View Full Version : Your Favorite Cartridge Razor?

What's your favorite cartridge razor? And, maybe you don't even have a favorite cartridge razor...that's OK too.
I know some of us still use a cartridge razor on occasion. They're not all bad, IMHO. I still like my Sensor! I use only Sensor cartridges, since the Sensor Excel and the Sensor 3 seem to produce irritation. I don't use it everyday as you can see from my post about our favorite razors in the Safety Razor section. I use it about 10% of the time.
I primarily use it to shave the hard to reach little area under my nose, and sometimes if I'm in a really big hurry I'll grab the Sensor for a quickie. It really reminds me of the luxury and comfort of the DE.
I even have a Trumper handle for the Sensor and a Gillette Special Platinum Edition handle. I currently use the Trumper handle; it is Faux Ivory...makes a nice classic look.
I have never been able to use any cartridge razor beyond the Sensor with any measure of success. I have a Mach 3 handle somewhere, but I just can't adjust to its angle, nor the amount irritation it can produce in a short time. FWIW, YMMV!
I'm by no means promoting the cartridge razor over the DE, but just thought some comments would be interesting.

sometimes these are a needed convenience when traveling.
Before switching to the AC, I was using a Wilkinson XtremeIII.
I had tested Gillette Sensor Excel, Gillette Mach 3, Wilkinson Protector 3D Diamond and Wilkinson FX Diamond.
When travelling, I use the Feather AC and a brushless cream.

Thats not a bad Idea ! to use the Feather AC for that beats bringing your paddle strop.
How many shaves do you get out of one blade for the Feather AC ?

In a previous existance....the Wilkinson Sword Diamond. I really liked it until someone tried to convince me that 4 blades were better. If I went back to cartridges...the Diamond would probably be the one,.

I bought a Wilkinson cartridge on one of my trips to London. I had banked on Boots selling DE blades, but I couldn't find any in the one outside customs at Heathrow. Anyway, the Wilkinson actually did a nice job.

Eh, me neither (July for me). But if some low snake came in and stole all my DEs, I guess I could go hunt up the old Sensor handle I have and find a cartridge somewhere for it.

I haven't shaved with a cartridge in a long time, but based on what I have used I'd have to say the Sensor worked pretty well. Not sure why I ever switched to Mach III before finally making the DE plunge?

I guess I would use my Quattro since I'm used to it.

Only ones I've used are the Quattro, the Mach3, M3 turbo and M3 power. Mach 3 power was the best one out of that but nothing compared to my straights and the cartidges cost a freakin fortune. Still cheap compared to the Fusion ones that only just came out here though. If I wouldn't be using a straight I'd be switching to a fusion right now simply because I was always looking for something better.

I do like the edges of my goatee to be well defined, and I haven't had consistent success with my HD due to the shorter strokes required. With this in mind, I get the Sensor out for a good trim about once every two weeks utilizing one long downward pass on each side. It's also easier for me to see when trimming underneath the goatee.
I use a Mach 3 Turbo for my headshave, as I'm not sure I could fully control the different angles blindly with a DE. :ashamed001

The only cartridge that has ever given me a good shave is the Fusion. I know that knocking it has become a cottage industry on these forums, but I get a very smooth, clean shave with one. For the life of me, I can't understand how I can complain about the expense of the replacement blades, then go and spend a fortune on all this other crap. :rofl

Wetshaving is just that, wetshaving. To me wetshaving means removing ones whiskers, by using some type of blade, while they are wet, i.e. applying a base, layer or coating of lather produced from soap and water or cream and water.
The choice of the blade or razor is just as personal a choice as the soap or cream. Matter of fact, IMHO, it's still wetshaving even if you choose to use a 'brushless' cream. It boils down to 'what works for you'.
If a cartridge razor, or even a disposable, works well for someone and they like using it, then that is great. If a DE razor works well for someone and they like using it, then that is great. Just the same as some of us are 'soap' oriented, and some of us are 'cream' oriented.
I, for one, appreciate hearing unbiased feedback about any blade razor, including cartridges and disposables. Thanks for your candid remarks about your favorite razor.

