What do you consider to be the dividing line between a serious collector, a collector and a causal wet shaver?

And to think that I have been throwing blades like that away. Maybe I should contact those folks and ask for marketing tips.

as they say... one mans junk is another mans treasure... if you have an ebay acct, and you are about to throw something away... post it up... if it sells... even if its only a few bucks, at least you didnt let it crowd your garbage can without paying you a few bucks to do it lol

I look at it as a public service to eliminate the circulation of razors like that. When I see auctions like that, I do get a chuckle most of the time. Unless it's Gabriel (http://members.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=urleebird)...

ok, considering this is a book im about to read, let it be known i started reading this about 2 minutes ago...

Sledge
09-06-2007, 02:38 PM
and im finished..... all i can say is, wow... after an hour and 45 minutes of reading (only a few interruptions) i must say... these people must have pissed you off on such a level as to haven taekn several years of life from your lungs.... for some reason im picturing loy as a middle aged (censored)... the other two? who knows... fact is man, you let people get on your nerves entirely too much lol i had a couple from overseas sell me a set of chinese baoding balls... you know? those little stress relievers? thing was, they wre the complex type... all kinds of paint and inlays... when i got them, i noticed an uneven-ness about them... came to realize that the yin-yang on one of them was actually coming out of its inlay... after many feeble attempts to get a refund from them with the return shipping paid, i ended up filing a claim with paypal (which never went anywhere... paypal is as worthless about that kinda stuff as the US mail... took a month TO-THE-DAY to get a "screw off" response from them... i refused to pay $5 - $8 to re ship an item i just paid $10 with shipping to recieve... i shouldnt have had to... it was their responsibility to make sure each item that went out was in 100% condition... not mine... but ebay didnt feel that way, and neither did paypal... so, they are sitting on my computer desk, collectin dust, waiting for the day (which will never come) that i get to meet the jackass and cram them up the sellers ass.... but, i never let it get to me too horribly...lol :)

on a light note, i didnt know you made scales... got time to make a nice set for me?

Well some of them prices are.... well.... a bit more than i can afford... lol i just wanted to get a nice set of decent scales that are shaped differently from the rest, thick, and durable.... willing to pay for it, but i think my absolute limit on scales would be about $60

I'm actually squashed for time, anyway. But there are several guys who can do the job just fine. Try...

Bg42 - Peter
garythepenman
Joe C - Joe Chandler
vladsch - Vlad (lots of luck on that one, but a true score if you can get him to do a set for you)There are others who can do a dandy job, but they'll need to sign up over here at the den before I recommend them. They are currently members on the other sites. (I'm a big fan of loyalty)

Here are a couple others I did (http://www.theshaveden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1757)by the way

what id really like to find, is a mildly priced set like these...

http://home.comcast.net/~cherylellis01/forums/PH.rene.01sm.jpg

doesnt have to have the CZ in the spacer, or the gold pins... but, the wood, the shape, the finish, everything else... thats my goal... :)

I almost jumped on the chance to get $60 for a $120 set of scales. It's hard, but I'll have to defer to that "I'm squashed for time" statement I made earlier. Sorry.

My prices stay consistant out of respect for past customers who have paid the price for my work. To make deals or to start giving discounts for whatever reason is not fair to all of those past customers. One exception... Show me the cut orders for a Purple Heart off your DD-214 and we'll talk.

Other than that, there is always Santa... :D

Or... buy lots of raffle tickets when I give The Den one of my customs.

well as it sits, those were just a reference... its a handle for christ sake lol im not payin more for the handle than i did the blade, and the blade does all the work... i can live without it, believe that... i just figured it wouldnt/shouldnt be too hard to make a dark wood set of slivers in the shape and thickness of that which i referenced... the wood sample im assuming is the most expensive portion... right? anyways... no biggie... like i said, was an "extra"... didnt know how much those cost, didnt really want the exact same thing, just something similar, figured you knew a way to do it.. or a person who would... thanks though...

I'm only trying to say... politely... that I am too busy to do anything extra right now. Not intending to add fuel to your fire, I also do not do other people's designs... ever.

I thought I gave you all the answers you needed, to find someone who could do it for you. I can see by the iddy biddy darts lobbed in my direction that I may have irritated you and that you think what I do is very simple and I only deal with slivers of wood to make handles (scales). It wasn't my intent to insult you by turning you down. Sorry.

