You can post your non-shave related acquisitions here if you want or in "The Haul" threads. Just make sure if you post there to identify the post as a non-shave related item.
For those of us that have seen the light of the shaving gods, we tend to be collectors of other "things." These are my acquisition addictions. I'll be posting purchases of these items here.
Revised: 10/05/07
Horses - Next to my family, this is #1. I'm down to 2 for me, youngster and retiree, and 1 for my wife.
DE Shaving - You just have to look at my locl to know how much trouble I'm in.
Cookware - Almost as bad as DE Shaving (Calphalon) - Quiet for a while
Cutlery - A little less than Cookware (Henkels) - Quiet for a while
Christmas Outdoor Decorations - Joint effort by one and all. Christmas is coming soon.
Sci-Fi/Fantasy Books - Rising. 1-2 books a week.
Horror and Sci-Fi/Fantasy DVDs - My Amazon wish list is full of them.
PS2 Games - Depends on how much my daughter wants it too. Quiet right now.
Coffee - Goes back and forth (AeroPress, French Press, Cuisinart DCC-1200, Kyusu Teapot)
Porto - Donations Accepted
Pipes & Cigars - Do I really want to start this back up again? Maybe later.
Firearms - My sordid past. In safekeeping until my daughter gets older.

OK, I'm going to get this out of the way early. For those of us that have seen the light of the shaving gods, we tend to be collectors of other "things." These are my acquisition addictions.
Horses - Next to my family, this is #1. Trying to cut back. I have to very very reluctantly find a good home for one.
DE Shaving - God I'm in trouble.
Cookware - Almost as bad as DE Shaving (Calphalon)
Cutlery - A little less than Cookware (Henkels)
Christmas Outdoor Decorations - Joint effort by one and all.
Sci-Fi/Fantasy Books - Rising
Horror and Sci-Fi/Fantasy DVDs - in my wish list
PS2 Games - Depends on how much my daughter wants it too.
Coffee - Goes back and forth (AeroPress)
Porto - In remission
Pipes & Cigars - In remission until I retire
Firearms - Long in remission. Out of the picture.
All stuff shaving
Sci-Fi
Coffee
Firearms
Fountain Pens
Mechanical Watches
Help......I just move from one to the other
If I had the money, I would spend a lot on cameras and lenses and coffee machines. I read a lot and occasionally play video games.

Wait, wait...you're from Gilroy and you collect nothing to do with GARLIC?! No garlic presses, no garlic shaving cream? Nothing?! Whazzup with that?!
I guess you could say I collect cookware. When I was divorced, I'd never cooked much other than stuff on the grill and an occasional round of fried chicken. I actually called my ex at one point and asked her how to make white sauce! (yes, she told me) Decided I wanted to get some good stuff and learn how to use it.
So...research said All-Clad was good, so I bought a few (ok, 7) pieces. Nice! Then, I saw an ad in a local flyer for 11 pieces of LeCrueset - for $50!!! How could I pass on that?!
I'd always liked copper stuff, but what's-her-name thought it was too much trouble (which, as it turns out, is not really true). Now, I have 10 pieces of industrial strength Mauviel, some with stainless lining, some tinned. 2.5mm thick with cast iron handles. NicER!! My favorite.
I also have several pieces of antique cast iron. Folks this stuff is awesome! Ever make popovers in a cast iron popover pan?
But only 3 brushes (if the B&B would ever get here!) Hey, maybe Barkeeper's friend would get rid of the smell! :D

I'm sorry to say that I have found a home for one of my horses. :( It pains me to do this but I have to think about what is best for the horse. Bonnie, my 6 yr old black mare is going to Texas as a broodmare. She will make a very good Mama and will be able to hang out in pasture all day and be inside at night.
The woman who is taking her took our older dog when we had to find him a new home because little kids scared the heck out of him for some reason when nothing else would. He is now a very happy dog, fatter dog. I know this woman will take the best care of Bonnie.
On the other hand, my wife has a horse on loaner at the same time she is trying to sell her western pleasure mare. A woman in Hawaii is interested in her but I have not heard any updates in a couple of days.