Not exactly cartridge specific but I've been experimenting with disposables quite a bit lately. I used bic metals all through January and most of February. Not bad at all. The regular and sensitive skin bics were OK but not as good as the metals.
This moring I used a Gillette disposable. I'm not sure what it was called but it was very similar to the Sensor. Two blades, pivoting head, lube strip. I was pretty impressed. I'd love to find a pivoting head disposable with only one blade. I'm not sure one exists but whatever this little guy was that I used this morning I am very hopeful hopeful. Not nearly as much burn from my alcohol-based spash and the shave seemed a littel closer. I figure I can use one of these twice before the leading edge dulls and results in ingrown hairs. We'll see.

I still find that my old Mach 3 will do in a pinch, when I'm in a real hurry. The M3 was definitely an improvement over the Atra that I used for a long time, but there are many cartridge razors I never tried that are probably better.

....the Wilkinson Sword Diamond.
In the USA, it goes by the name Tracer, Tracer FX, or FX Diamond. And it's probably my favorite cartridge razor. I like that the cartridges are very thin. And rather than having pivoting blades, the whole cartridge flexes around the skin.
It's gotten very hard to find now in the US, what with the shelf space now taken up by the Quattro and Fusion.

I use the Schick Extreme 3 for my head on a regular basis. two passes-ATG first, then WTG and some blade buffing leaves a smooth, kissable dome.
Using a DE on my head is out of the question-no flex, plus my head is much too round for success with one.

I used the sensor and the Mach III both not bad, but haven't touched them in almost 2 years. The main reason for switching to a D/E was the cost and now i only use a straight mostly because i like the up keep! it gives me something to do.

Ever since I discovered the Parker 22R and the Dovo Bismarck, it's against my policy to even THINK of using a cartridge razor. I must say however, I was getting good shaves when I used a Sensor Excel. The Quattro was lousy, at least for me, the M3 Turbo wasn't too much better, and I never did try the Fusion. I did a short stint with the regular Mach 3, which I hated.

I LOVE my Gillette Sensor (not Excel), and it's my goto one when I'm not using a DE. I've fallen in like (not quite love yet) with the Sensor3, I'll have to admit. Used to love the Mach3 (not Turbo) for a period of time. Schick Quattro and Quattro Power -- eh, take it or leave it, but wouldn't dish out the loonies to buy more blades.
Cheers,

I had me a Sensor Excel shave this morning. I was in a hurry, but needed a shave, so I dabbed my brush in some J.M. Frasers and lathered directly on my face. Had a single pass shave with the Excel. Not bad, not bad at all.
Now, I do prefer my DE anyday, but I like to have the time to enjoy it and do three to four passes with nice warm lather. But the Excel fills a niche....IMHO! YMMV! ;)

I've had a couple of injectors and I like the way they feel but never been able to get a really good shave with them. Maybe I need to 'practice' a little more with them and give it some time. I love the feel 'in the hand' of the injector.
I do occasionally use a BIC Metal, which I would classify as a disposable version of the injector.

Same here. Tried all the cartridges (except the 'powered' ones) and always came back to the Trac II.
BUT if we can include disposables here, then I will shout the praises of the BIC Metal from the mountain tops. It is one of the best shavers of any type and I am tickled that they're available again (only via the web, but still).

Got a Fusion and Mach 3 in the mail for free. Tried them both the Mach 3 did better then the Fusion ever could hope to do. Went out and got a Sensor Excell before making the switch to double edge, the excell did better than any of the others. Double edge beat the sensor by a mile. I find that there is an inverse relationship between the price of the blade and the quality of the shave.

Why is that your favorite cartridge razor?
For me the Fusion made me a bloody mess, the Mach 3 only made me a half mess while the Sensor did pretty darn well. Not as good as my Super Speeds though. No difference within the groups of cartridge razors, the Mach 3 Turbo was equal to the Mach 3.

Tried them all at one stage and the Mach 3 is the best by a fair margin IMHO.I still use mine once a week for old times sake and it shaves as good as a DE.There is a lot of nonsense written on all wet shaving forums about irritation and bad shaves with Mach 3s.I think Gillette got it right as far as a great shaver goes and ruined it when they released their latest cash cow the Fusion.;)

I've been using the Sensor 3 for the longest time. I just ordered my first DE, though so hopefully that will turn into my everyday razor. I'll hang onto my Sensor 3 of course since I have a full pack of blades for it that cost me $15.

