I'll be picking up some stones to get back into sharpening my own stuff and learning how to hone my own straights. I have a couple Norton oil stones already. I have tools and knives and all kinds of sharp objects lying around just begging to be sharpened. So, I'm thinking of getting the following new or look for them used. Is it OK?
Norton Water Stone Kit ($120) which includes:
Norton 220/1000 Combination Water Stone
Norton 4000/8000 Combination Water Stone
Norton Flattening Stone
Sharpening DVD
Case and Stone baseNorton Prep Stone ($14.00)
Shapton 12K Pro Ceramic Water Stone ($99.00)

I think the kit for $120 is a excellent deal.
The Shapton's are very pricey but a lot of people like them. I have a 12k chinese stone($30) that gives me excellent results.

$120 is about the best price you're going to find. That's ultimately the set I'll wind up buying for myself.
In the meantime, I'll just keep sneaking in to Raf's place and using his stones :rofl

I still need to pick up my Norton Hone Kit , like quick, and I saw the Spiderco thread. Anyone use the Shapton Pro Ceramics?

Nice kit, never tried the shaptons yet... I lean toward natural stones more...although the spyderco does sound interesting as many have reported a Very finely polished edge from them...
Pasted strops work well too Rich..something else to consider for finishing :)

You're talking to someone who needs help 3 hands to hammer a nail. One to hold the nail, one to use the hammer and one to hold the first aid kit. :D

I don't think you'll need the prep stone - I'm assuming that's for creating a slurry. Generally a slurry is not used with the Norton water stones. That looks like a complete set up ya got going there.
