuff and tried to make something out of them.

Yukio, what programs do you use for photo editing? I'm sure its been asked before and I've just missed the answer. They look very digitized and well rendered. I like the look. Are you individually editing each photo or are you using pre-set effects? I like it. Its a good way to spiff up pictures. Looks very "Hollywood".
Photomatix, Photoshop, no filter, patience. ;)
Edit: no filter, except yesterday's DDoD.

Interesting story behind the watch; an attorney that works in the office next to mine found it in his parents attic shortly after his Mother's death. It was his father's watch that he bought in the 30's when he worked on the railroad in Collinwood Yard, Cleveland. Apparently Ball Watch Company was started in Cleveland by a Railroad Employee when he wanted watches with a high level of accuracy. This one has a movement made by Hamilton in the mid to late 30's. It still works like a top and is "on the ball." I also grew up right across the street from Collinwood yard and my grandfather worked on the railroad so it was pretty neat to be able to photograph this watch.

Here are a couple of shots taken yesterday with the D80 and Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro. Taking them is easier than post processing!! Too much to learn...the camera, file sizes, Photoshop, color management, printing (an utter failure so far)....I have a headache!!

Yea, it was a surprise as I kinda hate the camera....as it's sooo slow but the bokeh on the closeups are nice...:)
It's an old Sony 4.1Mp DSC-S85 camera, I think it's like 6 years old :o Hence my desire for a new rig
I just bought my wife an 8.1Mp Sony DSC-150 or something like that....it's a lot cooler than my old one..but I haven't played with it much yet...
Good eye on the Black Eyed Susan's, they spread like wild-fire and are all over in our garden....the other one is a Butterfly Bush......no butterflies were around today though :( but the little moth? was cool ;)

Actually, we did live a couple of years in a converted chicken coop. My parents had just come out of the Navy with a new son (me!) and my father worked various minimum salary jobs for a while.

I very much respect the art that goes into HDR photography . . . these are incredible!
John, thank you, here’s the original picture. As you can see I manipulated the colours because I want autumn to come faster.

Neale, thank you.
VeryGut, thank you, but I must admit I’m getting lazy. There are gazillions of pictures like this on Flickr. I must try to not use HDR techniques so I can improve my skills and renew my style. I’m waiting for the new Nikon 50mm to start shooting people.

Very nice Yukio, I much prefer the enhanced image over the original  Have you done an HDR tutorial? or can you point me to one? My new gear is starting to trickle in.....I got the new body yesterday.......but no lenses yet :( I also have a 50mm on the way :)
Neale, the most famous HDR tutorial on the web is that of Trey Ratcliff: http://stuckincustoms.com/2006/06/06/548/
What kind of gear did you buy?
For those interested, I posted over at SMF the part III of my photography tutorials.

Do you use the software program that they sell there to merge your bracketed images into a JPEG or do you use another program? I am not ready to try it yet, but I am very interested in the process.
So funny, I was shooting last night with the incandescent white balance setting on....I forgot about it and took some shots with the built in flash and get a lot of the blue cast you described.
I don't think my settings were close to correct.....1st one was on the Incandescent white.....2nd without....still looks pretty blue though even with the blue flowers.

Yes, I use Photomatix to merge the bracketed photographs into a TIFF (Photoshop does that just as well, only slower), but the most important feature of Photomatix is the tonemapping tool.

The problem here is it is slightly underexposed. You can easily correct it with Photoshop but honestly, the built-in flash is only for fill-in flash. Also, shooting flowers by night is simply a bad idea. Even if the flower is correctly exposed, the background will always be dark (as night). What are the blue flowers supposed to look like?
Padron

Thanks Yukio,
I will look at the photomatix program as something to consider in the future.....I do need to think about a SB800 down the road too...
I don't have any good photos of the blue flowers, just some that came in a flower bouquet I bought for my wife.
It has been raining all day and in the 40 degree temperatures....so no outdoor photos for me today. :(

Everything’s green here, no fall to photograph. I suggest you change the contrast and push up the colours. If you shoot jpeg, set your D300 on “vivid” in “picture control”.

to the photos to enhance them as I am sure you can tell :o

Thanks, Neale. Yep. That's the nice thing about a zoom with that range. No changing lenses! I did take a few with the Tokina 100mm and discovered what it means not to have VR (or a tripod). I think I'll stick to macro shots with the Tokina (which is why I bought it anyway).

Lol, that was the most difficult one to get. I met up with a group of members from the rangefinderforum for a fall shoot, in the pre-dawn darkness, in some parking lot in northern CT. We were driving along a scenic route as the sun was coming up, and it hit this barn just right. I just hope the owner was still asleep, or else he'd have seen a bunch of crazy guys on his front lawn.:D
Velvia gives some very interesting, saturated colors, as you can see in the sky in the background. This was just a straight slide scan, no post-processing and no filters.
