A question I received from a YouTube user:
shaving soap versus shaving cream...what's the real difference?
Wow, a "simple" question with a potentially confusing answer. How shall I respond?

Slick Vs. Cushion.

That is my argument.

Creams = more pillow effect where Soap = more razor slip and slide.

Well,

I use soaps and creams from The Gentlemen's Quarter. I can tell you that both are superb in terms of slick and cushion so it boils down to something else for me.

In summer, when I don't want extra warm lather, I use a soap. In the winter, I use cream and warm it up in a scuttle.

Soap v. cream is determined, then, by season for me.

I used to be a 99% cream user, but now, my ratio's around 50/50. Some weeks, even more soaps! :rofl

The Art of Shaving sales representative told me that their soaps have the same ingredients as the cream but in condensed form. I think soaps just have less moisture left in them for the most part and are more condensed than creams.

I love using soaps more than creams......like was said earlier by msandoval.....SOAP ROCKS!!!!

From a purely "chemical"/"chemical makeup" standpoint, soaps and creams contain many of the same or similar ingredients. Perhaps the biggest difference between the two comes down to the catalyst used in the reaction to create the end product. (which hydroxide)

Now obviously, soaps and creams have different traits, such as slickness, lubricity, protection....but I have come across soaps that have cream-like characteristics, and vice-versa.

The recommendation would be to try BOTH :D

Creams are a bit easier to make a lather. Soaps require a little work. I like both.

I like them both....and i think that the creams are less messy with cleanup/storage........

Paul, at least to me, some soaps like Erasmic, and De Vergulde Hand lather so easily, you'd swear they were creams. :D Cella Crema da Sapone is supposed to be a soap, but it thinks it's a cream--it lathers like a wild man!

I have only used creams. I have one soap just have not tried it, scent is a little too strong for me.

I use both and have no problems with making lather with either.

Another fan of both...I think I use more soaps most of the time......although creams
in the wintertime can be a bit more moisturizing :) Unless, your using Institut Karite soap ;)

i dont necessarily think soaps are slicker than all creams. many creams are slick and can be slicker than some soaps.

Absolutely. Frankly, I really don't notice much difference. They all seem to work well. Some smell better than others and creams are quicker, but other than that...

shaving creams provide a more soft supple feeling. soaps are usually harsh, no matter how mild they claim to be.

Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, I guess. What soap are you using, LAVA?!

I like both. Em's web site claims glycerin soaps may offer a closer shave than creams.

Enjoy mixing both for maximum foam, lubrication and soothing effect.