The best razor i have come across is hands down the rolling razor. . it literally rolls across your skin causing less irritation, and no red bumps, or ingrowns. The only catch with this one is you really have to re-learn how to shave.... Forget all you know of shaving with the stick razors, and learn how to really maneuver with the rolling razor. i am convinced this new razor will completely change the way the world shaves. you guys should really try it out. :happy102

I learned to shave using a Sensor, and have stuck with it. Went to sensor excel. Now, I'm using a sensor excel handle, with sensor blades.
Going to DE shortly (as soon as everything arrives). I tried the Mach3, but it didn't do as well as the ol' sensor, so I've stuck with that.

First of all, Welcome to The Shave Den! Hope you enjoy it here and can benefit from all of the shaving info and knowledge to be found here.
As for the Rolling Razor, most of us shave with a double edge or a straight razor. Some do use a Mach 3 or similar from time to time, myself included. As far as I know though, the consensus seems to be that the Rolling Razor is a gimmick. That's certainly my opinion in any case. I'm not aware of any member who has purchased one. Personally, if I were going to buy a cartridge razor, it would be one of the tried and true models from Gillette or Schick.
I noticed in another post, that you mentioned razor bumps. I have never had a problem with those and have used a cartridge razor most of my adult life. However, I understand that, for those who do have that problem, the double edge (DE) razor is very helpful.
Let us know what you decide - and how you make out with whatever it is.

I've officially converted to the Mach 3. I dropped the DE after about a month - just couldn't get any enjoyment or comfort out of it, whatsoever. Initially, I went back to my Sensor 3 but I'm finding that the Sensor 3 blades are kinda tough to find compared to the other cartridge razors. Mach 3 blades can be found everywhere. The Mach 3 has been out now for quite a few years but I've stayed away from it because I thought the overall design of it was strange (the cartridge sitting flat - unlike the Sensor design). I had my first shave today with the Mach 3 and low and behold I found the performance to be even better than the Sensor! I'm pleasantly surprised. Yes, the blades are ridiculously expensive but I can't deny the quality of shaves I continue to get with the cartridge razor system. It just simply works for me. The $$ savings that I get from using a DE just isn't worth the displeasure that comes with using it. Again, this is just me. For you guys that enjoy the DE, GREAT! I just can't get into it.

I'm planning on adding one of those nice heavy Atra handles to my collection. It looks like it would make a great shaver, and there seem to be many more handles available for the Atra than the Sensor.

I've been reading these posts on cartridge razors in hope of finding reference to inexpensive replacement cartridges. I use a Merkur HD with Derby blades. My son who is 18 is quite interested in wet shaving, but I shudder at the thought of a DE in his hand. He has a pretty heavy beard for 18. He cuts himself pretty badly now with a cartridge razor, the Fusion. I think part of the problem is that the cost of replacement blades causes him to try to get more mileage out of a cartridge and so he ends up cutting himself and/or getting razor burn and bumps pretty badly. I've been searching the net looking for some inexpensive cartridges to order for him to try. Any suggestions?

I agree with Doc in that it's time to move away from the Fusion/Mach3 multi-blade cartridge razors. Besides costing an arm and a leg, they cost you skin off your face too!
I think the DE is a logical move. Just treat it with respect. A lot of us grew up on the DE years ago and didn't have the second thought about it.
Another option is to look around and find some BIC Metals. They're the closest thing you can get to a DE in a disposable. They would be a nice way to learn DE technique but with a cheap disposable razor. I found them at Big Lots in our area. Look at some of the close-out and discount stores and you'll probably run across some. They're like $2 for a package of 10. They also make a great travel razor when you don't wanna' take a DE on the road! In addition, do a search here about the BIC Metals for more info.

i spent most of shaving time so far with a mach3. it gives me an ok shave nothin compared to my 38C though. A pack of 5 mach3 cartridges costs 11 bucks where i live and the mach3 itself costs 7 bucks. wet shaving is so much better because your razor will last you a life time so its pretty much an investment when you put your money into it, your brush should be replaced every 5 years or so or atleast thats what mantic told me, a good cream like proraso will last you a very long time and only cost around 10 bucks and will be alot better for your face, and blades are extremely cheap and they get the job done better and dont irritate your skin.

your brush should be replaced every 5 years or so or atleast thats what mantic told me,
 I don't think I've ever heard this.
With proper care and maintenance a brush should last you a great many years.

