View Full Version : First shot at scales...

In my effort to learn more about this whole restoration process, I took my first shot at rescaling my M. Jung No. 80.
These are the cheapie Dovo scales from Classic. Figured if I messed it up I was only out $10. All in all, I think I did ok. I was paranoid about cutting the pin too short and wound up cutting it a bit too long instead. End result, not bad for a first timer :rofl

Good job! It might be a small step, but you did it, and that counts. I wonder if restoring has an associated disorder? Will you now be searching out "junkers" to clean up and restore? :p :D

Mike, great job, brother! You are one step ahead of me. I'm wondering if I should rescale a recently acquired "Antelope" razor myself using the pre-made parts, or if I should send it out to one of our fine restorers.
I have a J.R. Torrey razor that was my grandfather's, and that one I am definitely having restored, so I may play with fixing up the Antelope myself. Hmmm...

scales look like a great fit for that blade. Did you get it honed up?

Thanks for the comments. It wasn't too difficult, more than anything gave me some needed confidense to tackle some tougher restoration work I want to learn how to do. The tips from Bill's CD helped a lot, I highly recommend picking up a copy from him if you plan on getting in to this stuff at all.
Haven't honed this one up yet. I don't have the stones required tools for that yet... but my buddy Raf does :D

Well, I went to Mike's and picked up my rescaling supplies and some other goodies. I order black scales for a J.A. Henckel I was saving to put new scales. Talk about a kid with a new toy, I could not wait to get home.
I clean and polished the blade and the scales and went to work. After about 20 minutes here is the result:
