Stopped by my local tobacconist shop today on my way home from work, to pick up a couple of cigars.

Lo and behold, they started stocking Col. Conk Soaps, Aftershave balms, and what looked like colognes?

I grabbed a small puck of Bay Rum, and a large puck each of Amber and Almond shave soaps. The Bay Rum scent I don't care much for (I think QED, MamaBear and SCS do a much better job), but the Amber and Almond scents are NICE.

Time to whip up some lather tomorrow!!! Anyone care to comment on the Col. Conk line of shave soaps? What can I expect? :bounce017

You will love Col Conk.

Very nice!

It is a very soft soap so be careful putting hot water all over it. The soap fades fast but for 3 to 5 dollars a puck it is a steal.

Oh you lucky dog! Thats awesome.

I've been meaning to try the Conk soaps. There's a few guys around here that use it (rick, Doc) and I believe they both like it a lot.

Let me know how it goes, and if you ever pick up a bottle of the ASB or cologne :happy088

Will do! The small pucks were $3, and the large pucks were $5. Guess I'll have to stock up! I couldn't find any information on their colognes and/or ASB, so I skipped those tonight... but I might have to put on my guinea pig hat and take the plunge for the collective team... and post reviews!! ::kar

Oh, man...I love Col. Conk. The Bay Rum was my very first soap when I started using a brush last year. I can get it at a local tobacconist, too, and a general store nearby. I still want to try the Amber and the Almond.

Looking forward to your reviews, Jason!

Conk soaps are highly underrated! They are made by Van Der Hagen (also the makers of Surrey Soaps) are are well worth the money. Especially for travel gear. They can be easily be melted in the microwave to conform to your favorite mug, provide lubrication and also are decent at moisturizing.

Bay Rum from Conk is awesome. Scent is real nice, and the lather's terrific. Maybe it could be a bit more moisturizing, otherwise, it's super soap.

All scores based on a 1 - 10 point scale (1 being lowest, 10 being highest)

Price: 10. Simply a great value -- $5 for a large puck.

Quality: 8. Very simple design of the soap itself -- no word imprint, and packaging itself is unique, but somewhat low-key.

Scent: 10. If you like the true almond scent, this scent is one of the best smelling almond soaps I've tried so far.

Lather: 9. Great lather! Nice and slick, very effective at lubricating. Easy to lather.

Efficacy: 9. Gave me a smooth, irritation-free shave. Excellent performance, and very effective and cushioning.

Moisturizing: 7. Not the most moisturizing soap I've tried, and not quite on par with MamaBear and Honeybee Sue, but not drying either. A standard moisturizing regiment as part of your after-shave routine will suffice if using this soap.

All in all, a great soap and shave!

here's what I have to say about Col. Conk Bay Rum:

Price: 10-very reasonably priced

Quality 9-very good for the price

Scent 9-pleasant bay rum scent

Lather 9-rich and creamy

Efficacy 9-works real fine

Moisturizing 8-could be improved just a tad or a tish

Overall, a damn good shave soap!

I give it a 90%

Needs more power in the scent (but a nice scent) and It fades a bit fast, very soft soap.

Gotta agree with the other members here. I love the Amber and the Almond. Both lather very easily. Of the mass-produced soaps, I believe that Col Conk is second only to Tabac.
Overall, it was a good acquistion!

No kidding? I used Surrey Deluxe and Glycerin for years mostly because they were easy to get at local stores, and yet very good soaps. VdH had some financial troubles a few years ago, and when I finally ran out of my hoard I lucked into Col. Conk's, and was happy that it was just as good as Surrey, but smelled better! (Col. Conk's doesn't have the VdH name on it, but that's not surprising, since VdH makes tons of soaps and sells them to others for re-branding.

I was happy to see the Surrey stuff re-appear in my local stores about a year ago. They have apparently recovered from their troubles.

+1 on the Conk Bay Rum, good value for the money, nice, easy lathering, slick with a cushion.

Could use a little stronger scent, but still very nice.

Guess I'm the odd ball here, I haven't been overly impressed with the Col Conk soaps. I've tried the Bay Rum, Lime, and Amber, all available at a local knife shop that sells a limited selection of shaving supplies.

The Bay Rum lathered really well, but I never really took to the scent. The Amber and Lime soaps are a bit difficult for me to lather well. I don't like the Lime scent (almost none at all) but I really like the Amber scent. I've moved on to other soaps although I intend to try the Col Conk stuff again in the future.

I would agree with this comment to the extent that the Bay Rum and Almond soaps..... seem to lather much better than the clear ones (amber, etc)

I have the Amber only, I tried it a couple times and was less than impressed with it. Mama Bears soaps blow it away....I'll have to try it again someday, but it was a pain to lather. It could be my water, but my other soaps lather great..