And just so you know... the wood isn't as expensive as the hours and hours it takes to do the work.... or factor in the equipment costs... or electricity... or sandpaper... CA... hand tools and their maintenance... or the years it takes to get good at it.....................................

In other words, they are a work of art and not some cheap knockoff soon to be recalled product from China. :D

Sledge

no offense taken, and no offense intended with my previous posts ::

i just thought the wood itself would be the more expensive piece because of the difference in price suggested between wood types... the same scales made of 2 different materials can have an easy $100 gap between them, figured this was a primary concern with making them...

i understand if you are busy, i honestly thought those were your design though (O_O) if i remember correctly, it was you who i got the URL for that picture from in the "shave porn" thread lol

but, with all that said, scales to me (and im sure many other people) are optional, they dont need to be there as long as something usable IS there.. maybe in the future, if i honestly give 2 sh*ts about my razors and spending $120 on a new set of scales for one of them, ill either seek you out, or whoever made those scales... and put them beauties on it :) i think the biggest thing that drives my desire for THOSE scales, is the design... i like the color, the fact that the wood grain is a deep color, almost undetectable without lots of light, and a good eye... the high polish, and the design... almost squared, with very thick slivers of wood on each side... just looks very sturdy.. and thats what i think a lot of scale sets lack... sturdyness... especially plastic ones.

Cool beans, Sledge... I can irritate people sometimes. It's not intended. If you got to be around me in person, you would see what I mean. Heck, 95% of the inmates down at the jail liked me... what better endorsement could you ask for than that?

Sorry I confused you. Those are my scales with my design. Rene has the razor. I may have misunderstood you. I thought you were wanting one of your own designs. And those PH scales would be cheaper without the CA finish. One of these days, I may catch up so I can make a bunch.

whats CA? and what would it look like without it? (O_O) i like that razor for everything it is... i mean i dont need the little stone in the spacer, a nice plain stainless steel, chrome, or other silver steel would do just fine... i just like the density of the wood (or at least, how it looks dense lol cant truly determine by a pic) and how it looks... so slick and shiny... its truly a piece of art... not sure how a lower end (nothing over $100) razor would do in it... the one thing im lookin at, is that the razor in the pic has a rounded point... mine has a spike point... wonder how that will change the look of the entire design?

hi guys, well i read this post end to end and boy it makes some reading....Bill your blog is excellent and I always wondered why I saw Gabriels bit at the bottom with your name in it.......in his auctions.

Sledge, Bills recommendations for scale makers is right on, having had a few conversations with Joe.C and Garythepenman, and owning work from them both he has sent you in a good direction,Bg42 and Vladsch do awesome work also, examples you will find on here Im sure, so take bills advice and get intouch with them. Their work will do you proud.

I own a couple of Bills restored razors (my first ever razor and a lovely tartan scaled one) and a couple of Joes and had a set of scales made for me and mounted by garythepenman,so i do know what they do.

I took the bull by the horns and make my own but those are for me cos i like doing it....and CA, correct me if im wrong is Cryano-accrolate...i know i mis-spelled it,basically...SUPERGLUE. You need a sealed finish of some sort but there are alternatives.

I hope I have helped you in someway, and hope i dont get my a** kicked for going off subject..

regards,simon

Simon has the definition down. I must clarify, though, that my scales average 8 to 12 separately applied coats of superglue. Of which, each coat may need light to moderate sanding with a 400 grit paper.

What, you Bill being a smart one....never...Sledge Bill, like all seriously cool and experienced scale makers make it sound so easy and I guess for them it is, and I also own Bills CD, which I may say is great for learning from, I dont yet own his updated one...(sorry Bill), it is worth it....

As I was saying these guys have it down, I applied my first CA by brush that came from the bottle of superglue,it works however later I heard that speading it on by hand is better, using a finger cot....and as Bill says a light to moderate sand...lol...for me its a little more than that, i keep trying...

I havent used CA with my last set, I used gun stock oil, which is like varnish, it gave me a more matt than gloss finish but I like it, thats the alternative I spoke about yesterday...like everything else in the world, its your choice...all the guys that were mentioned by Bill and myself, we have their work to aspire to and that includes ole' Urleebird...lol...i do it for a few reasons,

1.I enjoy it
2.Im cheap ( tight really)
3.Its a hobby / pasttime that I dont have to be fighting fit for
4. I can do it at home while the wifes at work and the wee fellas in bed.

Who knows you may enjoy it.
