Purple Heart Scales on a Shapleigh

I just finished this one up for a member here. It came out pretty good, I think. The scales are purple heart with about 10 coats of CA. I also put one of my signature diamond gemstones in the spacer.

I toyed with this one a bit to see if I could give the wood some more depth with the CA. Don't tell anyone cause it's a secret, but I got this look with a mini torch. Purple heart wood is very receptive to heat changes. Eventually, the scales may all be one color, but it may take a while because it is sealed by the CA. (Super Glue)

Damn, Bill! The heat definately made that wood a lot sexier. Like the color and depth a lot more. I'd call it a "midnight purple" now. Brass pins and shape just accent its classiness.

well another awesome razor...the thing that i like the best is the liquid-like finish, that always gets me...very tidy Bill...now I know I have to do something with the little purple heart I have now...but alas, wont be this week, my mothers coming over....lol...time to square away my quarters...lol

Absolutely beautiful. I am thoroughly intrigued by straight razors. Beautiful pieces of art that serve a useful purpose! Alas, I lack the testicular fortitude needed to attempt such a shave. And honing has never been a strong suit, although it has been years since I've tried. However for the purpose of collecting...I feel my wallet beginning to hemorrhage at the very thought!

Does honing and shaving with a straight have a steep learning curve?

Jim, shaving with a straight requires more patience, but neither shaving nor honing has a really steep "learning curve." Best to start out slow with a razor from Bill (http://www.billysblades.com) or another honemeister, so it's already sharp, and that way the only initial outlay is for the razor and a strop (Tony Miller at http://www.thewellshavedgentleman.com has a starter strop that won't cost too much.) Also check out Dr. Chris Moss's (http://homepage.mac.com/drmoss/FileSharing26.html) guide to straight shaving.

Honing isn't really tough, either. It takes practice and, again, some patience.

Speechless. I've never worked with purple heart before because I always thought it was too light and not figured enough. Apparently it might behoove me to revisit it with a torch and some CA.
