View Full Version : So whatcha put in your hair?

Having never liked those modern styling-gels and sprays and whatnot else (mostly due to the cheap department-store scents) all I used to style my hair for a very long time has been plain water and a comb :D
A few months ago I discovered an old German product called "Brisk" It's a very light combing-cream, non-shiny, non-sticky, perfect for just keeping the hair in shape.
Last week I got a tub of Yardleys Lavender Brilliantine and I also love it. It has a very pleasant lavender smell and it works very well on my (now) very short hair. It gives a nice shine and a great hold.
Today I ordered two more products, both from American Crew - their Pomade and their Grooming Cream. I'm looking forward to trying both products.
So, guys and gals, what do you put in your hair to look like a civilised person :p :D

Fructis Leave-In Conditioning Cream.
I'm very picky about my hair styling products, and this stuff rocks! It always does what I want it to do. I'm on my third bottle of the stuff, and I can't remember ever buying the same hair styling product this many times.
dab 'O Brylcreem for drying my hair.
dab 'O Groom and Clean for styling.
I'll sometimes use a bit of hair spray when my locks get a bit long

me, about the only thing I use is a little Monsieur de Paris hair spray, which is an old barbershop brand still around. It has a nice scent, and keeps the hair in place pretty good.

Right out of the shower, I use Pinaud Eau de Quinine Tonic while my hair is still wet. This stuff is great for conditioning the scalp.
I finish stying my hair with a dab of Pinaud Styling Gel.

Conditioner sometimes in the shower.
Eau de Portugal sometimes after just stepping out of the shower with my hair towelled but still damp. Conditions the scalp much like the Eau De Quinine, I imagine, and has a mild hold effect on my hair if I slather enough in. Has a nice old barbershop aroma I like very much.

I used to use Brylcreem (mostly when my hair was short for a week or two after a haircut), but for the last several months I've been alternating between Pinaud's Greaseless Hair Tonic and their Eau de Quinine. The tonic adds body when my hair is short, and the Quinine helps to keep it down when it gets too long. Both have a great scent.

Lately, I've been using the Booster Lanolin Hair Cream, which is basically a PH-balanced mineral oil based cream with added lanolin and a few other moisturizers.
I believe Gabel's in the US has a similar product, though I've not tried it. Wildroot looks to be somewhat similar as well.
I like the Hair Cream because it merely calms my hair down and takes care of any "flyaways" and leaves it looking clean, groomed, and healthy. Doesn't look full of product or styled. Just clean. :D

I have been using Pashana Hair Lotion right out of the shower after towel drying my hair. Afterwards, if my hair is short, then I use a little Dove hair spray. If it's a little longer, then I put a dab of Kiehl's styling gel on wet hands and put it through my hair, then use a little Dove hair spray.

Otherwise I have good experiences with two PASHANA products:

I use Clubman Greaseless Hair Tonic when my hair is short (it seems to have some sort of thickening agent). When my hair gets longer, I switch to the Eau de Quinine. Lately, I've found myself rubbing either Brylcreem or Wildroot into my hair, and then thinning it out with the Quinine -- makes for a nice balance.

I was a little reserved about using the Pinaud tonic because of the alcohol. My problem is that I tend to have oily skin and prone to getting flake issues even though I keep my hair short. After trying the Eau de Quinine tonic, I love the stuff. Makes my scalp feel great and I haven't had any problems with dandruff since. The scent is one you have to really sample for yourself, it's unique enough (to me at least) that I can't think of anything comparable you might be familiar with. Unfortunately I can't get it locally however, last time I was visiting my mom there's a drug store there that had tons of Pinaud stuff. Next I go back I'll be loading up!

My hair is thick, with a little gray mixed in, so I guess you might say, hard to control. I've been using the American Crew Fiber, as has very little shine, and provides a lot of hold. I use a very small amount, maybe a snoodle smaller than a pea, rub into my hair after the shower when wet. Then brush and thats it. Works very well, if you are looking for something with very little shine.

Due to a sad genetic inheritance of multiple-multiple Cowlicks, I kinda just
gave up on my hair after the Vanity of my HighSchool years had passed.
Accepted that nothing could be done. I just wash/condition, then towel dry.
However it drys out is how I wear it. LOL, neither comb nor hairbrush has
touched my hair for about 40 years.
My youngest son, happily, inherited his hair from his lovely maternal side.
He used stuff like "American Crew" (whatever that is). Then one of my Nancy
Boy orders included a free reward bottle of "Styling Gel" (whatever that is).
I passed the NB good-customer reward onto the American Crewster Cruiser.
He got a kick out of the name & swears by the quality of the product. Evidently, it drys or sets or what the heck ever it does way superior to competing products.
So, if you are a GEL-ler you might wanna try out the NANCY BOY Styling Gel.
BTW - use the NANCY BOY Shampoo & NANCY BOY Conditioner on my own
untameable locks. Great products. Will re-order time & time again.

I just bought 6 of 'em on eBay before making note of the start date on the cap. With daily usage, each puck lasts me 6 just about 6 months! +1 I use this now that I'm growing my hair out to about 1" long instead of the regular 1/4" length. Provides great control, doesn't dry out & flake like most gels, and if you use more than a pea but less than an almond you'll get some shine out of it.
Only complaint, it's a little hard to wash out. Usually wash my hair twice, then condition.
btw, C&E shampoo w/jojoba is pretty d*&n good stuff. Been using it about a week and it's noticeably improved my hair.

Once in awhile, conditioner, otherwise nothing. I'm mostly bald, but there is enough on top to comb when I let it get that long (which isn't often). I have to concur with Mike, the Pinaud Styling Gel rocks. I never used to like wearing any kind of styling gel but this one is holds very well and doesnt hurt my hair like other stuff.
+ another, I really like this stuff, no itchy head either which has been a problem with others.

I have very thick curly/waivy hair. So I use either Goldwells curl definition treatment conditioner or Pantene curl defining mousse. But I'm sure this probably isn't of use to most folks.

I use newt's eye shampoo with a little iguana oil. Then I rinse with salamander fat mixed with kangaroo sweat. great stuff and all natural. Funny thing is there are always a bunch of flies around me when I go outside. I can't imagine why???
Sorry I needed a laugh...

Rendered chipmonk fat is even better! (I wont mention the joys of using products made from endangered species......)

I stopped using any styling product about 3 years ago, I shampoo, do my hair with my fingers. I like my hair short, it is easy. ;)

Neither have I. A mixture of a product used to soften and moisturize cows' udders with some antiseptic properties and something you threaten kids with if they misbehave. I think there are some unresolved issues here. :D

well, i usually only use the combo right after i get a haircut (a bald, BALD fade). after that, i pretty much only use the bag balm. i figure it has the petroleum to keep my hair in place and the lanolin to soften it. it works suprisingly well.

Bag Balm is a household staple around here. I think I have 4 tins of it. Used mostly for wound care on the horses or wound and minor burn care on people. It was the only stuff that saved me from losing a third layer of skin on a very nasty sunburn on my legs that landed me in bed for two days. Nice to see an innovative use for it.