Books.
If I had more money, I could see watches being a possibility. And pens. But for now, I can only feed my shaving ADs and my book ADs. And I don't buy a book unless it's for reading.
Pipes
Cigars
Shavery.....
not neccessarily in that order.
PalmettoB
03-05-2007, 12:01 AM
I never really considered that I had any ADs before this wetshaving thing. Maybe tools. There always seemed to be another sander, saw or some little shop goodies I need.
But I got into pipes and cigars about fifteen years ago. Cigars can get expensive!
And then this wetshaving thing, which is weird, though. I never even cared about what bath soaps I used before. Just whatever was there. Same with shaving. The cheaper the better. Disposable razors, 10 pack for 6 bucks? Okay. Barbasol shave foam? Whatever...
Now, I can add shaving ADs to the others. ;)

Already familiar with that site. :D Got a question for you Bill. Of the commercial sharpeners, like Spiderco or Lansky systems, who do you like? I have a set of generic stones I use on occasion but was wondering if these systems are any good.

I don't have a Spiderco, but I do have a Lansky. It is a terrific system. Be sure to get at least one of the diamond hones, though. Medium grit, if you can only get one. Medium and fine, if you can get two.
They work really well for those who have a tough time being consistent when they are sharpening a knife. The Lansky takes the variables out of the equation.
Once you have used it a lot, you will have better success sharpening knives without the use of the aid.

Have that one too (both the disorder AND the book) and it's killing me. I collect Dune books, Terry Goodkind, Terry Pratchett, Orson Scott Card, Chris Heimerdinger, Douglas Adams and David and Leigh Eddings.
And I also collect music books by bands that I like.

Have/had a lot of books from those authors. I had at one time @3000 sci-fi/fanatasy books but I had no place to put them anymore so I donated about 3/4 of them to the library figuring some young kid would get excited about reading like I did when I was 15. I kept the collector books and certain authors. I have the entire Edgar Rice Burroughs Tarzan Series and almost every book Philip Jose Farmer has ever written who is the author that got me started.

I am on a 3 a week book habit. (I have a great little store that sells interesting used books) but I don't know what is going to happen when I have to ship them all back home!
What makes this extra difficult is that I carry a full load at college. I just am so interested in so many topics. Books are the best. I am working on my Native/Aboriginal people collection the hardest lately. Mostly it is for my mother, who was an American Indian in her past life. I get her books, posters and lithographs and pictures of Geronimo for her Birthday, xmas, etc. She has a great collection of Native art that I am also into as well. My favorite is art from the Pacific Northwest, and I have a rather large tattoo on my leg that proves it! Beautiful people, and beautiful art.

OK, I am going to make my final round purchase of new creams to try for a while. This is what I'm thinking of getting. Please feel free to comment on likes or dislikes and if you have a favorite place to get them.
Cremo Cream Shave Cream
Tabac Original Shaving Cream
Taylor of Old Bond Street Avocado Shave Cream
Truefitt & Hill Ultimate Comfort Shave Cream
The Cremo is an experiment and the Truefitt is a need to try to see if I'm missing something. The other two are very high on a lot of people lists and I thought I'd give them a whirl. I'm at the point where I can almost have something different for each day of the month. How sad is that? AD overdrive. It is a very fun experience trying new things and I am definitely finding my zones for lather building and shaving techniques. I am having the most trouble with scents. There are very few that don't thrill me so far. There are some I keep going back to over and over again and I will make product scent themes out of them at some point but I don't see that happening for a while. I'm having too much fun. I really need to put some wire shelves in that spare locker of mine. :D

Burt's Bees Soap Bark & Chamomile Deep Cleansing Cream.
This one looks like it might leave a little less residue than the Burt's Bees Peach & Willowbark Deep Pore Scrub and Orange Oil Facial Wash I have. I like them too but I have to remember to use only a little before a shave. They might be a better choice for a night time face cleaning.

