But the Italian has some rather nice differences (besides the looks):

1) and 2) are very good differences. I find the AV scent so strong, I can't use it as often as I want, because it interferes with my cologne that I'm going to wear that day... maybe I'll try doing and extra Cold Water Rinse on those days.

3) is downright bad, and should probably be illegal. :eek: Less Menthol is never a good thing. :cool:

Result: 4.4/5.0 All things being equal, I found the De Vergulde Hand Shave Soap to be very nice. It lathered quickly, the scent was mild, unique and pleasant and it did not irritate my skin. Glide and cushion was about average for this type of soap. I will change the soap/water ratio a little to see if I can up the glide factor. I like an aftershave splash instead of a spray so, I just sprayed some into my hand and applied that way.

Having just received my Merkur 1904 and 12C (the open-comb 38C) from Jim at Vintage Blades yesterday, it was a tough choice-- but the "Sledgehammer" won out.

My usual Noxzema/shower/Proraso pre-shave/light lather/hot towels prep.
Used TGQ Orange Patchouli puck as if it were a shave stick, lathered on face with BK12. Great lather!
New Feather in the 12C, WTG, XTG, ATG + touch-up.
WWR, ice cube rub, ICWR, alum block.
Taylor's Aloe Vera WH.
ICWR.
Proraso ASB.
Tabac AS.

Marvelous BBS shave! No sting from the alum block or Tabac.
Not a sign of blood, nick, redness, or irritation.

I'd say, 4.99/5.00. I should have such a shave every day...

In a supporting role (not pictured): Proraso Pre/Post, Speick ASB

This injector shave was magnificent! I took it cautiously, but the blade did a great job and the closeness was superb. I know which razor I am using for a long while now. People claim the old Bakelite injectors were harsh, but I didn't find that. Of course, I also suspect I have a tough beard and hardy skin, so YMMV like always.

Result: This was a try a few new things shave. Not much logic to it except maybe the Musgo Real Bath Soap and Aftershave Balm. It was a 4.4/5.0 Shave. I had to work around a small blemish. The Florena cream reminded me of Arko creams. Good basic cream with no real scent to it. Lathered all over the place and protected my face well. The Musgo soap lathered up and smells real nice and all but it does not compare to Issy's Olive Oil or Epicurean's Shea Butter soaps. The Musgo ASB was a little sticky. I added a few drops of water to my face to smooth it in.

The Micromatic will take some getting used to. Much more like a str8. Control is even more important than with a DE. 2 passes were all that was needed. I think a third would have removed the top layer of skin!

Result: This is where I took some of my own advice and applied it in a very positive manner. I may have just saved a couple of products from the annoying list. First, I used the Ogallala Shave Soap in the shower. A definite plus. Smelled great and the lather issue went poof and rinsed clean. Second, I used the same Ogallala Shave Soap as a base and added the Cade shave cream on top. Cade was another annoying and even worse way overpriced item for me. For some reason, the sum of the parts were way better than the individual items. Nice lather, nice smell slick and glide were there and it finished off well. I got a 4.6/5.0 shave out of them and I will continue to use the Ogallala soap as a bath soap.

No, seriously, the Vetiver&Tangerine-version I have (I've got a beta-version) will never make the market. It's got some citrus-EOs in it that "could" cause some stinging on sensitive faces.
The new V&T-scent will be developed from scratch by a professional aromatics-therapist, but when this'll happen, I do not know - might take a few more months. The good thing is, Erik from 1000&1 soap has just greenlighted the "Dark Lavender" scented version of the Tabula Rasa. As soon as he gets the first batches of scent, the "Dark Lavender Tabula Rasa" will be available (which will also take several more weeks) ::
You guys will be the first to know - as soon as the finished product is available, I'll get a tub for reviewing-purposes :D

Result: 4.7/5.0 BBS and teeny tiny neck redness. Throw on the ASB combo, note part of it was Aqua Velva Ice Balm :D, and add some talc and "all gone." Had enough lather that I could do my clean up by ATG blade buff, swipe with lather, ATG blade buff, swipe with lather as many times as I needed. Smooth as silk.

I have to get me one of those big brushes the barbers use to apply talc with. Anyone got a good link?

Yep.. the ONLY bad thing about big brushes are the amount of lather they hold onto. But Man oh Man, are they ever decadent! Plus, if I get, like, a 550mm brush one day, I just might (*might*) make it all the way through my stash, if I don't buy anything else. :rolleyes:

I wonder if Charles will do an over-stuffed, 30mm ebony handled 3130. Do I stick with the 31XX style handle, or go for another one? 38XX? 32XX?

You can get a very fine, close shave with the Micromatic. However it requires a very light touch and attention to technique to avoid weepers, and the corners of the blade can be exposed resulting in a nasty nick. Happened to me on the first day and the healing area still has to be avoided to prevent reopening it.

I dont know how old the Shavallo soap is but it performed great. the lather reminds me density wise of VGH good thick lather that you can paint on.