Same here, I never heard this replacement time line spoken or discussed anywhere before. If I had only one brush and used it everyday I think it might need replacement in a few years...but most of us wet shavers have several brushes in our rotation which means most brushes will last a lifetime. Mo' brushes...Mo' betta'! :D

well all depends on quality of the brush, a synthetic brush can last a life time and a cheap boar brush wont last very long. When i first got a boar brush almost all the hairs fell out within a few months.

I learned to shave with the cheap plastic disposables, and it wasn't until college that I was introduced to cartridge razors - the Gillette Sensor was new at that time, so it was my first. I advanced to Mach 3 (skipped the Sensor Excel), then to the Fusion. I have to say that, of all of those I tried, including the Schick Quattro, I really liked the Fusion. The cartridges are outrageously expensive - that is how I ended up discovering wetshaving - but I liked it the best. I never tried any of the "power" razors.

Between the Trac II, Sensor, Mach 3, and Fusion, I like the Mach 3 the best. Still, I've never been thrilled by the closeness of the shaves from any of them, so I'm going to try the DE route.

Me too, but they are too expensive for my wallet. I just got my grandfather's Gillette Super Speed and I've been DE since. I will likely uses my Remington electric or try the new Disposable Mach 3 for travel (still don't like the cost, but I don't want to lose my good razor). I might try to look around the local thrift stores and antique shops for another DE for travel.
I will go on the record and state I've been getting the best shaves ever from my DE and I've only been using that for about a week now.

What's your favorite cartridge razor?
I'm actually quite fond of the new Schick Quattro Titanium Trimmer.

I moved back to DE shavng from a Schick Xtreme 3 but my favorite razor of all time was the Wilkinson Bonded. I found the single blade cartridge to be a near perfect shave. I used mine until I could not find cartridges even at the discount and dollar stores. I found the handle recently, lying next to two abandoned Mach III handles. I searched for some acceptable (single blade) cartridge to use with it but haven't found anything as yet. If I do find one, the Wilkinson becomes my travel razor.

I use the Personna Tri-Flexxx as my main setup. Cartridges last me about 10 shaves and a pack of 4 runs a mere US$3.26 at Wal*Mart. It's not perfect but does give me excellent shaves with no discomfort. The head pivots a little too loosely for my liking, though.
For travel I use Schick Slim Twin Sensitive disposables. They seem a little pricey at about 60 cents each, but they are the only disposables I've ever had any luck with. They last me about 15 shaves each and never, ever give me any problems.
Years ago, I really liked the Schick Slim Twin cartridge system, and wish they still made 'em. The handle was nice and substantial with no sloppiness in the pivoting head, and the blades were very, very sharp. The nice handle and slim cartridges made for a very maneuverable and pleasant shaver.

The Mach 3 produced a closer shave for me than the Fusion, but caused much more irritation.
So it's the Fusion for me (actually the Power version, because it feels all tickely :happy102)
But I'm not using those anymore, it's either DE or Gillette Blue II disposables.
I prefer the simple disposables above all cartridge razors.

I liked the FX Diamond, when i used cartridges. If anyone can point me to some of them so I can stock up on a few, i would be appreciative.

Well, here's what Google Shopping has for Schick FX Diamond (http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=exd&q=Schick%20FX%20Diamond&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wf). :)

I'm using the quattro titanium. I had the Mach 3, blamed Gillette for the cost escalation in razor prices and jumped to Schick. Been happy with the quattro, but am looking for alternatives to see if there is a better way to shave.
As far as cost, those 20% coupons at Bed Bath & Beyond can be used on razors - and they never expire, despite what the expiration date says on the coupon.

My favorite cartridge razors are the ones lining the landfills. May they rest in pieces! :happy102

I've been using the M3 for years now before switching back to the DE. I will still carry the M3 on airline flights, and I use it to trim the back of my neck after I cut my hair. (Yes, I cut my own hair).

Sensor Excel, I've tried them all and the electrics. This agreed with my face more than the rest. But even then it wasn't great.
Now, it's slant or progress.