You know walking sticks is something that i have always wanted to collect, unfortunaly i have looked and the only ones that i can find are either too novel or too utilitarian, biggest turn off is when i find a nice one but it had a rubber tip, i like the classic silver/metal or glass handle and metal tip. Very hard to find at least in good condition on the net. Where have you found luck?

Nice horse. Sorry to hear you lost your horses in the split. Team penning is a blast. My wife used to do it once in a while. I've never had the pleasure. The mare I gave away to Texas would have been a great penning horse. I used to show my ex's mare in working cow horse occasionally.
It's nice to see that there are others with a worse case of AD than mine:
Currently active:
Microscope objective cannisters
Metal lion figurines, especialy paperweights.
Fine writing instruments
Razors and shave creams
Vintage staplers (office variety)
In remission:
Paperweights (glass)
Roseville pottery
I suspect I've missed one or two. Sigh...

OK, the TV has been up and running in the family area. I guess that's what you call the little space next to the kitchen area. Previously, I had a standard cable box, a dvd player, a vhs recorder/player and a Tivo Series 2 Dual Tuner hooked up to the old TV. First thing I noticed is that standard cable on the HDTV sucked. The DVDs looked really good because the HDTV has built in signal upconverting circuitry from the DVD player. VHS playback is always going to suffer somewhat.
So, I called Charter Cable and had them come out to install an HD cable box and run a new outlet into a front room. Bad news was they'd have to run the line on the outside of the front of the house. There's a chance an electrician can run a line up in the ceiling since we have ceiling vents instead. So no go on the second line for now. The good news was they ran out of regular HD cable boxes and they gave me one with a built in DVR for N/C. All right! Except one problem. I have a Tivo DVR box already. The installer re-wired all my equipment and now I have boxes with wires hanging off them or routed in a way I'm not happy with. I have a "project." :D Shouldn't be bad. I took a look at what I have and how it's wired and figured out what I'm going to do. I also want to take advantage of the highest quality signals the equipment can handle. I have HDMI connects but no wires. That's not cheap but doable.
This is what I'm going to do since the HDTV has a ton of input connections.
1) Get an HDMI cable for connecting the HD Cable Box to the HDTV
2) Use the built in HD cable box DVR to record HD channels or any channels > channel 99.
3) Split the cable signal and run a co-axial connection to the Tivo Box. I'll use the Tivo DVR to record channels 1-99. In other words, daughter can record all the cartoons and Hannah Montana, Sweet Life of Zack & Cody and other kids shows she wants on the Tivo without interfering with the "good stuff" that will be recorded on the cable box dvr. Once the old tv is hooked to a new cable connection then the Tivo box will be moved.
4) The VHS recorder/player will have a RCA Audio/Video connection direct to the TV or maybe a co-axial connection. I'm not sure yet. I never use it for recording anymore so no problem being stand alone.
5) The DVD player is being moved to where the old TV is. Daughter can watch DVDs there. Eventually, the Tivo box and the PS2 will join it. A mini entertainment center so to speak. The HDTV will be strictly viewing pleasure.
6) I bought a Sony upconverting DVD player with HDMI interface. A real bargain. Retailers are getting desperate. The HDMI cable to connect it to the HDTV costs almost as much as I paid for the DVD player. Eventually it will be upgraded to a Blu Ray DVD player. Part of the reason I say Blu Ray is because I eventually want a PS3 and it has a built in Blu Ray player. I'm sneaky that way.
OK, thanks for letting me get my thoughts down on paper. I think I have my plan of attack.

All done with the equipment switches and new cabling. All I can say is wow, what a difference. Every channel is crystal clear and the upconverting circuitry on the new Sony DVD player is great when coupled with HDMI connectors. I was watching Some HD movies on cable with the new cabling and the movies just jumped out from the screen. Audio improved tremendously too. OK. All done for now. Time to save up more rewards points for a Blu Ray player. :D
