Want the most ridiculously priced shaving cream/ soap available, forget about the usual suspects: Acqua di parma, Boellis, Castle Forbes, Creed and Martin de Candre have all been trumped. I don't even think any of the few remaining pucks of Will G could top this one. (http://cgi.ebay.com/E-C-Simmons-KK-Keen-Kutter-Shaving-Cream-Soap-Box_W0QQitemZ250139783859QQihZ015QQcategoryZ887QQr dZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
Obviously, it's the brand name not the actual product that's attracting the attention, and I know I can't point the finger when it comes to impulse ebay purchases, but still?

It looks like a collector's piece so I wouldn't count it as a normal "expensive" cream. Now, the ones you mentioned at first. Those are modern available creams.

In practical terms, I don't think there is anything particularly special about the name. In collectors terms then certain older American brand names tend to be more highly valued. For example if you search ebay for shaving brushes you will find a battered old Winchester brush that's already topped $200. This one, Simmons Hardwae is like many other American brands i.e Sears and Winchester that attract the big money.
As for explaining this trend that would involve analysing the collectors themselves and those guys are even worse than the wet shavers when it comes to "seemingly" insane ebay purchases.

I agree on the collectors' mania, Alex.
Plus, in the "old" days, the hardware or general store = Wal-Mart now. They had it all. Razors were just more knives or cutlery. Sears had 'em (along with build-it-yourself house kits!!) Simmons, or Shapleighs, heck, most of those places did. Those old midwestern towns had big German populations, and they knew their steel. So they are good razors, and folks will still pay top dollar today. But it is more the collectors than anything.

It's like our Garcia Sterling Silver Custom bits. We sold more of those bits to collectors than horse people and they priced the horse people right out of the auctions. Once the collectors get hot, forget it.

Will G was a soapmaker. He sold his soaps and aftershave balms on eBay. His products were quite good and very inexpensive. He had something of a cult following after a very positive review from Joel at B&B. Unfortunately, he closed his store after some knee surgery. Sometime soon after, it was announced that he had terminal cancer.

But it's antiseptic and prevents chapping! Sometimes you just have to treat yourself:rofl
